To All Members of the U-M Ann Arbor Community:The University of Michigan has received and acted on allegations of sexual misconduct against Martin A. Philbert, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. With the endorsement and full support of the U-M Board of Regents, I have placed Dr. Philbert on administrative leave, effective Jan. 21, 2020, pending the results of an investigation we began on Friday, Jan. 17.I will follow up in the coming days regarding the appointment of an acting provost and executive vice president for academic affairs.We take allegations of sexual misconduct very seriously, and our policy is clear: Sexual misconduct will not be tolerated in the University of Michigan community.I want to apprise everyone of what has happened over the last few days and the actions we have taken. On Thursday and Friday, Jan. 16-17, 2020, the university received several allegations of sexual misconduct by Dr. Philbert. We began an internal investigation Friday. Over the next three days, the university retained an outside law firm which immediately launched an investigation of the allegations, our Division of Public Safety and Security was engaged, and Dr. Philbert was directed not to report to work. I placed him on administrative leave Tuesday.The Office for Institutional Equity, who would normally handle such investigations, reports to the provost. Today, I have moved OIE’s reporting line for all matters related to this investigation to Associate Vice President for Human Resources Richard S. Holcomb.The U-M Board of Regents and I are committed to a full and thorough investigation, and we will continue to work to ensure the integrity of the process, following the same policy and practices that apply to all employees at U-M. It remains early in the investigation, and no findings or conclusions have been reached.We thank the individuals who have come forward with these allegations. We know that reporting requires courage. This year's National Voter Registration Day was the largest in history, in part, because businesses assisted people to register or update their information. Many businesses say it's their duty to help people vote.Tanger Outlets in cities such as Daytona Beach, Florida, San Marcos, Texas and Savannah, Georgia, held registration events for shoppers coinciding with National Voter Registration Day. This year, records were smashed on National Voter Registration Day as 1.5 million voters registered, and hundreds of those were through the Tanger Outlet event.“It spoke to the traffic that the center saw that particular day, but we’re going to make this an annual event because of the returns they got,” says Stephen Yalof, president and chief operating officer of Tanger Outlets.“We’re very youth oriented, youth conscious in that we feel like the younger people in America have a voice and we want to make sure that we get a hold of them and make sure that they register and have a chance to have their voices heard when it comes to voting,” says Yalof.Tanger is just one of the many businesses that felt the need to get involved.“We’re very clear; we’re an ice cream company but we believe with adding a little bit of sweetness to assist the groups who are working on the front line who work to bring systemic change in the world,” said Jabari Paul, U.S. activism manager for Ben & Jerry'sBen & Jerry's, he says, does so much more than make and sell ice cream.“People can walk into our shops and there’s usually information somewhere up in the shop that informs you of the issues we care about, the issues our partners are working on," Paul said.These days, Paul says, that issue surrounds voting. Their "Scoop Shops" around the country are also called "action stations." Part of the campaign involves sending a text to easily check your registration status.“We believe businesses have a role to play in helping create a better society and that role can go far beyond corporate giving, and businesses have a huge platform they can lend in terms of uplifting very important issues,” says Paul.“You’ve seen so many people this year step it up, and I think you know, we’ve had some good corporate partners and efforts simply because people want to do their part and it's needed,” Ben Hovland, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, said.The bipartisan, independent group focuses on elections and how they're run around the country. In the early days of the pandemic, there were serious drops in registration because places where people register, like the DMV, were closed. So, Hovland says, the help from businesses is critical.“This year you saw a lot of - a real outpouring of community participation, both government officials, the EAC is a partner in that effort,” Hovland said. “Civic groups, also corporations, celebrities, sports teams just promoting this idea of voter registration and for people to get registered.”Depending on where you live, you may still be able to register or update your registration, which is critical to being able to make sure your vote counts. 3107

Tourism spending in Oceanside set a record in 2017, with visitors shelling out 1 million last year.The new numbers, from a study by Dean Runyon Associates, were announced at the city's 8th annual Tourist Summit."It’s an exciting time in Oceanside," says Visit Oceanside CEO Leslee Gaul. "We’re really going through renaissance here."The city has had seven straight years of growth in tourist spending. The numbers in 2017 were 10.1% higher than 2016. Employment in the industry is also growing steadily. Tourism supports more than 3,300 jobs in Oceanside, and jobs in that sector have had averaged a 5.1% increase since 2010.Tourists spent 0 million on hotel rooms in 2017. That's up 11% from the year before, and it's twice the amount they spent in 2010. That gave the city  million in Transient Occupancy Taxes, money that goes directly into the city's general fund to pay for city services, infrastructure, parks and more.Gaul thinks more people are coming to Oceanside because the city offers a more laid-back version of the Southern California lifestyle."We’re still one of the classics, Southern California beach communities," she says. "We really have what appeals to visitors today. They’re looking for that local, authentic experience and I think being slow to grow over the past few years has really been a benefit to our community."Local business owners say the increase in tourists is helping them expand as well. Arthur Escobar owns Oceanside Boat Rentals. He says business is so good, he's already bought two new boats for this summer season. He expects to buy two more by the end of the summer. He's also hiring 7 or 8 more employees for the season."This is a nice, friendly town," says Escobar. "There's no hustle and bustle, The beach here is incredible, three miles of big sandy beaches, you don’t get that most places."The study also showed a significant increase in spending at local restaurants. Gaul thinks that's part of what's fueling the city's renaissance. "There have been dozens of new restaurants opening in the last few years, and we have more on the horizon," she says.There are also more hotels planned, including a pair of new properties near the iconic Oceanside Pier. One will be a resort-style hotel with 226 rooms. The other is a boutique-style hotel that will have 160 rooms and incorporate a renovation of the Top Gun house.  2410

This year’s first rehabilitated eagle is released back into the wild Monday, at Pioneer Trails Recreation Area, just north of Aurora, Colorado.She was originally found near this park March 2, with no apparent injury, but she wasn't flying.“We tested her and she had a lead level of 18.3,” said Betsy Finch, manager of Raptor Rehabilitation. “And that is micrograms per deciliter. Anything above 10 toxic.”Bald eagles are getting sick and dying from lead poisoning after eating the carcasses of animals shot with lead bullets. The Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery Center typically sees 20 eagles a year, it’s already hit that number this year; only two have survived.For the past seven weeks, Finch, has nursed the eagle released Monday back to health, treating her for lead poisoning, as she has done with many other eagles.“This is a real eagle celebration today,” Denise Lewis, Director of Raptor Recovery said. “This is what it’s all about.”Before her big moment, she is banded and photographed.It's bittersweet. Finch invests a lot of time nursing these birds back to health. But she insists, she isn't sad to see her go.“Not really,” Finch said. “They don't belong with us.”Out in the wild, she'll go right back to hunting, and soaring free.“If she has a mate out there she will find that mate,” Finch said.And she said it's not too late for her to breed yet this season.If you find an injured raptor, such as an eagle or an owl, call the Raptor Recovery Rescue Hotline at 1866-888-7261. 1531
