However, a new government pilot program will soon allow some drivers as young as 18 to drive cross country.“I feel like it would open up more job opportunities,” Amos says. “And maybe it opened up the eyes to some of the younger people maybe like actually try and do it.”The program would be available to some members of the National Guard and others with military experience. But in March, House Republicans introduced a bill to lower the commercial driving age to 18 for anyone driving state to state. Their goal? To fight a nation-wide truck driving shortage.Quincy Jones, who directs Sage Truck Driving School, says it's been challenging to attract driving students. He says ultimately, consumers pay the price.“Shipping costs get passed down the consumer,” Jones says. “So if there's a shortage, those aren't getting picked up as frequently. And so who pays them? We do. We all pay. Consumers do."The American Trucking Associations says the shortage is expected to hit 63,000 this year. But with motor vehicle drivers aged 16 to 19 being nearly three times more likely than people over 20 to fatally crash, not everyone believes teen drivers are the solution to the problem.“Younger people have less experience driving for all types of vehicles,” says Norita Taylor, with the Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association. “And so the crash rates are higher for younger people, and so we think it would be a dangerous idea.”Sponsors say the bill would require teens complete at least 240 hours driving supervised by a veteran driver.  2240

If you're interested in fish who are scary-looking, poisonous and chock-full of elaborate defense mechanisms, look no further than the stonefish, a genus of fish that populate coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific region.As if their deadly venom and spiny exteriors weren't enough, scientists at the University of Kansas have found that stonefish also have a hidden switchblade on their face that they can flick out whenever they feel like they're in danger.Scientists call the bony, blade-like protrusion a "lachrymal saber," because it is located on a bone under the fish's eyes. Also, "lachrymal saber" is just a really metal-sounding name.William Leo Smith, associate curator and associate professor of ecology & evolutionary biology at KU, first started to understand how the lachrymal saber worked 15 years ago, when he was dissecting a stonefish he kept as a pet.This is a game-changerHe tells CNN the mechanism isn't just a cool new discovery (although it's that, too). It also changes the scientific understandings and classifications of this particular type of fish."It opens up these ideas of ecological questions. Muscular systems, bone systems, nervous systems all came together to form this. What led to its evolution or use?In other words, he says, "Why do we see this accumulation of so many horrible things on one fish?"The lachrymal saber is housed inside the fish's head, and they use their cheek muscles to deploy it. If you are filing for divorce, it could take much longer than you think. There is a backlog in family court of about four months, according to the Court Executive Officer, Michael Roddy.  Sherman McEachern found that out as he was going through his divorce process. He and his soon to be ex-wife filed for divorce in October. McEachern said it should have been finalized in April. When he tried to find out why divorce documents were not mailed back to him yet, he learned it was going to take much longer. “I called the clerk’s office. That was the first time, I realized they were telling me we’re eight to ten months behind,” McEachern said.  It’s affecting him both personally and financially. “I can’t change health insurance until I have the signed divorce decree. She doesn’t want to use my health insurance because we’re separated, getting a divorce, so I’m paying for coverage no one’s using,” McEachern said. “We’re hearing a lot of complaints from people,” Roddy said. “They want to get divorced.” Roddy said this fiscal year, they’ve had to make million in budget cuts on top of a million deficit.  “That’s a million dollar hit to the court. We lost about 100 employees and we had a hiring freeze,” Roddy said.  In small claims court, Roddy said it takes about a year to set your case for trial.  When asked who is at fault for the backlog, Roddy said it started with the recession. “The recession hit California very hard, hit the courts very hard, and we have not bounced back to that level,” Roddy said. “It’s just very frustrating because every day, I’m still being tied to a marriage that we both have left from,” McEachern said. He added that it is “disheartening” that people pay for a process and the service isn’t being delivered. Roddy said they are hoping for more money in this next fiscal year, which they can use for personnel. He is expecting a flood of new orders in family court as the new tax law could affect divorce cases, with the changes in alimony payments. 2076
