LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A water main break created a sinkhole Friday, swallowing cars and flooding streets in South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said a 24-inch cast iron water main broke around 5 a.m. near Towne Avenue and East 55th Street."We can't shut it down fast. On this shutoff, there's 12 valves involved. You just can't shut it down completely. You have to keep some water in the system. It's just a slow process," Eric Shavly from LADWP told KABC. "Whatever the cause, it could be corrosion, age - we don't know at this moment until we dig down and see the actual damage on the water main."A pickup truck that fell into the sinkhole also cracked a gas line, causing gas and water to be shut off to the area. 41 people were evacuated during the emergency, KABC reported. After four hours, crews gained control of the flow. The cause of the water main break was unclear. 910

LOS ANGELES — Britney Spears wants to be freed from her father. In a recent series of court maneuvers, Spears has sought greater say over her life and affairs, which for 12 years have been under the control of a court conservatorship run mostly by her father, James Spears. Tuesday, a Los Angeles judge will hear arguments from Britney Spears' lawyer and possibly from the celebrity herself that her father should be removed in favor of a corporate finance company. James Spears argues in his own filings that as her conservator he has saved his daughter's fortune and career. 584

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Public health officials in Southern California are taking extra precautions this Fourth of July weekend as Los Angeles experiences a spike in COVID-19 cases. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is ordering the county’s beaches be closed Friday morning through Monday morning. Officials hope this prevents dangerous overcrowding that could result in the spread of the novel coronavirus. For that same reason, the department is also prohibiting fireworks displays in the county during the holiday weekend.Beach parking lots, piers, bike paths and access points will be closed, as well. The health department says key metrics show steep increases in community spread. On Monday, officials announced more than 2,900 new cases of COVID-19, which is the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began.Projections by the Department of Health Services show a clear increase in area hospitalizations in the coming weeks, which could cause a surge in the health care system.“Closing the beaches and prohibiting fireworks displays during this important summer holiday weekend was an incredibly difficult decision to make, but it’s the responsible decision to protect public health and protect our residents from a deadly virus. The Fourth of July holiday weekend typically means large crowds and gatherings to celebrate, a recipe for increased transmission of COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health. “We all need to take this virus more seriously and residents and business owners must do their part. Physical distancing isn’t optional, wearing a face covering isn’t optional, spending time only with those you live with isn’t optional — these are requirem

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — A helicopter crashed offshore near Jones Inlet Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.Officials said the pilot, a 64-year-old man, appeared to be attempting a controlled descent at Meadow Island at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The chopper landed in an area with about three feet of water.Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and several other local agencies responded. The pilot was rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, including a facial laceration and back and rib pain. He was the only one on board. There was also some damage to the helicopter.Chief Petty Officer David Turner of the U.S. Coast Guard said he did not know the cause of the crash, nor did he know details of the flight plan. There was very thick fog in the area Wednesday, and while Turner did not know if it was a contributing factor to the landing, he said it's difficult to operate in those conditions.Visibility was only a half-mile in the area at the time of the incident with misty conditions in the area."I kept on hearing this helicopter, circling and circling, and after a couple of circles, it didn't sound right to me," said Damian Walsh the man who helped rescue the pilot and took video of the immediate aftermath.Walsh was out on his boat when he says a thick fog quickly rolled in around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon."It turned pretty quickly probably had about 20 yards of visibility," he said.He and another boater rushed to the scene after hearing a loud splash. One coast guard officer told Walsh that the pilot fell 1,000 feet in three seconds. The helicopter fell into shallow water."He was lucky; if he fell 50 yards over, he wouldn't have survived," Walsh said. "I got him on the boat; I called his wife, let her know he was alight."Walsh said he and a couple of other Good Samaritans got him over to rescuers."They wouldn't have found him in that fog. I was in the right place at the right time," he said. The investigation into the landing is ongoing. This story was originally published by Corey Crockett and Cristian Benavides on WPIX in New York City. 2123

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - An autopsy could be conducted as early as Monday on award-winning former USC offensive lineman Max Tuerk, who died while hiking with his parents on a favorite trail in the Cleveland National Forest. He was 26.Tuerk was pronounced dead at 3:14 p.m. Saturday at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, according to Supervising Deputy Orange County Coroner Erica Arellano. There was no immediate indication of an apparent cause of death, Arellano said.Tuerk was the first-team All-Pac-12 center as a junior in 2014. He started the first five games at center in 2015, then tore ligaments in his right knee and underwent season-ending surgery. Despite the injury, he won USC's Most Inspirational Player Award.Tuerk was a captain both of his final two seasons with the Trojans.Tuerk started USC's final five regular-season games at left tackle as a freshman in 2012 and at left guard in its 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.Tuerk started 13 games at left guard and one at right tackle in 2013, receiving All-Pac-12 honorable mention."Heartbroken by the loss of Max Tuerk," Trojans coach Clay Helton tweeted. "Incredible person, teammate, and Trojan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."The 6-foot-5, 298-pound Tuerk was chosen by the San Diego Chargers in third round of the 2016 NFL draft, the 66th overall selection. He was inactive for all 16 of the team's games in 2016, their last in San Diego.Tuerk was suspended by the league on Aug. 22, 2017, without pay for the first four games of the regular season, for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances."This off season, I made the mistake of taking over-the-counter supplements," Tuerk said. "In doing so, I opened myself up to the possibility of consuming a tainted supplement -- something that ultimately led to a positive test for a banned substance."I accept responsibility for my actions and understand the NFL's policy is very clear on this matter. This is a very hard way to learn a lesson and I will never make this mistake again."The Chargers issued a statement saying they "respect and support the league's decision on this matter. While disappointed, we appreciate that Max has accepted responsibility and are confident that he understands what is expected from him moving forward."The Los Angeles Chargers waived Tuerk on Oct. 3, 2017, one day after he became eligible to return to their active roster because the team was "pleased with the guys that we have," coach Anthony Lynn said. The Chargers signed Tuerk to the practice squad Oct. 26. The Arizona Cardinals signed Tuerk off the Chargers' practice squad on Nov. 6, 2017. He played in his lone NFL game on Dec. 24, 2017. He was released by the Cardinals on April 12, 2018.Tuerk was an alumnus of Santa Margarita High in Orange County's Rancho Santa Margarita and was selected to various All-America teams as a senior in 2011."Max loved his teammates, coaches and schools," his family said in a statement. "Max was a loving son and older brother and his passing leaves a giant hole in our hearts. His strength and work ethic is an inspiration to many." 3129
