LA MESA, Calif. (CNS) - Authorities Monday reached out to the public for help in identifying a group of people suspected of breaking into and looting a La Mesa jewelry store following a protest against police brutality nearly four months ago.Surveillance cameras captured photos and video of at least six people suspected of breaking into Pierre's Jewelers, 8324 La Mesa Blvd., on the night of May 30, according to La Mesa police.Many of the individuals were wearing face coverings, but one woman had a tattoo on her left forearm and one man had tattoos on his right forearm, left forearm and right elbow.Anyone with information on the identity of the individuals in the photos is asked to call the La Mesa Police Department at 619-667-7532 or lamesatips@cityoflamesa.us.Tipsters can remain anonymous and may also contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.Over 50 crimes, including arson, vandalism, burglary and theft, were committed in La Mesa on May 30 and May 31, LMPD Lt. Greg Runge said.On May 30, a crowd gathered in front of the La Mesa Police Department at 2:30 p.m. to protest the May 27 arrest of a man at the Grossmont Transit Center, as well as the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25.A portion of the group then marched onto Interstate 8 at Baltimore Drive, blocking traffic in both directions for hours.Around 6 p.m., protesters remaining in front of the La Mesa Police Department threw rocks and water bottles at an armored police car nearby, and police deployed tear gas, pepper balls and bean bag rounds in an attempt to disperse the crowd.Later in the evening, the La Mesa Springs Vons market -- closed at 8 p.m. -- was looted. Nearby businesses were looted as well, including the Grossmont Center Target as well as several businesses in the La Mesa Springs Shopping Center.After 11 p.m., two banks -- a Chase branch and a Union Bank branch -- were engulfed in flames on Spring Street and both burned to the ground.As of Monday, 25 people have either been arrested or "had charges sought against them for various crimes," Runge said. LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. LAKE CHARLES, La. — Wrapping gifts during the holidays is a highlight for Stacy Williams, as she does it even for friends and family who ask her to do theirs. This year, though, the normally happy task masks a sad year.“There's no tree. There’s no decorations,” she said. “It's just not something that I'm used to because Christmas is my favorite time of year.”Williams and her family evacuated their rental home in southwest Louisiana just before Hurricane Laura in August.“Then in the midst of everything, between Laura and also [Hurricane] Delta, we lost my mom,” she said.It is a deep loss Williams is still trying to come to terms with, as she faces a potential new loss: eviction from her home.“So many people are going through it and it's just like, ‘what are we supposed to do?’” Williams said.It’s not hard to find damage around Lake Charles, but it is hard to find suitable housing for those who have been displaced, months after Hurricanes Laura and Delta tore through there.“It's been a very dynamic and ever-evolving situation,” said Stephanie Wagner with the American Red Cross of Louisiana.The Red Cross is working to help Williams and others find a new place to live because hurricanes impacted their work and living situations.“For the financial assistance that is provided, that is one of the uses that residents can use it for,” Wagner said. “It can be used for a down payment. It can be used to kind of supplement what they may need for any kind of rental assistance and we are partnering with other agencies including FEMA, to again find either temporary housing or more long-term and sustainable housing for these individuals.”However, for others not impacted by natural disasters across the country, help is far more limited and the potential for evictions far more widespread.According to the Census Bureau, one-third of all the households in the country are behind on their rent or mortgage.Aside from the District of Columbia, the states with the highest percentage of people facing eviction are South Dakota, followed by North Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, New Mexico, Wyoming, Ohio, Arizona and Louisiana.For now, Williams is just trying to stay positive and keep it all in perspective.“As much as you want to give up, don't,” she said. “Because even in the midst of all of this, I'm still going to hold onto faith and hope that ‘a way’ will be made out of ‘no way.’”The current COVID-19 relief bill that Congress has been working on would potentially extend the moratorium on evictions through February. Ortega Construction in Lakeside. The van is retro-fitted with adaptive equipment, a power ramp, and a low floor for the family, designed to help the family and Hayden get around easier as he grows up."Yeah it makes a world of difference between lifting him, putting him in a chair worrying about him trying to transfer, this thing he's ready to roll in and go," Hayden's mom, Ashley, said. "It was 100% shocking. It's going to make our lives so much easier. I've been looking at vans but financially I can't make that jump."Company owner Maurice Ortega said the gift couldn't go to a more deserving kid."Hayden's had so many surgeries, and he comes flying through the door a few days after surgery, and he pops in my office and he goes, 'what up Mo?,'" said Ortega. "He wants to know what your life's all about.
