SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whitney Climenson noticed something at her recent shift at a Carslabd restaurant. It wasn’t nearly as crowded, and there were only three people on the clock - about half the normal level. She's instead spending most of her time trying to get through to the Employment Development Department, and figure out why weeks of her jobless benefits are still unpaid. “I would wait for hours on hold if it meant talking to somebody, but they just say ‘Oh, we can't take your call at this time,” Climenson said. Climenson's one of more than 200,000 San Diego County workers who lost their jobs in March and April amid the coronavirus pandemic - a number that many economists expected to grow in May. “Here in San Diego a bigger portion of our economy is in food and drinking establishment employment, and so what we would see then is a big rebound in that area as well locally,” said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. The hiring - already picking up locally. Andrew Feghali just opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in Pacific Beach. He’s hosting a job fair Monday with at least 10 openings. “We start above minimum wage, so we want to make sure we get the best and the brightest, and another perk is that you get free food,” Feghali said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two girls were rescued at Sunset Cliffs by teenage bystanders on Friday after being swept out to sea.Local still photographer Jim Grant was hoping to capture the sunset at Sunset Cliffs Friday evening. But he got much more than just a beauty shot."There were some crazy things going on," Grant said.He ended up witnessing a cliff and water rescue."Two young girls ... They looked to be about 12 or 13," Grant said. "They were down at this point, and a large set came in and swept them off their feet.""The older one hit her head probably down on the reef and had a pretty serious head injury in the water," Lt. Andy Lerum with the San Diego Lifeguards said.Before first responders could arrive on the scene, two boys jumped into the water to help the girls. The two teenage boys worked to keep the girls above water until help arrived, lifeguards said, adding that their efforts were instrumental in saving their lives."It was big surf," Grant remembered. "The girls could not swim or couldn't swim very well, that's for sure. And it just could've been a tragic event if those two guys didn't happen to be here."Grant captured dramatic photos of the rescue, showing responders hoist one of the girls from the cliffs. In the end, Grant did get his sunset shot, just with an amazing cliff rescue in the foreground.Lifeguards remind folks that even in exposed reef areas, strong waves could come crashing at any moment. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Coast Guard officials Wednesday offloaded thousands of pounds of cocaine in San Diego after it was seized in international waters.The narcotics seizures occurred in four separate incidents off the coasts of Mexico, Central, and South America between July and early October.Alert (WMEC-630): Two cases seizing about 4,000 pounds of cocaine;Robert Ward (WPC-1130): One case seizing about 1,500 pounds of cocaine; andSeneca (WMEC-906): One case seizing about 1,400 pounds of cocaine.The narcotics have a street value of more than million, according to the Coast Guard."I am extremely proud of this crew for doing their part to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets," said Cmdr. Tyson Scofield, Alert’s commanding officer. "The Eastern Pacific Ocean is a challenging environment, especially on a ship that is in her 50th year of service, yet this crew persevered to disrupt the illegal flow of narcotics that fuels instability in Central and South America."The Coast Guard has increased its presence in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Basic as part of its Western Hemisphere Strategy. The area of water is known as a drug transit zone for Central and South America.During the confrontations in international waters, the suspected vessel is initially located and tracked by an allied, military, or law enforcement personnel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Wednesday, San Diegans who live in their cars rallied in Ocean Beach to press the city to allow living in vehicles, as residents in various neighborhoods pressure the city to ban the policy once again.Earlier this year, San Diego City Council members repealed its vehicle habitation ordinance after a federal judge found it unconstitutional which halted all enforcement.Then in March, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced an effort to bring a ban back. The ordinance would prohibit residents from sleeping in their cars from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. within 500 feet of a school or house.Residents say reversing the ban leads to broken glass, bottles of urine, drug paraphanelia, and excrement on sidewalks in some areas. But supporters of the policy said Wednesday they don't park in front of homes or litter along roads.The city says they’ve received hundreds and hundreds of complaints about what people living in cars have done to their neighborhoods. Currently the city is expanding a safe parking program that would allow people to park overnight at monitored sites. 1085
