SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is preparing to uproot their lives and move across the country so their 2-year-old son can get a life-altering liver transplant.After Gavin was born, Kendra and Vince Giacalone waited nearly two years for answers on what was wrong with their son.Eventually, through exome sequencing, they learned Gavin had a rare genetic disorder: GM3 Synthase Deficiency. He's missing an enzyme which helps with brain development.The family read online there was no treatment or medicine for their son but they refused to give up.After connecting with specialists they are now hopeful a liver transplant from Kendra's sister will replace the enzyme Gavin is missing.The family will move to Pittsburg for several months while Gavin gets the transplant.All transplant costs are being covered by the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA).The family is trying to raise ,000 for COTA in Gavin's name - 100 percent of donations will go to Gavin.You can also follow Gavin's Rare Journey on Facebook.  1041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric.With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need.The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley.Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A local high school teacher is using her classroom to foster conversations about social justice. In light of recent events, the community has stepped in to make sure the talks continue.Racism, diversity, and inclusion are just some of the words that sit on Jennifer Koller's vocabulary wall inside of her Steele Canyon High School classroom. Three years ago, she decided a class with those topics were needed for her students."The course was designed after years of watching the kids disconnect from the curriculum that didn't feel relevant to them," says Koller.With materials found at Teaching Tolerance, an aid for educators, it allowed her to shape the Literature and Social Justice course.It starts with identity, it moves to diversity, has justice, and ends with action," says Koller. "The last unit is when students really get to pick their own social justice issue and educate their classmates on something that's near and dear to their hearts."Recent Steele Canyon graduate, Tia Saunders, took Ms. Koller's course. She says it allowed students to have tough conversations, like race, with each other."It gave us all a chance to really just see everybody's side and truly pick whatever you want to do and understand why everybody thinks the way that they do," says Saunders.Koller says after seeing the recent events around San Diego and the country, following the death of George Floyd, she reached out to the community for help getting new anti-racism books for the class. The books were fully funded in less than two days."I feel my step into this next is to foster more intense and courageous conversations about race," says Koller. "I just wanted to start the new school year with ultimately the most relevant and interesting materials for the kids in my class."Students taking the Literature and Social Justice course will receive high school credit and credit towards admission to CSU and University of California schools. 1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person is back in ICE custody and in isolation after they were taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center to be evaluated for possible coronavirus symptoms.The individual was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when officials determined the person needed to be taken to Sharp Chula Vista, the county said. Medical professionals at ICE detention facilities medically screen all new ICE detainees within 24 hours of their arrival to ensure that contagious diseases are not spread throughout the facility, and elsewhere. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A possible theft ring may be 'fishing' for checks at local post offices.Kevin, who owns a small business, mailed out several checks to vendors at the post office in Poway on a Friday night. On the next Tuesday morning last month, he got a call from his bank, Wells Fargo. A woman had tried to cash a fake check at a bank in Los Angeles, a typed check for nearly ,500 written out to a woman's name from Kevin's business. The bank rejected it. The bank representative then asked him about two other checks that had just been deposited at other branches. The two fake checks - written out to a different woman for some 0 each - had been deposited for cash in the Los Angeles area."There's definitely anxiety. You don't know how much money has been compromised," said Kevin.Kevin is not alone. In April, 10news featured the story of Barbara Reynolds and her state tax check, stolen and altered after she dropped it off at post office in Mira Mesa. Her check was likely 'fished' out by thieves using a rodent glue trap, before being washed. A chemical solution dissolves away the ink, allowing a thief to fill in the blanks.Another theft victim told 10news the Postal Inspection Service supervisor described to him a possible theft ring that has hit post offices in Encinitas, Poway and Mira Mesa in recent months. 10news has also tracked down reports of similar thefts in Sorrento Valley and Rancho Bernardo."It's frustrating. Never crossed my mind that something dropped off at post office could be compromised," said Kevin. Kevin's bank did cover the loss of the fake checks. 10news reached to the Postal Inspection Service but haven't heard back.Experts say use the slots inside the post office and if you do use an outside collection box, drop off your mail before the final collection time. 1823
