SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tiger at an East County animal sanctuary has been killed by another tiger after staff accidentally allowed them to come in contact. ABC10 News confirmed that the surviving tiger is the same one that was rescued from a highly publicized smuggling bust at the border.Bobbi Brink is the founder of Alpine nonprofit Lions Tigers & Bears. She spoke to ABC10 News on Tuesday about Monday's incident where 7-year-old Maverick was attacked by another tiger named Moka in a tragedy of human error. No staff members or visitors were hurt. "It's a terrible accident and it occurred during the daily share that the tigers do every day when they put the tigers separately. Well, they accidentally put them in contact," she told ABC10 News.Moka sustained only a few scratches. He's the same tiger that was first reported on in 2017 when he was rescued from a smuggler at the U.S.-Mexico border. "They found him on the floorboard of somebody's car and he went to the zoo and the zoo couldn't keep him so he came to Lions Tigers & Bears," added Brink.Maverick was rescued in 2014 by California Fish and Wildlife staff after he was born in captivity and purchased illegally by a buyer who wasn't licensed to own an exotic animal. The nonprofit stated that it regularly holds safety trainings including one just last weekend. It plans to extensively review its protocols this week. "The process of caring for these animals doesn't leave any space for error," added Brink. On Tuesday evening, a spokesperson for the nonprofit called to say that the facility remains open. ABC10 News had previously reported that it would remain closed until at least Saturday, after Brink stated that in an interview with ABC10 News earlier on Tuesday. 1752

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After five days of crews battling flames, the USS Bonhomme Richard ship fire is extinguished. The day after the flames subsided, Navy Admiral Mike Gilday came to San Diego to see the damage for himself and meet the sailors and crews who had battled the fire.“The main takeaway for me this morning was really the people, and we outta be proud of them, and the parents of these sailors outta be proud of them,” said Gilday.Related: Navy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are outHe said he met with about 150 people Friday morning to hear their stories of what it was like to fight the fire from the inside. Crews battled temperatures that hit 1000 degrees, even getting as hot as 1200 degrees at one point. He spoke specifically about meeting one petty officer who told him her training on how to fight a fire from the beginning is what prepared her for the battle this past week.“That training set the foundation for the way she operated and behaved and acted over the past several days. She was very proud of what she did and the teamwork that was involved,” he said.He added that two of the factors that made it difficult to put out the fire were the high winds and the explosions.“This fire probably couldn’t have been at a worse point on this ship in terms of its source that allowed it to spread up elevator shafts as an example, up exhaust stacks,” he said, adding that “there were times when he had to back those firefighters off the ship. At one point the explosion was so great that it blew the debris across the pier and onto the ship that was across the way.”The Admiral also talked about what’s next for the ship. He said the next steps are doing a safety investigation, a criminal investigation (which he added is typical), a command investigation to look at the procedures in place and what crews did right or wrong, and finally an assessment of the structural, mechanical and electrical damage, which will be done with the help of the people who built and know the ship. The Navy has not decided if the USS Bonhomme Richard will be recovered.“I am 100% confident that our defense industry can put this ship back to sea, but the question is should we make that investment in a 22-year-old ship,” said the Admiral.A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed that the flames have all been extinguished, but crews continue to watch for hot spots popping up. 2411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After a deadly house fire in Logan Heights, 10News spoke with a retired fire captain on fire safety checks that can protect you and your family.Bob Lyon is a retired fire captain and knows the tragedy that can come with burglar bars in the Logan Heights neighborhood, "something that they're using for protecting their lives, ends up being something that costs them their lives."A Fire Code adopted in the late 1990's requires bars have a safety latch. "You put your foot on it, and it releases the bars because there's a little spacer in it and it will pop them, and the bars are supposed to swing open," Lyon said.RELATED: One dead, five injured in Logan Heights house fireMany homes still have old bars, or those with the safety mechanism can rust, locking them in place. "Rarely do people maintain those, just because they're something out of sight, out of mind," Lyon said solemnly.Neighbor Miguel Hernandez a few doors down from the deadly Sunday morning fire told 10News in Spanish he checks his home's bars often to ensure the security of his family. He added he checks the smoke alarms as well, changing the batteries the recommended 6-months or each year.Lyon said one more thing you can do is "sleeping with your bedroom doors closed because that helps compartmentalize and keeps the fire out of your room, gives you more time to get out."It also gives firefighters more time to get to you.Lyon said firefighters learn how to break through burglar bars in the academy, but it takes precious time. 1534

