LONDON (AP) — Britain’s chief medical officers have raised the nation’s official COVID-19 alert level, meaning the virus is in general circulation and the transmission is high. The chief medical officers of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland say cases are rising “rapidly and probably exponentially.”They say they are acting on the advice of the Joint Biosecurity Center and raising the level from three to four, the second-highest level.Chief Scientific Officer Patrick Vallance warned that without further action, the U.K. could see 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October, the BBC reports. He said that would likely lead to about 200 deaths per day.Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said infection rates are rising among all of the nation’s age groups and said it’s not acceptable for people to ignore health guidelines to engage in risky activity.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce further curbs Tuesday to slow the spread of the virus.Britain already has the worst virus death toll in Europe. 1052

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Officials say a Northern California county has begun a door-to-door coronavirus testing pilot program in a majority Latino community that has become a virus hot spot. Santa Clara County volunteers started handing out self-testing kits in the East San Jose neighborhood of Silicon Valley’s San Jose last week, where 55% of the population is Latino and officials say many residents do not have the ability or means to get tested. Communities of color nationwide have been disproportionately affected by the virus. Santa Clara County’s efforts come as more than 325,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine are on their way to California on Sunday amid record-setting case numbers and shrinking intensive care unit capacity. 739

Gavin Newsom are granted an extension until Jan. 15 to file California tax returns on 2019 income and make any tax payments that would have been due between Sept. 4 and Jan. 15."With more time to file and make certain payments, we hope to provide some relief to families and workers affected by these devastating wildfires," State Controller and FTB chair Betty T. Yee said in a statement. The relief applies to various upcoming tax-filing deadlines including:-- individual filers whose previous tax-filing extension was set to end Oct. 15. Any tax payments associated with the filings are not eligible for relief since they were initially due July 15-- business entities with a due date between September and Dec. 15-- quarterly tax payments due Sept. 15Wildfire victims may also claim a deduction on their 2019 income tax returns or next year's returns for a disaster loss sustained in an area proclaimed by the governor to be in a state of emergency, according to the Franchise Tax Board, which noted that those who have already filed tax returns this year can file an amended return.Taxpayers should write the name of the fire in blue or black ink at the top of their tax returns to alert the Franchise Tax Board. LONG BEACH (CNS) - The California State University system announced Wednesday that it is planning for an anticipated return primarily to in-person courses starting next fall."While we are currently going through a very difficult surge in the pandemic, there is light at the end of the tunnel with the promising progress on vaccines," CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White said in a statement. He noted that it was critical to provide as much advance notice as possible to students and their families, as the CSU system had done in announcing its moves toward primarily virtual instruction as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The CSU system, which locally includes CSU San Marcos and San Diego State University, announced in mid-March that its campuses would immediately transition in-person operations to a virtual mode, with the chancellor saying then that "the health and well-being of our students and employees is always a foremost priority."In September, White announced that CSU -- which held primarily virtual courses during the fall term -- would continue with predominantly online instruction for the academic term beginning in January."We are approaching planning for the 2021 fall term with the goal of having the majority of our on-campus experiences returning," said CSU Chancellor-select Joseph I. Castro, who will replace White in January.Officials have not yet determined "what the science will allow" for next summer's term, noting that determination will be made closer to the deadlines for summer 2021 student registration. The CSU system is the largest system of four-year higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, 53,000 faculty and staff and 486,000 students. 1694
