SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Police officer is showing his gratitude this holiday season after an incredible display of heroism.It was at the end of his graveyard shift when he heard panic over the scanner."It's moving pretty quick, ooohh standby. It went over the… it went over the cliff. I was not in pursuit. I just pretty much said 'I'm going,'" Wiese remembered.He rappelled down a 30-foot drop, MacGyvering a rescue rope with his 100-foot dog leash. He says adrenaline, police training, but mostly his father-instinct kicked in."I had a two-year-old daughter at home, so when I'm looking in the water, it's her who is floating in the water," Wiese said. His brave actions have since been recognized many times. He says it is a day he will always remember."I am most grateful this year, knowing that those two little girls have a second chance at life," Wiese said.Another unforgettable day for Wiese is April 27, 2019. He was on his way to get lunch with his family when he heard an active shooter call on the scanner. Moments later, he spotted the suspect. Without backup, he convinced the Poway Synagogue shooter to surrender. Officer Wiese took him into custody.Wiese says his competitive spirit motivates him to be a better version of himself every day, to show resilience and strength for his community."If you feel like you're going to win, then incidents like this, like at Sunset Cliffs, 'I'm going to win this incident. I'm going to save these girls in this man.' At the synagogue, 'I'm going to win. I'm going to go home to my family, and he is going to go to jail. and the community is going to be safe.'" Here he also fell in love with his wife Dana, who was a customer at his coffee shop."His smile was just captivating, he was an amazing listener, he was full of life," said Dana. "His heart kept on beating because he knew it was going to someone special," said Dana. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A search was underway Friday for eight service members who disappeared in the waters off San Clemente Island after a training exercise involving an amphibious assault vehicle (AAV).One Marine died following the training accident and two were in critical condition at a hospital.The accident is the third time in less than 10 years that someone has been injured or died in an AAV during training. Colonel with a background in intelligence and amphibious reconnaissance, says one of the most difficult operations in the military is amphibious operations."There is an inherent danger because every once in a while those things will take on water and if they do you've got a lot of marines trapped in a vehicle and it's going to be very difficult to get everyone out safely," Kempfer said.In 2017, 15 Marines were injured during a training exercise when an AAV caught fire. In 2011, a Marine was killed when an AAV sank off the coast near Camp Pendleton."It does happen, that when you go into the water things will leak. There's hatches all over the vehicle on top, in back the crew has hatches," Kempfer says.Injuries during training exercises aren't specific to amphibious assault vehicles. In 2015, one Marine was killed and 18 others were injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash.Kemper says they are horrific events when they happen."We train like we fight an obviously like its very nature the armed forces is a very dangerous business that's what we do," said Kemper. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After months without any organized sports or youth activities, the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program resumed Monday under strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.For Addison Watson, it was a day she thought would never come. On Monday, she joined hundreds of other kids to take part in the San Diego Junior Lifeguard program.“I’ve been sitting in my room on a desk with my computer, staring at a screen. This is nice to be outside,” Addison said.When the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down, there was a concern there wouldn’t be a program this summer.However, organizers pressed on and prepared just in case. Once the green light was given by San Diego County health officials, they had everything up and running.The program opened up with health measures in place, including having families do health screenings at home. Additionally, each participant and the entire staff will have to go through another health and temperature screening on site each day.Participants and staff are also required to wear masks and will have to follow social distancing guidelines. To help with distancing, the program will be spread out at more locations.The participants will also be broken up into smaller groups -- unlike before, they will stay within this group to keep the interaction to fewer people.Heather Rabe, program manager for the San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program, said, “We're following an operational safety protocol plan that we've been developing and working on and adjusting as new guidelines have come out for the last two months.”10News was also told other agencies within the state and outside of California will use this similar model when it comes to their aquatic programs. 1735

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid sky high gas prices and commuting headaches, more San Diego commuters are turning to telecommuting.Like many, Maria Parra's day at work begins with a cup of coffee.  The difference is her coffee is brewed in the kitchen at her City Heights home, feet away from her office.  Parra, who does coding for Sharp Health, started telecommuting in 2010."It only took me about a week to realize how great a situation it was," said Parra.RELATED: How to convince your employer to allow you to telecommuteParra says she saves thousands every year in commuting costs, from gas to wear and tear on her car.   Gone are those rush hour headaches."The time you are saving and the stress you are alleviating is great," said Parra.According to SANDAG, the average San Diegan spends the equivalent of 22 work days every year commuting to work. For full-time telecommuters, that's like getting back 22 vacation days.  Those benefits are now fueling a local telecommuting boom.  According to just released numbers from Carlsbad-based Global Workplace Analytics, about 65,000 San Diegans now work at least half their hours from home.  That's up nearly 190% in the past decade.  Nationally, that increase is 140%.Kate Lister is president of Global Workplace Analytics, which develops flexible workplace strategies for employers.  She says more and more employers are taking a close look at telecommuting."Employers can save big money in terms of productivity, lower turnover, lower absenteeism, and of course, real estate savings.  They don't have to have a seat for every one," said Lister.Among those employers is Sharp Health, boasting more than 670 employees in its telecommuting program, a 16.5% increase from the year before.RELATED: Longer drive could save San Diegans on housingLister says in all, 4.6% of the San Diego workplace telecommutes, which ranks among the top 10 cities in the U.S.  1964
