As an excessive heat warning hits Southern California, beachgoers are staying onshore, despite the high temperatures.“My wife was a little freaked out,” said local surfer Craig Neil. “She sent me a text and said she’s getting the kids out of the water.”Out of the water because of what’s lurking inside the section of the Pacific Ocean.“We had a confirmed shark sighting,” said another surfer.A 12-foot great white shark spotted just off the San Clemente Pier, something locals say is happening more often.“It seems fairly normal here,” Neil said. “There’s usually shark sightings every month or two at least.”Now a new study is showing the number of great white sharks is rising off the California coast.“The simple reason for that is we’ve done a better job of protecting them,” said Chris Lowe a professor of marine biology and the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. “We’ve done a better job managing our fisheries and believe it or not, the water has gotten cleaner over the last 40 years."Lowe and his team have spent the past several years tracking these aquatic predators, saying while they are seeing more sharks in the water, they’re not seeing more attacks.“So, that’s all good news but we just have to learn ways to be better guests in somebody else’s home,” he said.A home with a now expanding zip code with more great white sharks moving up the coast.“Now we’re starting to see them in places off Monterey, a place where we hadn’t seen them before and this is largely due to the oceans getting warmer,” Lowe said.Lowe says this change in temperature is being seen around the world, which is something he believes will cause more great white sharks to relocate to colder waters, which could disrupt the ocean’s food chain and also alter the ecosystem.“If they get moved to a location where there’s less food, they’re just not going to do very well,” he said. “In fact, their populations may start to go down or they start to feed on something they never fed on before.”Back on the beach, stranded surfers like Neil stare at closure signs waiting for lifeguards to reopen the water, saying the ocean is the shark’s turf and that we’re just guests swimming in it. 2216

AMPA, Fla. — Tampa police have charged a mother with first-degree murder after police say she drowned her daughter in the Hillsborough River, killing her.Shakayla Denson, 26, has been arrested and charged with first-degree felony murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of 4-year-old Je'Hyrah Daniels. She also faces a charge of grand theft auto.Denson made a first appearance in court on Friday morning.  A judge set no bond on the charges of murder and child abuse.Tampa Police officers responded around 4:06 p.m. local time Thursday after receiving reports of a woman who drowned a child in the river just north of the Columbus Drive bridge. The dive team also responded to the scene where they pulled Je'Hyrah from the water around 4:30 p.m. She was discovered approximately 75 feet from the shore. Emergency services rushed her to St. Joseph's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  Police say Denson was located walking nearby when they took her into custody. Investigators say Denson had just stolen a car - a grey Nissan Altima - from a nearby auto repair shop. She parked the car on Rome Avenue just north of Aileen Street. Witness AccountsAccording to an arrest affidavit released Friday morning, two witnesses said Denson "forcefully pushed Je'Hyrah into the back seat of the Nissan Altima." One of the witnesses attempted to stop Denson from leaving but was struck by the Altima as she left. Two other witnesses told police they saw Denson near Aileen St W and Rome Avenue N where she "forcefully removed Je'Hyrah from the back seat of the Altima by the arm." They said as Denson pulled Je'Hyrah she was "screaming loudly and not cooperating." Denson then went into the Hillsborough River while holding both of Je'Hyrah's arm until the water reached her shoulders.Vicki Walker lives on the 3rd floor of the Dockside Condos in Tampa, directly facing where police say Je'Hyrah was drowned.She told said that she never saw the child, but spotted a woman walking out of water not long before police arrived.“Which was very odd, I’ve lived here for years, I’ve never seen anybody in the river," she said.Walker took a photo of the woman in the river.Walker says that the woman was by herself and that she watched her walk out of the river onto the bank, where she says the woman sat for a while.“There’s a part of me that’s like ‘oh my gosh, why didn’t I run over there? Why didn’t I talk to this person? Dr. G says if schools have the secure, virtual platforms for live classroom learning, students should turn their cameras on so teachers and other students can see them.As for whether having your camera on or off during class can be appropriate depending on a child's age, Dr G says "parents are experts of their own kids and there may be individual instances where it would be valuable for a child in certain situations to leave their camera off."Dr. G says parents and teachers have a lot more to fear from kids disengaging than engaging uncomfortably. "Middle school is an uncomfortable experience for almost everyone. And I don't mean to diminish that at all but uncomfortable is not the same as unsafe. Helping our kids navigate more uncomfortable situations is often more valuable than protecting them from uncomfortable situations," said Dr. G.At Sanger Unified School District in California, administrators recommend their 12,000 students leave their cameras on when in their virtual classrooms but it's not required."The students do have somewhat of a choice to do that and we know some of our low socio-economic status students, sometimes they're just a little concerned with the background or there’s a lot going on they don't want to show. Or it could be, I don't want someone looking into my bedroom," said Tim Lopez, the Associate Superintendent of Educational Services at Sanger Unified. Lopez says the district is moving to a new virtual learning platform that will allow students to create a virtual background. He believes that and the optional cameras helps level the playing field among students while they're learning from home."There's other things like bandwidth. I've noticed even in my own meetings with adults, they're going on and off and it's like, 'Hey, turn your camera off so we can just listen to what you have to say,'" said Lopez. Whether students' cameras are on or off, both Sanger Unified and Dr. G say teachers will be prepared to ensure students are paying attention in class."I think that our teachers have learned a ton in the last six months about virtual classroom management, just like they spent a lot of time at school learning about in-person classroom management.
