SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Investigators are still piecing together the circumstances surrounding the 2-year-old girl who died after she was found in a hot car in Tierrasanta. Police tell 10News the mother called 911 Monday afternoon, saying she had just woken up from a nap and could not find her daughter in their home on Leary Street.The woman later called back and said she found her daughter in her Nissan Altima, unresponsive and not breathing, according to police. It is still unclear how long the child was in the vehicle. The Child Abuse Unit is now investigating.“The biggest mistake anyone could ever make is to think that it couldn’t happen to them,” said Janette Fennell, founder of Kids and Cars. The organization’s statistics showed 26 kids have died after being left in a hot car so far this year. Right now, technology does exist to alert families of an unattended child in a vehicle. One device is called “Sense-A-Life,” created by two Florida dads. It involves a sensor placed under a car seat. If you put the vehicle in park and open the door, an alarm will remind the driver of a child in the back. If there’s no response, it will send an alert to our phone. A few cars, like the Kia Telluride, has a sensor system built into it. It warns the driver when you exit your vehicle that someone may still be inside. The vehicle’s horn will go off if you have not returned to open the door.Fennell said there is a push to get the Hot Cars Act passed at a federal level. It would mandate technology in all vehicles that would alert drivers to someone left in their car, but she said there has been resistance. “It probably comes down to money, but it also comes down to the auto industry that fights against all these types of things,” Fennell said. “Every single safety item in your vehicle people should understand have been very long, hard battles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jessica Mattly was all smiles Thursday, ironically, thanks to the state Employment Development Department.“For the first time they called me,” she said. “I didn't call them. It was great.”A representative from the EDD, which issues unemployment insurance payments, called Mattly to tell her that they finally processed her application for jobless benefits. They’d begin by sending her four weeks of backpay.Mattly’s had been trying to get through to the EDD since she lost her job at a San Diego resort in late March, when Coronavirus restrictions went into effect. She filed for unemployment immediately, but like thousands of other San Diegans, got a request from the EDD for identity verification.She submitted the necessary documents, but never heard anything back.“I would just keep dialing, and keep dialing, and keep dialing, and I understand the definition of insanity. I do. And it felt like that was my only option,” she said.Mattly kept running into walls, until she turned to State Sen. Ben Hueso’s office, which contacted the EDD on her behalf.That lead to Thursday's phone call.Others, like Audee Kammer - just wouldn't take no for an answer.The EDD denied her identity documentation twice. She called hundreds of times - finally appealing the denials and getting a telephone hearing with a judge, who authorized payments.“I could see how some people, it could just throw them into deep depression and despair,” she said. “I feel for a lot of people out there that are in my same situation that I was and don't have the drive to keep knocking on that door.”Meanwhile, the latest state numbers show more than 230,000 San Diego County residents are unemployed.The EDD says its funding has increased drastically since the pandemic began and is now undertaking a massive hiring effort.It has filled 900 new positions to process an unprecedented amount of claims - with an additional 1,900 openings.Sen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In-person voting kicked off in San Diego County on Saturday, welcoming voters to the polls early through Election Day.The polling locations will be open through Monday, Nov. 2, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and reopen on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 235 super poll locations in San Diego County for in-person voting.Margie Singley is one resident who chose to vote in person on the first day. She said it was fast and easy.“I thought maybe it might be crowded so if it was busy today I might come tomorrow or Monday to avoid the crowds,” said Singley.She said that she felt an added level of security by voting in person and did not have any concerns about coronavirus because necessary steps were taken inside the polling place. “Not at all, so no fear. Come on in!” she said.Liza and Joe Kennedy turned in their filled-out ballots to a drop off location on the same day. They said it was their first time filling out their ballots from home, and they appreciated being able to take their time in the comfort of their own home.“It’s a safety reason too, you’re not sharing pens, you’re not in the same little fold up booth. You can do it in the security of your own home,” the couple said.Mary Criscenti and Allyson Brenner are the poll workers who collected the Kennedy’s ballots. The duo cheered on voters as they dropped off their ballots, saying everyone who stopped by had high energy all morning.“Everyone is happy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090
