SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Encinitas student beat out thousands of kids across the country to be named a co-champion in a national history trivia contest. He also uses history to teach kids about COVID-19.Quade Kelley, 11, produces different videos imagining what it would be like for historical figures, like Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin, in today’s world. In his videos, the student is telling others “about COVID and what we could do to have the cases go down."In one of his videos, he received the surprise of a lifetime when he found out he was a finalist in the Inaugural “Who Was?” History Bee. Kelley beat out 25,000 kids across the U.S.The student has read nearly 190 books about public and historical figures, over 250 biographies, and spent more than 300 hours studying.“Because of COVID, they canceled New York. It's sort of disappointing, but at least I had an amazing opportunity to be a co-champion," Kelley said.The winners of the contest split ,000. Kelley donated his portion to a local charity.Despite not being able to compete in the history bee Kelly was able to meet the other finalist via Zoom and his favorite author Jeff Kinney.Kelly says he has a passion for history.“It’s important to learn history because if we don’t learn about it, it will happen again, possibly,” says Kelley. “We can learn from the good things that will happen again.” 1381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego veteran is suing 3M Company alleging earplugs he wore while in the military were defective. He’s the latest in a series of lawsuits that have been filed against the company by service members across the country.Kevin Alicie filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming he “used Defendant’s dangerously defective Dual-ended Combat Arms? earplugs during tank firing, training firing, other live fire training, vehicle maintenance, and during other training and combat exercises.” According to the lawsuit Alicie wore the earplugs while at Camp Pendleton and was first diagnosed with hearing loss in California. Alicie tells 10News during his military carrier he started having problems with his hearing. He’d hear ringing. He says he didn’t think much about it until the ringing started to become more frequent.“I mentioned it to the doctor when I was doing my final physical, and sure enough when they did that last hearing test they found that there was hearing loss,” Alicie said.The lawsuit says 3M did not inform the military or Alicie that the earplugs were defective and failed to adequately warn that the earplugs did not meet the military’s sound requirements."The biggest defect is they don't do what they are advertised to do,” said Alicie’s attorney John Gomez. “Essentially they are supposed to protect your ears and your hearing in proximity to loud sounds that can cause hearing loss or damage.”Attorney John Gomez says the earplugs were standard issue in certain branches of the military between 2003 and 2015.“Without question, I think tons of users-consumers and potential victims reside right here in San Diego County,” Gomez said.According to a July 2018 press release from the United States Department of Justice, 3M agreed to pay .1 million to resolve allegations that it supplied the United States with defective dual-ended combat arms earplugs.The release says, “the United States alleged that 3M, and its predecessor, Aearo Technologies, Inc., knew the CAEv2 was too short for proper insertion into users’ ears and that the earplugs could loosen imperceptibly and therefore did not perform well for certain individuals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A trip to get some fast food in the Midway District turned into a nightmare after an encounter with a homeless woman and a syringe.Just before noon last Thursday, Ralph Bedoe was in the drive-thru line at a Taco Bell on Midway Drive. It was the busy lunch hour. He ordered but had to wait once he reached the pay window. As he waited, he saw a homeless woman in her 40s about 25 feet away."She was rambling, throwing up her hands, talking to herself," said Bedoe.He says the woman hit the hood and window of a bus in the parking lot, before she headed toward him."She kind of hit my mirror and started rambling ... I said 'Do you need something?' Don't know if that's when something triggered," said Bedoe.Bedoe's driver side window was open. His arm was resting there."All of a sudden she pulled up her left hand, which had a bag and a syringe with a needle sticking out. She pushed my hand into the car, and when she pushed my hand, the syringe entered my hand," said Bedoe.The woman then smacked his window and wandered off."Disbelief, hoping you're going to wake up from this," said Bedoe.As the shock wore off, the new father thought of his 6-month-old son. "If I did contract something, how is that going to change my life with him? How is this going to change with length of life with him?" said Bedoe.Bedoe must undergo seven months of blood tests to rule out a myriad of diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV. The uncertainty is nerve-wracking."A trip to Taco Bell should not end with a life-changing event," said Bedoe.Bedoe was hit with a ,400 dollar medical bill because he was switching over to new insurance and was not covered at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A three-year-old girl being evaluated for coronavirus at Rady Children's Hospital has tested negative for the virus.Frank Wicinski confirmed to 10News that his daughter Annabel has tested negative for the novel coronavirus. CDC confirmed the results.Wicinski says he and his daughter will now be returned to MCAS Miramar to finish out their 14-day quarantine. He told 10News his wife had to stay behind because she is not a U.S. citizen. He adds that his wife is doing well after testing positive for coronavirus.Wicinski and his daughter plan to fly home to Pennsylvania, then get his wife out of Wuhan when they're able to. Many of their quarantines are set to end next week. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A University of San Diego professor has been suspended from campus over alleged misconduct, the university confirmed to 10News.The professor's behavior reportedly violated the university's policy and "is antithetical to our mission and values," the university said in part. The professor was not named.USD officials are currently investigating the incident. The school said in a statement:"We are in the process of investigating the complaint. Our commitment to protecting employee privacy restricts our ability to share names or details of the incident. The professor has been suspended and removed from campus and is not permitted to return to campus or participate in any USD-related off-campus events while we conduct our investigation and initiate next steps."The nature of the professor's alleged misconduct was not detailed. 858
