AVILA BEACH, Calif. — Officials say two women are lucky to be alive after a humpback whale capsized their kayak as they paddled in the ocean on Monday.The incident, which occurred near the Cal Poly Pier, was caught on video by multiple people in the area.Julie McSorley says she went out Sunday and took pictures of the whales and convinced her friend to go kayaking with her on Monday.McSorley says there were a lot of birds and fish in the area, so people had their phones at the ready. She said she and her friend could see whales off in the distance.Seconds later, one of the whales was right underneath them.While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.Video shows McSorley screamed before going underwater for about five or six seconds.Humpback whales are considered an endangered species, and marine mammal experts say they can be unpredictable and dangerous. Experts say people should keep about a football field's worth of space between themselves and the large mammals, when possible.The Port San Luis Harbor Patrol says enforcement can be difficult. Boaters can think they've left a whale plenty of space, but the mammals move quickly.The whales have been making appearances close to shore between Morro Bay and Avila Beach in recent days. AURORA, Colo. -- When Amy and Marco Becerra adopted a 3-year-old Peruvian girl last April, they had no idea what kind of ordeal it would be to get approval for her to stay in the U.S.The Aurora couple, both U.S. citizens, had been living in Peru and had been taking care of their adopted daughter Angela since she was 12 days old.After getting clearance from the Peruvian courts to adopt Angela, they began planning to come back to the U.S. But Angela's application for immigration kept getting delayed."We had been reaching out to USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Services) for over a year, asking and sometimes begging, and sometimes crying for help," Amy Becerra said. She said the people answering USCIS's 1-800 number would simply recite what was on their website, and that some of the information conflicted with information on another government agency website.Tourist VisaThe Becerras brought Angela to Colorado on a tourist visa, and continued their efforts to get Immigration officials to grant her citizenship.Earlier this month, they learned their request had been denied.It came as a shock."No one can believe that would happen to two U.S. Citizens," Amy Becerra said.The couple went public with their plight.Congressman gets involvedRepublican Colorado Congressman Mike Coffman then got involved. "What a broken immigration system that would even think about deporting a 4-year-old," Coffman said.On Thursday, Coffman held a news conference to announce that USCIS had reversed course."They said they re-opened it due to the complexities of the case," he said, adding that he believes the agency bowed to public pressure which was a result of all of Amy Becerra's hard work.The Becerras will now be able to reapply for Angela's citizenship papers.The Congressman's Communications Director Daniel Bucheli said it should be automatic since both parents are U.S. Citizens.He said Coffman offered to pay the ,040 application fee out of his own personal account."I feel very grateful," Marco Becerra said. ATLANTA -- Senator Lindsey Graham said Tuesday he has spoken with election officials in a number of battleground states about their ballot counting procedures.Georgia’s secretary of state said that U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham asked him whether he had the power to reject certain absentee ballots. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told The Washington Post he interpreted the question as a suggestion that he toss out legally cast ballots.Raffensperger said Graham asked him whether political bias might have caused election workers to accept ballots that might have been discarded for non-matching signatures. An accusation that there has been no evidence to suggest.Graham on Monday said that was “ridiculous.” He said he was trying to find out how signature verification for absentee ballots works in Georgia.Raffensperger, also a Republican, has been criticized by President Donald Trump and other fellow Republicans over his handling of the election and said he’s received death threats. He has rigorously defended the integrity of Georgia’s election results.Graham told reporters in D.C. ASHEVILLE, North Carolina (WLOS) —Police have identified their suspect after a standoff put multiple establishments near the well-known Biltmore Estate on lockdown Wednesday morning.Asheville Police say they entered a foot pursuit with Gary Adrian Church, 42, of Ronda, N.C., at approximately 9:34 a.m. local time. Church had open warrants for several robberies in Asheville, as well as Burke and Iredell Counties.The suspect fled on foot and into the woods behind the DoubleTree Hotel and TGIFriday’s in Biltmore Village.As a safety precaution, several businesses in the area, including MAHEC, DoubleTree Hotel, TGIFriday’s and the Hampton Inn were all placed on lockdown.The Asheville Police Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the area and stayed in constant communication with Church. After approximately 3 hours, the suspect was taken into custody with no further incident.No injuries were sustained by officers or the suspect.Police say rumors of an active shooter that had been circulating on social media were incorrect. 1055
