KANSAS CITY, Mo. — You likely know the feeling. You drop your phone and it breaks. It falls in water. It doesn't feel good. Maybe your phone just runs slow. All these issues can drive a person to run out and drop more than ,000 on a new phone. But experts say there’s still hope for your old device. The cellphone repair business is a billion industry. One of the biggest contributors is fixing cracked iPhone screens. “Yeah, I’ve broken a lot of phones… Probably like at least seven,” Jade Collins said. She brought her iPhone 7 Plus to iRepair at 55th and Troost. It had a cracked screen. “Someone else dropped it at a bar. I wasn't happy. I tried to make an appointment at The Apple Store, but they didn't have one available for a few days. I need it fixed now,” she explained. iRepair is one of the top Yelp reviewed cellphone repair shops in the metro. Scott Russell owns the business.“I'll tell you if it's fixable or if you need something new,” Russel said. A new screen replacement for iPhones, his most common service, costs to 0 depending on the model. “I just try to treat everybody like it's my own phone,” Russell said as he used a tiny screwdriver to take apart the phone. At Setcell in Westport, the hum of what looks like a hairdryer mixes with the chime of the door opening with new customers. A tech was finishing repairs to a new iPhone 6. Setcell is another area cellphone repair company that is highly reviewed on Yelp. It’s owned by Tyler Herndon.“We're becoming more dependent on our phones, and we use them more. We're harder on them,” he said. Setcell charges to 9 to replace a cracked iPhone screen depending on the model. Third-party parts vs. Apple partsThe Apple Store requires customers to make an appointment at one of its two locations in the metro. If your phone doesn't have Apple Care, which is protection Apple sells with new products, it costs 9 - 9 to replace an iPhone screen.Apple Stores are the only locations in the metro where you can get authentic Apple parts. Third-party repair businesses have to use third-party parts. The quality of the third-party parts depends on the repair shop’s supply chain. Many of the top-rated shops import the best available parts. However, Apple doesn't allow repair shops to use Apple parts. 2391
JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. RELATED: City of San Diego moves forward with undergrounding more power linesThe project is part of SDG&E’s effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and shutting down power during windy weather. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. RELATED: Map: City of San Diego underground utility lines“To put all those lines underground is gonna be a major undertaking,” said resident Michael Lang. Phase two of the project will add underground lines along the 78. Currently, there is no timeline on when the project will begin. 1308

Justice Brett Kavanaugh, fresh off a confirmation process that featured one of the most polarizing and politicized hearings in modern times, will take the bench on Tuesday for the start of a new era that is expected to take the court decidedly to the right."I was not appointed to serve one party or one interest, but to serve one nation," Kavanaugh said Monday night during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House."America's Constitution and laws protect every person of every belief and every background," he said.Kavanaugh, 53, began work immediately after his official swearing-in on Saturday evening even as protesters stormed the front steps of the Supreme Court and pounded on the 13-ton bronze doors, furious that he had been confirmed despite a decades-old allegation of sexual assault brought by Christine Blasey Ford. 842
JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) — Hidden deep in the East County is a little-known winter wonderland. The centerpiece is a remarkable treehouse designed with a Christmas theme. It was built in 2013 in the yard of the Wellington family's Jamul yard for the Animal Planet television show "Treehouse Masters." The Wellington's daughter had heard of the show and suggested her parents apply. RELATED: MAP: San Diego's best holiday light displays to see this year"We had always promised her a treehouse and by the time we got this, she was in her 30's. So she had to wait quite a few years to get her treehouse," Kathie Wellington told 10News.Originally, Kathie planned to use the home for her grandchildren and as a fun meeting spot for an organization dear to her heart: FORBS (Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas). Each year, FORBS chooses around a dozen San Diego families who are down on their luck and provide Christmas presents, each delivered on Christmas day by a Santa. The Wellington's and their daughter, Vikki, came up with the idea of using the treehouse as a fundraiser. One weekend each December, they open up the treehouse for family pictures. The fee includes professional photographs, a real bearded Santa, cookies, hot cocoa, and craft activities. With 100 appointment times available, the event raises thousands each year.RELATED: Holiday parades: Festive San Diego parades to catch this season"The children just smiling and laughing and tearing open their gifts, it's hard to describe. JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- More than 1,600 people will be without power in Julian Wednesday as San Diego Gas and Electric crews work to replace equipment. The power company said power will be turned off from noon to 5 p.m. to accommodate the work. “To minimize impact on schools, the planned outage is occurring on a day when schools in the area are scheduled to get out early,” the company said.
