Washington D.C. could become the first place in the U.S. to restore voting rights for felons who are behind bars.Councilman Robert White introduced a bill to make that happen, and says the justification is simple.“If you don't lose your citizenship for a crime, then you shouldn't lose your right to vote,” White said.Opponents to the bill say a prison sentence is meant to be a punishment and losing the right to vote is part of the repercussion of breaking the law.“When someone is incarcerated, they lose many of their rights. But we have to be careful to distinguish between what is a punishment for a crime and what is a basic right to democracy,” the DC councilman said.Vermont and Maine are the only two states in the country that currently allow felons to vote in prison. But the issue is getting national attention after Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he supports it.“I think the right to vote inherent to our democracy. Yes, even for terrible people,” Sanders said.Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has used the issue as a rallying cry.“Let the Boston Bomber vote. He should be voting, right? I don't think so. Let terrorists that are in prison vote. I don't think so. Can you believe it? Two officers in Honolulu have been shot and killed Sunday, Hawai'i Gov. David Ige confirmed. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that officers were responding to an assault call near the base of Diamond Head when they encountered a male with a firearm, who then opened fire, striking two officers. The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is at the far end of the Waikiki Beach between the Honolulu Zoo and the famed Diamond Head State Monument. The area would be packed with tourists and locals, especially on a weekend. A home the suspected gunman was believed to be inside has been engulfed by flames. "As we express our condolences to their families, friends and colleagues, let us also come together to help and support those who have been forever changed by this tragedy," Ige said.Footage from news cameras show that multiple homes were on fire. The Star-Advertiser reported that 12 homes were affected by the fire, five of them destroyed. When Shawna Justice was working on trapping some cats in a neighborhood in Riverview, Michigan, Saturday, she happened to see a dog in someone's yard and she thought he was dead. But when another dog barked, the lifeless dog lifted his head."To think he has spent God knows how long in that backyard dying like that is a very sickening thing," said Justice, who said that she called Riverview police Saturday in hopes of getting help for the dog that was in a fenced yard and no one was home. Justice said the officer on the other end of the line told her that he knew what dog she was talking about and said they'd been out there before and that his owners indicated the dog was about 18-years-old, had hip dysplasia and said there was nothing that could be done. Justice went live on Facebook with an urgent plea for people to call Riverview police to respond to her location quickly and get some sort of medical care for the dog that she knew could not withstand the heat much longer in his condition. The dog, that appears to be a Greyhound-mix, was emaciated. There was another dog in the yard and there was food and water available, but the emaciated dog was in no shape to get to it. Officers did arrive and could be heard on Justice's Facebook recording. "We're going to call animal control. I know they don't work on the weekend," said one officer, who told Justice that they would notify animal control on Monday. "She's suffering from that hip disease. Our canine has the same thing."The officers said they'd be back to check on the dog and see if the owner was home and then they left.
