Everyone has the iPhone. BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Materialism could be harmful to marriage, according to a new study published in the American Journal of Couple & Relationship Therapy Thursday.The researchers collected online "relationship assessment" questionnaires from 1,734 U.S. married couples.The questionnaire covered the topics about the couples' marital satisfaction, conflict patterns, marital communication, and marriage stability, and so on.Non-materialistic couples were about 10 to 15 percent better than those materialistics in their marital satisfaction, marriage stability and conflict levels, according to the study."What we found was a general pattern that materialism seems to be harmful to marriage," said study researcher Jason Carroll, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University.It didn't matter whether the materialistic spouse was the man or the woman, he added.However, materialism is not simply black-or-white: some couples can pursue their fortune and keep their relationship strong at the same time, the researcher suggested.But breaking their materialistic thought would be helpful for most couples, Carroll concluded.

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Internet search giant Google on Thursday released its third fiscal quarter earnings report, posting strong numbers that beat analysts' estimates.The Mountain View, California-based company reported revenue of 9.72 billion U.S. dollars for the quarter ending Sept. 30, 2011, an increase of 33 percent on a year-on-year basis.Google reported a profit of 2.73 billion dollars, compared to 2. 17 billion dollars in the same period last year. The earning per share, excluding certain items, is 9.72 dollars, topping the average estimate of 8.74 dollars per share polled by Thomson Reuters."We had a great quarter," said Google co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Larry Page in a statement. "Google+ is now open to everyone and we just passed the 40 million user mark. People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started."Many analysts took the third quarter to examine the company's progress towards expanding its core business beyond advertising which accounted for 96 percent of its revenue last year. NANCHANG, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- A copper sword dating back more than 2,200 years has been discovered in east China's Jiangxi Province, local archaeologists said.The design and shape of the sword indicate that it was forged during the Warring States Period (475 BC - 221 BC), according to Li Guoli, curator of the Nanchang Museum, where the sword is currently being stored.Despite having little aesthetic or scientific value due to a lack of decor or inscriptions, the sword still offers insights into the type of military equipment used during the period, Li said.The identity of the sword's original owner and the precise location where the sword was forged and used are still unknown, Li said.The sword was discovered by a laborer surnamed Xiong in Jiangxi's capital of Nanchang. Xiong found the sword while sorting and cleaning stones that had been dredged up from a riverbank.An argument between Xiong and another worker who was trying to claim the sword aroused attention from the local law enforcement, who then convinced Xiong to turn the sword over to archaeological authorities.

BEIJING, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's economic diplomacy will face growing challenges in the form of trade and exchange rate disputes, as well as the task of protecting overseas investment interests, over the next few years, experts said on Sunday.Next year will be an election year for the Unite States and France, and there is an increasing possibility for the two countries to use the "China threat" as an excuse for not dealing with their own economic issues, which will put Chinese diplomacy under pressure, said Ding Yifan, deputy director of the Institute of World Development of the Development Research Center of the State Council at a seminar on Chinese diplomacy.During the first half of 2012, several countries will remain in a grave debt crisis and may even see their crises deepen, Ding said, adding that this situation may create friction between China, the United States and Europe.Additionally, protecting China's growing overseas investments will pose new challenges for the country's diplomacy, Ding said.Chen Fengying, director of the Institute of World Economic Studies under the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, agreed that the protection of China's overseas investment interests will be an important task for Chinese diplomacy.During the past three decades, China has invested in more than 170 countries and regions, with outbound direct foreign investment topping 170 billion U.S. dollars.In the past 30 years, China has been focused on "bringing in" foreign investment; it may do more to facilitate its "going out" in the future, Chen said.Chinese economic diplomacy will serve the country's economic construction and the protection of its overseas interests, national interests and security, Chen said, adding that China's position in the world is closely related to its economic diplomacy.Chen said China has made several achievements in international economic governance, reflected by China's growing influence in the international arena and the posts held by Chinese officials in important international organizations.
