SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Qualcomm won a million decision Friday against Apple in a patent infringement case involving iPhones. A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California found the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, and X infringed Qualcomm’s patents. One of the patents enables "flashless booting”, eliminating the need for separate flash memory. It also allows a smartphone to connect to the internet quickly after being powered on, according to Qualcomm officials. The other two patents allow smartphone apps to access internet data quickly, and enable high performance and graphics while increasing battery life, Qualcomm said in a news release. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say possible human remains were discovered in a Fiesta Island fire pit early Thursday.Just after 10:30 a.m., a man on the east side of the island flagged down San Diego Lifeguards after making the grim discovery. Officers responded and sent an image to a forensic anthropologist, who confirmed the remains were possibly human.ABC 10News spoke to the man who made the discovery. Dan Conklin says he was hoping to spend the day on Fiesta Island and was planning to grill some hot dogs when he parked his van near the fire pit. Conklin says he noticed a lot of trash surrounding the pit and some extra wood, so he decided he would stay. When he started cleaning up, he says, he noticed what looked like human remains. "I kept thinking it was a joke, something to do with Halloween, it had to be a mannequin or a dummy or something that you put on your porch or something," said Conklin. Conklin says he flagged down a lifeguard in the bay who then called police. Conklin says when he arrived at the pit, it was still smoldering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SDG&E announced Fire Safe 3.0 innovations to advance wildfire safety at its headquarters in Kearny Mesa Tuesday.It's the power company's plan to use more advanced technologies to improve wildfire safety. Instead of using weather data updated every 10 minutes, they utilize data updated every 30 seconds instead. SDG&E's chief meteorologist explained they're using artificial intelligence-based models that make weather data more accurate and they're monitoring more than 500,000 trees in the area using a "Vegetation Risk Index."It helps determine how those trees might impact power lines or become fuel for fires. SDG&E also announced plans to open a Fire Science and Innovation Lab next year. 734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Statewide DUI arrests and fatalities saw a significant increase over Christmas weekend. A total of 47 people died in DUI-related crashes in 2018 compared to 27 deaths over the same time period in 2017. DUI arrests also saw a significant rise. More than 1,100 people were arrested for DUI in 2018 compared to 917 in 2017. In San Diego County, three people died due to DUI-related crashes, tying with 2017. DUI arrests rose slightly from 56 to 57 in 2018. The reporting period for the arrests and deaths was Friday, December 21 through Tuesday, December 25. 584

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is defending its coronavirus-related disciplinary protocols after angry parents criticized them. The family of a student tells ABC 10News that she may be suspended for an entire semester for not reporting her COVID-19 test result fast enough.Marc Peterson says that his daughter is a sophomore. He asked that ABC 10News not show her face or use her name out of fear of retribution. He says that she lives in a single room in the dorms. When she fell ill, he says that she visited the County’s testing site on-campus, which is where she reportedly tested positive. Peterson says that she waited four days to notify the housing authority, instead of doing it immediately.“She thought [that] she didn't have to because the test was done on-campus. She thought it was being reported to the school,” he told ABC 10News on Monday and added, “The documentation that she had signed for housing said that she should report results or contact with other students ‘immediately' and ‘immediately' is not defined in any of the paperwork.”He says that she self-quarantined but still got in trouble. Peterson shared a letter that he says the school sent her which outlined options of taking an academic suspension for the spring semester or taking an academic suspension for this current semester. “It means that all the work that you've done all this semester will be wiped out. You're giving up this entire semester,” he explained.He says that he’s part of a Facebook group where dozens of other SDSU parents are posting about similar disciplinary actions for, what he calls, minor offenses during a rapidly changing pandemic. “It seems like the school is very overhandedly punishing students in this environment,” he added.Peterson says that his daughter plans to fight the possibility of suspension with the school.SDSU sent the following information to ABC 10News."We cannot provide specific information relating to specific cases or students’ academic records due to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
