Amman, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Jordanian King Abdullah II on Wednesday met with Xu Caihou, vice chairman of China's Central Military Commission, who is on his Middle East trip to boost ties with Arab countries. BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China seeks a win-win partnership featuring equality and mutual trust with the United States, as the two countries' interests are deeply correlated in the era of globalization, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said."Relations between China and the United States should be cooperative and win-win and not a zero-sum game," Yang said in an interview in Beijing Friday.Applauding the two countries' consensus to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship in the 21st century, Yang said China and the U.S. should boost mutual understanding and learn to trust and respect one another.Mutual understanding is the basis for cooperation and a precondition for avoiding misjudgments, Yang said, adding that China's peaceful development is not only in the interests of the Chinese people but also for the whole world.To strengthen mutual trust, the two sides should learn to respect each other's core concerns and eliminate outdated ways of thinking, said the foreign minister.China adheres to peaceful development and the opening-up strategy that highlights mutual benefit and win-win cooperation, Yang said.China and the United States should respect each other's social system and cultural tradition, and realize that the two countries are at different stages of social development, Yang said.The two countries should properly handle frictions and disputes through dialogue on equal footing, he said.Yang said the bilateral ties have not been without any dispute but "generally, the Chinese-U.S. relations have grown at a steady pace.""We urge the U.S. side to abide by the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and the U.S.-China Joint Statement. BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official Li Changchun has called for Chinese people to take a serious attitude to their work, while praising the accomplishments of a renown train driver.Li, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Wednesday after meeting with Li Dongxiao, a veteran train driver.Li Dongxiao, who has worked in the railway sector for 22 years, is widely known as China's first high-speed train driver, and the man who trained the country's first team of high-speed train drivers.Li Dongxiao, 40, also helped to write a high-speed rail driving manual."It took China five years to achieve what other countries had only acheived after decades of hardwork, and generations of railway staff had worked diligently to realize the goal... HANGZHOU, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Fire engulfed an electric appliance store in east China's Zhejiang Province Friday night, local police said.Flames broke out at around 8:30 p.m. at a store of GOME, China's leading electric appliance franchiser, in downtown Jinhua City, Zhejiang, according to the police.The store occupies the first three floors of a 13-storey residential building. The store was in business when the fire broke out."The fire has engulfed six floors of the building so far. At least 10 people from the upper residential apartments have been transferred to safer places by firefighters as of 9:50 p.m.," said a witness.The witness said there were people trapped on the 12th floor of the building, but the exact number of the trapped remained unknown.Ambulances are waiting on the road. So far, no casualties were reported.Fire fighters continue rescuing people from the upper floors by stairs.

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Traffic congestion has eased "obviously" in Beijing since authorities launched a string of new, stricter traffic rules and opened five new subway lines last month, a local transport official said Wednesday."On average, the duration of traffic jams has been reduced by more than two hours per day, from 3 hours and 55 minutes before the new year to the current 1 hour 45 minutes since Jan. 1," said Li Xiaosong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Communications.Li's committee has unveiled an index system of Beijing's traffic congestion, the first for the city.According to the system, 0-2 signified traffic was "smooth," 2-4 "generally smooth," 4-6 signalled "slight congestion," 6-8 "moderate congestion," and 8-10 "heavy congestion," Li said."Before the New Year, Beijing's congestion index usually stood above 8.2, but it has been 6 since Jan. 1," she said.Li attributed the improvement to the new traffic rules and subway lines.Massive traffic jams have long been a headache for Beijing, a city of 20 million people and 4.8 million vehicles. Last year, an average 2,000 new cars hit the city's streets every day.On Dec. 23, authorities in Beijing announced they will slash new car registrations to ease traffic gridlock. This year, the city will allow only 240,000 vehicles to be registered, about a third of the number of last year.Moreover, Beijing municipal government agencies and public institutions were prohibited from increasing the size of their vehicle fleets over the next five years.Other measures include higher parking fees in the city's central areas, and stricter traffic rules for cars registered outside Beijing.An odd-even license plate number system was introduced to allow cars to be driven every other day in peak hours in some congested areas.Beijing opened five new suburban subway lines on Dec. 30 with a combined length of 108 km, bringing the city's total number of subway lines to 14 and the total length to 336 km.Beijing was building more subway lines, Li said.The number of lines in the city would reach 19 by 2015. Then, their combined length would total 561 km. By 2020, the total subway length would increase to 1,000 km, she said."Developing public transport, especially rapid rail transit, is an important move for Beijing to ease traffic congestion and improve urban functionality," she said.Li Feng, who lives in Daxing, a suburban district in southern Beijing, told Xinhua Wednesday that he had felt the positive changes in Beijing's traffic."I used to drive at a speed of only 20 km per hour when I entered and left the city in the morning and evening rush hours, but now I can drive at 40 km per hour," he said.Yet many people are waiting to see the long-term effect of the measures as Beijing still faces pressure from the huge demand for private cars.The Beijing transport authority on Sunday revealed it had received 215,425 new car license applications, after this month's application period closed late Saturday night.But only a tenth of the applicants will get license plates this month, after a lottery is held on Jan. 26.
