INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana — After 15 suspicious packages containing pipe bombs were mailed to prominent Democrats, a former president and media across the country by a serial bomb maker, now there are new questions being raised about why the packages made it through the post office system without being caught. The mail bombs never detonated, but how did the packages get dropped off, sorted and sent to places across the country without ever getting stopped for being suspicious? WRTV television station in Indiana dug into what happens to your mail after it goes into the system and found that most mail never goes through any type of security screening during its travel to you. In fact, the post office says many items never get screened at all.The United States Post Office handles more than 500 million pieces of mail every single day. They say they simply deal with too much mail to screen every package individually. So, how does the post office keep us safe with so much stuff traveling through the system? The USPS Postal Inspectors say it has a specific program called the Dangerous Mail Investigations Program, which takes over when suspicious packages come through a facility.Recognizing suspicious mail starts with post office employees, according to USPS’ Domestic Mail Manual. Each post office employee is specifically trained to notice packages that are out of place or look odd. They also have specialized technology in some facilities that sniffs out explosives or chemicals that are inside mail. The employees and technology don't catch everything, but the post office says they do catch suspicious items. USPS also says they rely on people also receiving the mail to be on the lookout for suspicious items.According to USPS, the appearance of mail bombs may vary greatly, here are some characteristics that have repeatedly shown up: 1908

Interim Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson will be tasked with regaining the fractured trust of Aurora, Colorado residents after she was appointed the city's permanent chief of police during a city council meeting Monday night."I am honored, humbled, and energized by the trust the city manager, mayor, and council has placed in me. Aurora is a city that has experienced many triumphs and tragedies, and we sit at a crossroads for our city's future," Wilson said in a prepared statement moments after the vote. "I am committed to leading the Aurora Police Department to be an active and engaged part of this community in building a collaborative and constructive path forward. We will be a transparent partner dedicated to making Aurora a safer city for all, with respect for our diversity, and embrace of unity, and continual conversation about how we can do better."“I believe that she is the right choice to lead the Aurora Police Department,” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman tweeted Tuesday. “She has a lot of work to do to improve the image of this department and to rebuild trust between our officers and the community.”Wilson's appointment comes at a time when the embattled police department is under the spotlight for a series of controversies over the past year, most notably the violent arrest of Elijah McClain, who would die days later after encountering police the night of Aug. 24.The announcement came a few hours after it was revealed Aurora officers detained a Black family after mistaking their SUV for a stolen motorcycle from another state Sunday, the latest in a string of tarnishing encounters with residents in the community.Coffman said in an interview Tuesday that he believes Wilson is right for the job.“She is not afraid to make the tough decisions, and I believe that she is a person that can move this department forward,” the mayor said. “IT has had a lot of problems: Poor image, bad relationships with the community. So it is really going to take a tremendous effort and a lot of work to move the department forward, and I think she can do that.”Omar Montgomery, the president of the NAACP’s Aurora chapter, says he thinks that the recent incidents involving APD show that the department needs to take a serious look at the culture within the department and how it handles situations like the one on Sunday or the Elijah McClain incident.“We need something different because it seems like every other day there is something we are addressing related to the police department,” Montgomery said. “…If we can get rid of those officers and keep the ones that are doing a phenomenal job I think we will be on the right path to getting a police department that we, all combined, can trust.”Wilson was selected after a months-long nationwide search to replace Chief Nick Metz, who retired from the force Jan. 1.Wilson will continue to lead a department under scrutiny as communities around the nation reexamine the role and operations of police departments in the wake of George Floyd’s death.Marcus Dudley Jr., a commander with Aurora Police Department; Alexander D. Jones, a colonel and bureau chief for the Baltimore County Police Department; and Avery L. Moore, an assistant police chief with the Dallas Police Department, were the other three candidates vying for the position.Aurora City Council also on Monday unanimously passed a resolution banning Aurora police from using carotid holds, which was used on McClain the night of his violent arrest. The use of carotid holds had already been changed under department policy, but will now go before a final vote during the next city council meeting.KMGH's óscar Contreras was first to report this story. 3683

INDIANAPOLIS — It has been quite a journey for Kari Wegg. She had been working tirelessly as a NICU nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for more than 25 years when she found herself fighting for her own life with COVID-19 in that very same hospital.“It’s devastating. I never thought something like this could happen to me,” Wegg said. “It’s been so hard because I was healthy, and I thought if I ever got it, I would be fine.”Wegg first got sick in June and diagnosed with pneumonia. Then in July, she, her husband and two children tested positive for the coronavirus.“I do work in a hospital,” she said. “My husband also works in a hospital. It’s very possible we got it from the hospital.”Her family had mild symptoms and recovered quickly. However, Wegg did not.“It’s been since July since I’ve seen my boys., and I haven’t been able to hug them or love on them, and they miss me so much,” Wegg said.Wegg was put on a heart and lung bypass machine on Aug. 19. She says her doctors discussed removing care.“Their dad had to sit down and tell them their mother might die, and they’ve had to try and cope with that,” she said. But Wegg says her husband wouldn’t give up. Calls were made, and she was transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on Sept. 5 for a double lung transplant.Northwestern was the first hospital in the country to perform a double lung transplant on a COVID-19 paitnet, and Wegg was only the sixth such patient to undergo the surgery.“I am eternally grateful to the family of my donors,” Wegg said. “I don’t know anything about them or how they died but they gave me the gift of life.”Grateful to be alive, but devastated financially with non-stop medical bills, she suffers in her bed, while her fellow healthcare workers continue the fight. Wegg says she even has coworkers who have died of the virus.Wegg says she's praying that more people take the virus seriously."I’m hoping my message as a nurse who didn’t expect any of this can get out there and bring it home to people who don’t necessarily want to wear a mask or want to isolate themselves or quarantine," Wegg said. "This is real.”Wegg's sister has launched a GoFundMe to help cover the family's mounting medical costs.
