BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's major textile companies are expected to witness an annual increase of 8 percent in their value-added output over the next four years, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said Thursday.The ministry published a plan regarding supporting the development of the textile industry during the country's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), according to which the sector's exports will reach 300 billion U.S. dollars by 2015 with an annual growth of 7.5 percent.The industry is also expected to employ 20 million people by 2015 and its energy consumption per unit of value-added output will drop by 20 percent from 2010, the guideline said.The country will encourage the textile industry to enhance brand-building and aims to build 5-10 textile companies of global influence and 50 companies with an annual revenue of more than 10 billion yuan by 2015.The guideline warned of potential risks for the sector, including volatile changes in raw material prices, rising production costs and a complicated international trade environment.The guideline said the industry should develop new products and explore new markets to ensure a healthy development during the coming period.

SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- LG Electronics, the world's No.2 TV maker, said Friday that it will showcase a smart TV that runs Google TV during next week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.The LG-made Google TV powered by Google's Android operating system (OS) will be unveiled next Monday at the U.S. consumer electronics fair in Las Vegas, according to an e-mailed statement by LG.The Internet TV will offer its Android-based user interface, enabling consumers to enjoy web browsing and social networking, LG said. Multi-taking will also be available as the Internet surfing, social networking and TV functions can be run simultaneously.LG's three-dimensional (3D) technology will be available through its Google TV. UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to further strengthen its leading role in enhancing global nuclear safety and promoting relevant international cooperation.Wang Min, Chinese deputy representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at an open meeting of the 66th session of UN General Assembly on the IAEA report.IAEA shoulders important responsibilities in promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy and preventing nuclear proliferation, Wang said, adding that it needs to further summarize experiences and lessons of the Fukushima nuclear accident, assisting member states to enhance nuclear safety and emergency response capabilities.Wang urged the IAEA to "increase technical assistance to developing countries, improve newcomer's national nuclear infrastructure and promote the safe, secure and sustainable development of nuclear energy."The IAEA was also asked to strengthen nuclear safeguards regime, effectively prevent nuclear proliferation, and maintain an objective and impartial stand on sensitive and hot nuclear issues.China has always adhered to the principle of "safety first", he said. SANTO DOMINGO, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Haitian health authorities on Friday said the number of deaths caused by cholera increased to 6,435 in the Caribbean country since October 2010.The Haitian Health Ministry said the number of people infected with cholera almost reached half a million, although the ministry repeated the epidemic was decreasing.The report said 455,727 people had been treated due to cholera, and 242,205 had to be hospitalized.The western province of Artibonite suffered the plague most with 1,196 deaths. TAIPEI, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- A televised debate among three candidates for the upcoming election of Taiwan leader was held Saturday in Taipei, with cross-Strait issues highlighted in the first face-to-face debate before the Jan. 14 election.The candidates - Ma Ying-jeou, chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, Tsai Ing-wen who represents the island's major opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and People First Party (PFP) chairman James Soong - stated their political views respectively and debated with each other.Both Ma and Soong stressed the adherence to the 1992 Consensus in order to maintain peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.In November 1992, the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation reached the consensus that each of the two organizations verbally acknowledges that "both sides of the Taiwan Straits adhere to the one-China principle."Ma said the 1992 Consensus was "the best way" for the two sides to settle disputes and achieve win-win situation."If the 1992 Consensus was not adhered to, cross-Strait relations will be thrown to an uncertain state, or even regress," Ma said.While acknowledging achievement of cross-Strait relations since 2005 such as the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) across the Strait, Soong called for seeking "common benefits for all" with cross-Strait peaceful development as the precondition.However, Tsai continued to deny the 1992 Consensus and said that a "Taiwan consensus" should be made before negotiating with the Chinese mainland.The three candidates also expressed own views on judicial reform, finance and issues concerning people's livelihood.The televised debate was held by the Taiwan Public Television Service and other local media.Two more debates will be held on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.
