The Defense Department has temporarily grounded all of its 245 F-35 fighter jets for inspection of a potentially faulty engine part in the wake of last month's crash in South Carolina.Initial data from the ongoing investigation into the September 28 crash indicates a fuel tube may have been faulty. In response, all US military F-35s will be inspected as well as F-35s operated by US allies."If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced. If known good fuel tubes are already installed, then those aircraft will be returned to flight status," the Defense Department said in a statement.Inspections are expected to be completed within the next two days, the statement said, and a defense official told CNN some aircraft have already been returned to flight status.The initial assessment is the faulty tube may be on older models of the aircraft, but all are being inspected. 911

The death toll from the ongoing Camp Fire near Paradise, California continues to grow as authorities found another eight bodies, increasing the number of confirmed dead to 58. The Camp Fire is the largest single wildfire in California history, now doubling the death toll of second-deadliest fire in California history. The number of confirmed destroyed structures also has increased to more than 10,000. The death toll could continue to rise as the Butte County Sheriff's Office said that nearly 100 people remain missing. Most of the missing are elderly residents of Paradise.  One bit of good news is that officials are starting to get the fire under containment. The Camp Fire scorched 138,000 acres and is now 35 percent contained. Meanwhile, authorities continue to battle a massive blaze in Southern California. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidance that recent studies have indicated that cloth masks offer more protection against the coronavirus than previously thought.Previous guidance suggested that masks were best used for preventing the spread of the virus. The CDC now believes that masks are effective for both stopping the spread and reception of the virus. The CDC said on Tuesday that multi-layer cloth masks can both block up to 50 to 70% of fine droplets and particles and limit the forward spread of those that are not captured. Overall, cloth masks offer up to 80% blockage in human experiments. The CDC’s analysis found that cloth masks offer comparable protection as surgical masks.“Studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns,” the CDC’s guidance said. “The relative filtration effectiveness of various masks has varied widely across studies, in large part due to variation in experimental design and particle sizes analyzed. Multiple layers of cloth with higher thread counts have demonstrated superior performance compared to single layers of cloth with lower thread counts, in some cases filtering nearly 50% of fine particles less than 1 micron.”The guidance says that mandatory mask wearing can help prevent the need to implement economic shutdowns.“Adopting universal masking policies can help avert future lockdowns, especially if combined with other non-pharmaceutical interventions such as social distancing, hand hygiene, and adequate ventilation,” the CDC said.In an interview with Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that wearing masks is “two-way street.”"Recent data has now shown that as a matter of fact, there's also the added benefit to protect you from droplets and virus that's coming your way," Fauci said Tuesday on MSNBC."“You protect others," he added. The Department of Justice this week is sending a strong message to American cities: if you can't stop crime, federal agents may be on the way.On Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr announced the launch of "Operation Legend" — named after a 4-year-old boy, LeGend Taliferrom, who was shot and killed while he was sleeping in Kansas City last month.Kansas City is one of several American cities dealing with an uptick in crime. According to the Department of Justice, violent crime is up 40% since last year, with at least 100 murders so far this year.The New York Times recently reported the top 25 largest American cities had seen a 16% increase in murders in recent months.What is "Operation Legend?"The mission will send around 100 FBI, ATF and DEA agents, as well as some U.S. Marshals, to Kansas City to aid in crime prevention.Agents are not expected to assume command of active investigations but rather serve as a deterrent to violent crime."Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history," Barr said in a statement.Kansas City will not likely be the last place federal agents go.
