SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation launched a project Thursday to build an Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater with permanent seating in the cemetery's assembly area.The foundation, which sponsors the Avenue of Flags as well as the Veterans Tribute Tower & Carillon and the annual veterans' services at the cemetery, is working with cemetery leadership and the VA's National Cemetery Administration on the design of the amphitheater.The VA-required construction of the amphitheater and maintenance endowment are expected to cost between 0,000 and 0,000 -- the largest project the Support Foundation has yet undertaken at Miramar National Cemetery. No federal funds will be expended for the project."We're dedicating our fifth Annual "Virtual Gala" fund-raiser to the Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater, said Charlie Inot, Support Foundation president and CEO. "We're asking corporations, members of veterans' organizations and civic groups, as well as the public, to help make this vision for Miramar a reality through their generous contributions."The plan for the amphitheater includes long concrete benches arranged in a semi-circle within the existing flag assembly area. The benches would be fronted with stone, matching that used throughout the cemetery. Landscaping plans include artificial turf areas between the seating and around the amphitheater perimeter. The seating area is designed to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act requirements by providing handicapped access and wheelchair spaces."To accommodate guests at our veterans services in the past, we've had to set up folding chairs in the flag assembly area," said Sallay Kim, Support Foundation vice president and chair of the Virtual Gala. "That's not really satisfactory or comfortable for our guests, especially if the ground is too soft to properly support the chairs. Closure signs will remain posted in the affected areas until testing shows it's safe to go back into the water from Seacoast Drive to the U.S. Mexico Border. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The San Diego City Council unanimously approved the creation Tuesday of an emergency rental assistance program tied to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which will utilize .1 million in federal COVID-19 funds to support thousands of low-income residents experiencing financial hardships.The COVID-19 Emergency Rental Assistance Program will provide up to ,000 per household, assisting around 3,500 households total, according to the San Diego Housing Commission.Applications will be available through the housing commission's website no later than July 20."Our rental assistance program cleared another hurdle today, and in a matter of weeks over million will be directly available to thousands of renters struggling to navigate the financial challenges of the COVID pandemic," said City Councilman Chris Ward, who proposed the program's creation.Ward initially sought to allocate .9 million of the city's 8.5 million federal CARES Act funding for the program, but that amount was pared down following disagreement from other council members."The current .1 million is a start to what I hope is continued relief for residents, especially since this program gives us a mechanism to add funds as they become available," Ward said.To be eligible for the program, households:-- must be located within the city of San Diego-- have a household income at or below 60% of the San Diego Area Median Income-- must not be receiving any rental subsidies-- must not be a tenant of a property owned or managed by the housing commission-- must not have savings to meet their financial needs-- must have eligible immigration status-- must have experienced hardships directly related to COVID-19Priority will be given to families with children and households with people age 62 and older. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials reported 228 new COVID-19 infections, the smallest daily increase since June 19, raising the county's cumulative caseload to 32,975.No new coronavirus fatalities were reported Monday. The total death toll remains at 594.County health officials also reported five community outbreaks, bringing the number of outbreaks in the past week to 14.The latest outbreaks were reported in a restaurant, a restaurant/bar setting, a government office, a business and a grocery store, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency.The number of community outbreaks remains well above the county's goal of fewer than seven in a seven-day span. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households in the past 14 days.The number of patients hospitalized for treatment for coronavirus totaled 321 as of Monday, with 101 of those patients in intensive care units. Sunday saw the fewest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients since June.Of the total positive cases in the county, 2,752 -- or 8.3% -- have required hospitalization since the pandemic began, and 689 -- or 2.1% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.The county's case rate per 100,000 residents Monday was 101.6. The state's goal is fewer than 100 per 100,000. The case rate is a 14-day average and is based on the date of the actual onset of the illness in each patient, not the date the illness was first reported by the county. Lags in reporting often lead to delays in new confirmed cases being reported to and announced by health officials.The county reported 7,570 tests Sunday, 3% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 5%. The state's target is fewer than 8.0% testing positive. But county residents ages 20-29 have accounted for 25.5% of COVID-19 cases, the highest of any age group, according to county data.
