SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Superior Court officials warned the public Thursday about a scam targeting the Hispanic community in which a scammer reportedly threatens to arrest people unless they pay for items they never ordered.According to court officials, a woman recently showed up at court looking for a fictional courtroom number. She had been told there would be a hearing on her refusal to pay for items the scammer said she purchased.The woman was told to either pay ,500 or be taken to court. When she came to the courthouse, the woman discovered there was no such case and the threat was a scam.When court staff dialed the phone number provided to the potential victim, the person who answered said she would only speak in Spanish.Superior Court officials are now warning vulnerable non-English speakers about the scam."It appears these scammers are targeting members of the community they believe won't go to authorities or show up at a courthouse," said Executive Officer Michael Roddy. "It appears they believe they can just take the money and no one will report them."These scams happen every year; sometimes they tell people there are charges for failing to show up for jury services or charges for clearing up arrest warrants; this time it's charges for not paying for ordered items," Roddy said. "Once again, we want the public to know the court or law enforcement will not call you with this type of issue and court will never, ever demand cash as the way to make charges go away."The public is told to simply hang up or contact law enforcement if the scammer gets aggressive. 1604

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer accepted a nine-figure loan from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday to help the city finance phase one of the Pure Water San Diego water recycling program.Faulconer joined EPA Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler to formally claim the 4 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan. The city estimates that the first phase of the program will cost roughly .4 billion, including funding from the loan.San Diego will provide one-third of the city's drinking water through the Pure Water program by 2035, according to city officials. The city plans to break ground on the project's first phase in 2019."This federal funding is validation that our Pure Water Program is cutting-edge technology and a worthy investment for San Diego's future water independence,'' Faulconer said. "This is going to be one of the most significant infrastructure projects in San Diego history and will deliver clean, reliable water to our residents for decades to come.''As part of the first phase, the city will upgrade existing water facilities and construct new ones, like the North City Pure Water Facility near Eastgate Mall. Phases two and three will result in new water pipelines and facilities in central San Diego and South Bay.Congress enacted the WIFIA loan program in 2014. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 3,252 COVID-19 infections today, while virus-related hospitalizations continued to increase as the first batch of Moderna vaccines arrived in the area.The number of daily infections reported Monday marked the third- highest daily increase since the pandemic began, following only Friday's 3,611 and Saturday's 3,493. Together with Wednesday's 2,807 cases and Thursday's 2,604, the top five-highest daily case counts have all occurred in the past week.Monday's total also marked the third time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 and the 21st consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. It was also the 14th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The new cases gave the county a cumulative total of 129,717 confirmed cases from throughout the pandemic. The county also announced three more COVID-related deaths, raising the overall death toll to 1,283.Another 32 people were hospitalized as of Monday, with one additional person sent to an intensive care unit. A total of 1,296 people were hospitalized due to the virus, with 334 of those in ICUs -- both records.A drop of 43 non-COVID patients in the region's ICU freed up space Monday. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Prior to today's San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the Port of San Diego will host the annual Solar Turbines 5K run/walk and the Holiday Bowl Parade along Harbor Drive.The Port will host the 24th annual Solar Turbines 5K run and walk at 9:45 a.m. and the parade at 10 a.m. Participants in the 5K will run and walk from the corner of Harbor Drive and Ash Street to Ruocco Park. The parade will begin in front of the County Administration Building and process south down Harbor Drive to its intersection with Pacific Highway.According to Port officials, the parade will include 29 giant balloons, 10 marching bands and multiple floats and drill teams. The marching bands from Northwestern University and the University of Utah, the two teams playing in the Holiday Bowl, will perform during the parade."The Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade is one of the Port's signature events, bringing approximately 100,000 spectators, including many from out of state, to the beautiful San Diego bayfront," said Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Rafael Castellanos.
