MIDVALE, Utah — Just one night after its statue of St. Therese was smashed, a Catholic church in Midvale had one of its parish residences broken into Monday night.The iconic statue in front of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church was pushed off its pedestal Sunday night, which resulted in the statue's head breaking off. DENVER, Colo. – At Stoney’s Bar and Grill in Denver, the entire front of the house is trying something new for the new year: giving up alcohol. Well, at least for the first 31 days of 2020. “I probably spent a thousand bucks every two weeks on booze,” said bartender Adam Farrenkopf. In attempt to save his money and his health, Farrenkopf is participating in what’s called “Dry January” – an international health movement urging people to abstain from alcohol for the first month of the year. “Being a bartender, it’s hard to not drink,” Farrenkopf said. “It’s a testament to myself and we’ll see what happens.” Dry January started a few years ago in the U.K. and quickly spread to the U.S. And it’s catching on fast. A recent study by Nielsen found just over one-fifth of Americans took part in Dry January last year and 83% of those people said they planned on doing it again this year. But is doing this DIY detox right for you?“I think America has a love-hate relationship with alcohol,” said professor Tricia Hudson-Matthew, an addiction specialist with MSU Denver. She says giving up drinking has multiple benefits. “I would say financial, we spend a lot of money on it,” Hudson-Matthew said. “When we’re talking about health wise, we’re talking about better sleeping, better eating, better skin care.” To stay committed while going cold turkey, Hudson-Matthew says to have a plan in place like recruiting friends – or at least let them know what you’re doing. “When you take something away from an individual, you also have to replace it with something,” she said. “If there isn’t something that’s replacing it, then chances are, they are going to relapse and go right back to it.” Back at the bar, not everyone feels they need to give up drinking. “Nope. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated.The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt.After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. A major warning from scientists around the world: Do not depend on antibodies for permanent immunity from COVID-19. This comes on the heels of several studies showing that antibodies only last in our bodies for about two to three months.“That’s normal,” said Dr. Michael Teng, a professor at the University of South Florida's College of Internal Medicine and a researcher.According to Dr. Teng, our immune system creates antibodies when a virus enters our bodies. Their main purpose is to stop the virus from getting into our cells. Having few or no antibodies isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it doesn’t mean you’ll be reinfected with the virus right away.“Antibodies are supposed to go down after a while,” Dr. Teng said. “You’re not supposed to have high elevated levels of antibodies for weeks on end. It’s not normal.”Scientists were hoping the antibodies produced from COVID-19 would stick around as long as antibodies produced from other forms of coronavirus, like SARS. Now that studies have shown that they don’t, they say we should rely on treatment, and working to come up with a vaccine.There are several potential vaccines being tested right now, but don’t expect to get your hands on one any time soon.“The fastest vaccine that we ever made was the Mumps vaccine and that took four years,” said Dr. Teng. She owns a small bakery in west Phoenix and says she was shocked to face such a disturbing encounter at her own business, but says she never expected what happened next.“She was trying to light me on fire.”“It took me a while to realize that she was throwing gas at me. When I saw her struggling with the lighter, that’s when it clicked on me, what she was trying to do. She was trying to light me on fire and that's when I decided to run inside,” said Frausto.The incident happened in August, and it was all caught on her surveillance video.According to police reports, the suspect was identified as Araceli Soledad Aguilera and was arrested in August for aggravated assault, serious physical injury, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.According to MCSO, she was then released from custody.“I’ve seen her around here. She still comes around here, and she still has her fights with people here. She hasn’t stopped doing it,” said Frausto.A spokesperson for the Phoenix Police Department released the following statement:Phoenix Police Detectives assigned to the Bias Crimes Units investigated this incident and were able to determine the crime was biased motivated. The enhancement charge was submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney Office.But Carlos Galindo-Elvira with Chicanos por la Causa says changes are needed.“Should we be concerned? Absolutely. Should we be vigilant? Always. But we also need to make sure we’re promoting for our communities of color, LGBTQ and Muslim communities,” said Galindo-Elvira.According to the most recent report by the FBI, hate crimes against Hispanics or Latinos rose from 485 in 2018 to 527 last year.Based on this report, Arizona had 143 cases reported last year all over someone’s race, ethnicity or ancestry.Galindo-Elvira says the reality is that there could be more cases because usually, people in communities of color won’t report it.“We got to get better numbers. Not every jurisdiction reported hate crimes.”The FBI report says there were 111 racial or ethnic hate crimes in Phoenix last year. Of 92 participating agencies, only 17 submitted incident reports.“It’s a requirement to submit those numbers, but what we need it’s for our elected officials to mandate it.