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism. It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. Send medics!" a San Diego Police Lieutenant said over the police scanner.San Diego Police K9 handler, Jonathan Wiese, noticed that this incident was just around the corner to where he was.RELATED:Officer rescues toddlers after father drives off Sunset CliffsPolice: Man drives off Sunset Cliffs with twin daughters in truckOn the morning of June 13, 2020, a suicidal man had driven through a guard rail at Sunset Cliffs. His truck plunged into the ocean. Inside were his twin 2-year-old daughters."We didn't even come up with a plan. I just pretty much said 'I'm going,'" Wiese remembered. He rappelled down a 30-foot drop, MacGyvering a rescue rope with his 100-foot dog leash. He says adrenaline, police training, but mostly his father-instinct kicked in."I had a two-year-old daughter at home, so when I'm looking in the water, it's her who is floating in the water," Wiese said. "So now it's just, 'OK, you're getting down this cliff!'"RELATED: San Diego officer honored for heroic acts in Poway synagogue shootingThe husband and father of two swam to the crash site and hoisted the girls to safety. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He says it is a day he will always remember."I am most grateful this year, knowing that those two little girls have a second chance at life," Wiese said.Another unforgettable day for Wiese is April 27, 2019. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" Wiese said. 2399

ernando Herrera Jr. and his company Fersho's HVAC and Home Renovations. "He said it would take within a month to do everything,” Petrou said.Petrou said after he signed the contract the crew got down to business ripping out siding, windows and doors.About three weeks into the job, Petrou said he started to notice major flaws in the fixes. For example, Petrou claims Herrera purchased the wrong type of windows for the house and none were installed correctly."The height of the window sills are different,” he explained.Petrou said when he confronted Herrera his crew cleaned up some of the mess they’d made and took off. The job was nowhere close to being competed. That was after he says he paid Herrera more than ,000. Petrou sent Team 10 an email correspondence he had with Herrera where he demanded his money back. The email chain shows Herrera responded saying in part, “You know what, you can have the local news do your story, I won’t file any lawsuits. It won’t affect me at all. I have decided not to go back to San Diego and make a living with my family somewhere else. Life in the US, especially in California is too expensive nowadays that we decided to try our luck overseas. I tried many times to work things out. Your house would have been done by now. But you just wouldn’t want to work with me. So this John, this whole thing IS ON YOU!! [sic]”Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin called Herrera multiple times but hasn’t received any response. Team 10 did track down the address on Petrou’s work contract to Herrera’s uncle’s house in south San Diego. His uncle said there is no business operating out of that house and he did not give his nephew permission to use his address. He did provide a phone number for Herrera's dad. Team 10 called that number, but no one called us back. No License With the StateThere’s no Fernando Herrera Jr. in the San Diego area listed as a licensed contractor. Also, a quick search through state records shows there also is no Fersho's HVAC and Home Renovations listed as a licensed business. There's no license number on the contract and renovations was spelled incorrectly on the contract provided to Petrou."He told me he was licensed, his dad was licensed,” Petrou said.Petrou filed a small claims action against Herrera and his uncle.Court records show a trial in small claims court is set for October. The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) confirmed to 10News it received a complaint and the investigation is ongoing.A spokesperson for the CSLB said there are ways consumers can be proactive to avoid problems with suspected unlicensed contractors.Petrou filed a small claims action against Herrera and his uncle.Court records show a trial in small claims court is set for October.Perform an “Instant License Check” on our website. http://www.cslb.ca.gov/OnlineServices/CheckLicenseII/CheckLicense.aspx [cslb.ca.gov] You can search by license number, business or personnel name, Home Improvement Salesperson number, or Home Improvement Salesperson name.
