But for those worried about the impending calvary of vehicles to the area, there are plenty of options to beat the rush.In addition to ridesharing options like Uber and Lyft, guests can choose from on-site or off-site parking. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Images of burning homes, helicopters and flames are now a regular occurrence in California.This summer, that wildfire threat became real for the Del Cerro community.“We could hear the exploding palm trees, we could smell the toxic, frightening smoke," remembers Glenn Thomas, Vice Chair of Friends of Del Cerro.The group wanted to do something to pay back firefighters for all they do for the community. They wanted to know what the department needs to help firefighters do their job better. “We believe you find out what people want and you give it to them!” said Thomas.Friends of Del Cerro teamed up with the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation to make something happen.What the department needs, Thomas learned, is more wildland firefighting hand tools. While these tools are currently on brush trucks, the department wants them on every engine.“There are so many more vegetation fires, and they grow so much bigger now," said Deputy Chief Steve Wright. “Something we needed that’s going to be a force-multiplier on vegetation fires that we didn’t have the immediate budget for."The group plans to raise ,000 for the tools and is halfway there thanks to a generous donation from the Padres.If you'd like to help, donate here. 1261

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than two weeks before Halloween, people across the county are getting creative and building candy chutes in hopes of a safer version of door-to-door trick-or-treating.In the yard of the Witthoft home in Lakeside, a large display stands in testament to a four-decade old family tradition of Halloween fright."We love Halloween. It's a fun holiday, a scary holiday. Seeing people dressed up. It's a lot of fun," said Chris Witthoft.Witthoft says part of that fun is handing out candy. That tradition, like so many things this year, is wrapped in uncertainty because of the pandemic."We've done it for so long. Just don't want to let the kids down," said Witthoft.So Witthoft and her family decided to build their own solution: two candy chutes created from PVC pipes and then painted. Witthoft and other family members will push the candy down the chute, staying six feet from the kids."All of us will have gloves and masks on, with social distancing circles along our fence," said Witthoft.Witthoft says the line to get to the candy will be socially distanced, while the chute and nearby areas will be constantly wiped down.To the west, in Rolando Village, Amberosia Vivar has designs on her own candy slide."Will make it out of PVC pipe ... It brings a little excitement for families stuck inside for months. I know my kids have been looking forward to Halloween for months," said Vivar.Across social media, ABC 10news has seen countless examples of San Diegans creating similar candy chutes, but is it safe? County guidelines recommend against any door-to-door trick-or-treating, a chief concern is kids congregating to get the candy. That 'congregating' is also a potential issue with the candy chutes. It's something the Witthofts and Vivar say they'll be watching out for."We can remind the kids, remind the families, maintain your distance," said Vivar."We want to be as safe as possible but still want to carry on our tradition for the kids," said Witthoft. 1995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Local San Diego County attractions announced Sunday that they will close as a stay-at-home order takes effect in Southern California.The restrictions for the region begin at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday.SeaWorld announced a temporary closure beginning December 7. The closure will remain until the region’s zoos are allowed to reopen, the amusement park said.“During this time, our veterinarians and animal care experts will continue to provide the animals that call SeaWorld San Diego home the same high level of care," SeaWorld said in a statement.
