SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. "We contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department.""And I don't believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer," said Stewart.Stewart posted a copy of the email on his own Facebook page explaining that he is dyslexic and uses voice text, and that he published the note without proofreading what was recorded."I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. A Change.Org petition has started circulating demanding that city officials acknowledge that "systemic racism and police brutality exist in Temecula and the need for reform and consequence."Temecula, a city of about 115,000 residents in Riverside County, is located about 85 miles north of San Diego. The area is a popular Southern California destination known for its dozens of wineries, hot air balloon rides, and festivals similar to Northern California's wine country.Stewart's biography remains published on the city's website. It says that Stewart moved to Temecula in 1991 with his wife and three children from Oswego, Illinois. According to his page, the businessman owns eight barbershops in the area and that he has worked as a dentist during mission trips to Haiti pulling teeth and conducting eye glass clinics in Ethiopia. The city has not released plans to fill his vacant seat. He was elected to a four-year term in 2016.Here is Stewart's resignation announcement:Temecula StewCity of Temecula, I hear you, I agree with you, and I am deeply sorry. I owe everyone an apology including our citizens of all backgrounds and ethnicities, City staff, and my respected colleagues on the City Council. You have every right to be hurt and offended. My typos and off-the-cuff response to an email on a serious topic added pain at a time where our community, and our country, is suffering. I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry.I understand that even my sincerest apologies cannot remedy this situation. Because actions speak louder than words, I will step down as your Mayor and City Council Member effective immediately. It has been a true honor to serve this great City and its citizens. My love for Temecula and its residents is beyond expression.”Mayor Pro Tem Maryann Edwards states, “Stew is a hard-working and honest man, and the City accepts his resignation. Temecula is poised to close this chapter, and continue our long-term commitment to preventing racial injustice in any form. On this day of Mr. George Floyd’s memorial service, and on behalf of my council colleagues, the City of Temecula offers our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family.” 3623

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The family of Kimberly Fattorini is suing former San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman in connection with her fatal overdose, according to a TMZ Sports report.Fattorini's parents claim Merriman drugged and assaulted their daughter before she died at a house party in 2017, the report says.In a statement, Merriman's representatives said they are unaware of the lawsuit and that the original police investigation found no wrongdoing by the former NFL star. Her parents say Fattorini and her friends were invited to a club promoter's house party, and that Merriman "was allegedly witnessed carrying a bottle with some sort of liquid inside."At some point during the party, she texted the promoter saying, "you friend just poor'd half G in my drink," the lawsuit says. Her "parents believe G refers to GHB," the TMZ report says.Per the report, Fattorini's parents claim that first responders found her unresponsive and "half naked with jeans unzipped and buttoned" at a party in Los Angeles. A preliminary autopsy listed her death caused by a lethal cocktail of alcohol, cocaine, and gamma-hydroxybutyrate -- the last more commonly known as the "date rape" drug GHB.The suit alleges that while her autopsy did not reveal foul play, "a test for sexual assault wasn't done because officials said it wasn't conducted at the time of the initial autopsy, and couldn't be done properly afterward," the report says. The "complaint claims negligence, battery and a violation of the drug dealer liability act," and the Fattorinis are seeking damages, TMZ Sports reports.Merriman's representative told TMZ, "As of right now Shawne, nor his attorney, have any knowledge of him being named in any lawsuit. This alleged lawsuit is baseless. Shawne attended an after party more than two years ago where a young woman unfortunately overdosed.""The police thoroughly investigated and found no wrong doing whatsoever by Shawne. The fact that they are raising this now, two years after the fact, demonstrates the baseless nature of these allegations," the statement read.Fattorini, 30, is known for her work on The Hands of Time (2014), The Hi-Life (2012) and Badass! (2010), according to her IMDb profile page.Merriman played with the San Diego Chargers from 2005 to 2010 and retired from the NFL in 2013. 2319

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The journey has come to an end for hundreds of migrants seeking asylum in the U.S.A large caravan arrived in Tijuana within the last week and have waited until Sunday to cross the border into San Diego.Late Sunday afternoon, members of the caravan plan to turn themselves in to customs agents seeking asylum. Most of the roughly 400 migrants in the caravan are women and children who have been staying in shelters, seeking legal counsel before trying to cross the border.RELATED: Migrant caravan warned asylum may lead to separation from childrenBorder patrol agents released a statement Saturday saying several groups associated with the caravan have been illegally climbing a scrap metal border fence. The statement warned anyone with the caravan to “think before you act.” The Secretary of Homeland Security also said in a statement earlier this week that anyone seeking asylum “may be detained while their claims are adjudicated.”Protesters say the group is taking advantage of U.S. immigration laws. A group called San Diegans for Secure Borders plans to protest at Friendship Park. They say the migrants are unwelcome and that their claims for asylum are false. A protest was held on both sides of the border Sunday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The County of San Diego is providing free COVID-19 testing to all school employees returning to in-person learning, a recommendation by the California Department of Public Health. There are more than 80,000 school employees across the county. “This is everybody from bus drivers, to food service workers, to teachers, to administrators,” said Music Watson, the Chief of Staff for the San Diego County Office of Education, or SDCOE.While most schools are sticking with distance learning, for now, some are preparing to return to in-person learning starting in September. The school employees that do return will be tested for COVID-19 often.“The recommendation is that in any given two month period, you’ve tested 100% of school employees, with about half being tested in any given month,” said Watson. “People who are doing distance learning and teaching in a distance format and not coming into contact with students and school staff, they’re not going to have to be tested.”The county is partnering with SDCOE to develop more testing sites specifically for school employees by late September.Testing is currently available at the more than 20 county coordinated sites at no cost to school staff. If positive tests are discovered, classrooms, schools, and districts may need to shut down for two weeks.“If 5% of a classroom tests positive, that classroom would close, and they would self-isolate. If 5% of a school tests positive, the school would close for two weeks, and if 25% of district tests positive, the entire district would close for that two week self-isolation period,” said Watson. “In a classroom, 5% is basically one student or teacher, that’s why it’s so important to have a testing protocol in place.”If a classroom or school does have to shut down, students will continue learning for the two weeks.“That doesn’t mean all of a sudden it’s 14-days of no learning, it means transitioning to virtual which might be online or packet work depending on the particulars of that situation,” said Watson. It’s not currently recommended that asymptomatic children get tested for COVID-19, but if a parent or guardian wants their child tested, they should discuss it with their pediatrician. 2222
