SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Gas & Electric this week turned off power to tens of thousands of customers due to high wind conditions, but almost three days into the shutoff, some customers say they’re running out of options and need their power back now.East County resident Cynthia Chisum told ABC 10News, “It isn’t fun. We’ve lived in this house for 45 years. So, I know about power outages. But we’ve never had one of these preemptive power outages.”Chisum isn’t new to red flag warnings and what that comes with, as precautions are taken to make sure everyone stays safe.But this time Chisum is running out of options. Her family has been relying on candles, lamps, and battery powered equipment to make it through. Their big problem is the freezer -- without any power, their food is close to rotting.“We have a freezer full of fish that my husband caught during a fishing trip and we hate for all that to go spoiled,” Chisum said.Chisum said it was windy Wednesday night, but since then it’s been calm. That’s why she believes her power should be restored quickly.SDG&E posted an update on their website laying out their restoration plans, saying “crews are conducting visual inspections of each impacted circuit to determine whether there were any wind related damage before power can be restored.”The utility also said crews are looking for safety hazards such as downed lines, debris or tree branches caught in power lines. If no damage is found, power can be restored quickly.For those impacted by the outages, SDG&E has set up drive-thru resource centers where customers can get water and snacks or charge devices. 1646
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Resources are available throughout San Diego County for victims of domestic violence who believe their situation may turn life threatening.“There’s nothing more tragic than this happening. This is exactly what we never want to see happen again,” said Heather Finlay with the YWCA. Finlay says she was devastated after learning of the mother and her children killed over the weekend. YWCA offers an emergency shelter and transitional housing for parents and families dealing with domestic violence. According to SANDAG, in 2018, more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in San Diego County. “Leaving an intimate partnership is never easy especially if there are children involved,” said Yvette Lopez-Cooper with the San Diego Family Justice Center. The order doesn’t become active until the abuser is served and made aware of the action. “Many times, these court orders do work and the violent behaviors stops. A safety care plan includes having a packed bag somewhere safe with clothes and copies of personal documents and planning an escape route. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Residents downtown are fighting against adding more low-income housing. They say it's only making the homeless problem worse. Merle Jones moved to this East Village high rise for the views and the lush lifestyle."It's categorized as a luxury apartment complex, and there's nothing really luxury about it at all right now," said Jones. Homeless people frequent the streets and sidewalks outside the property. "There was a knife fight that broke out and that was in the afternoon," said Jones. "My girlfriend she's not even comfortable walking outside alone so its an issue."In an effort to fight the deadly Hepatitis A outbreak, more shelters and housing solutions are popping up downtown. One of them is a 16-story high rise for low-income families on 14th and Commercial Streets. "I don’t believe that's a good idea," said Jones. "I think they need to clean up the area because when you have that type of housing, it attracts attention from other areas."The high rise is one of five Father Joe's projects to add about 2,500 affordable housing units. One-third of them would be downtown. More than 500 people signed an online petition to move more housing solutions to other parts of the county. "I think it would be a nice distribution of the concentration of it so that way it's not just one area and one area's problem," said Jones. For now, he's stuck paying high rent for a view he's not happy with. "I pay quite a bit, so I expect a certain level of lifestyle when I'm living here," said Jones. "When my lease is up, I do plan on moving towards the other end of downtown that’s a little safer and a lot cleaner."The building is set to open January 2021. 1830
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed.In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city.The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups.The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts.The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. "This has truly been a citywide push to beautify our neighborhoods and we encourage San Diegans to keep using the ‘Get It Done’ app to report issues that we need to address in their community." 1631
