SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A similar Observation Wheel to those in England and Paris could come to Balboa Park for a short term stay.The Cohn Restaurant Group and Sky Views of America presented the idea of the Balboa Park Star to the Balboa Park Committee Meeting on October 1.They hope the wheel would attract more visitors and re-energize the park."We have operated these observation wheels during the pandemic," Vice President of Sky Views of America Ben Pickett said.The gondolas are enclosed and climate controlled. According to the presentation, they are sanitized after each ride and safety protocols comply with state, local and CDC guidelines. Masks would be required for passengers and staff. The presentation was met with excitement by the committee."I love the fact it is innovative and outside the box," Committee Member Victoria Curran said. "This is a terrific idea, I love it!" Committee Member Johanna Schiavoni added."Sometimes it's the craziest ideas that are the best ones," Committee Member Micah Parzen said. He cautioned there were concerns that needed to be worked out, like where and how much room the wheel would take up, if the wheel would take income away from competing museums and the juxtaposition of historic versus modern aesthetics.Pickett said they are working on promotions with the museums as well as discounts for families and military members.David Cohn compared the Balboa Park Star to the London Eye, La Grande Roue in Paris, or the Belfast Eye in Ireland.Most visitors at Balboa Park who spoke with ABC 10News like the idea."I think it would be super super cool, I would totally ride it," Visitor Erin Medina from Reno said excitedly."At first I thought, huh, seems more like a carnival than beautiful historic Balboa Park, but as you mentioned the Ferris wheel came here in 1915, so it might be kind of cool to bring it back, especially during the pandemic," San Diegan Clare Siragusa said.The R-50 is a modern wheel with gondolas that can seat eight people. The cost is estimated - per rider and tickets would be sold online and at the attraction.The proposed location is in the Plaza de Panama, near the Museum of Art."Anything that's for the kids, anything that's kind of easy, accessible entertainment, I support," San Diegan Samantha Pearson said.Entertainment at 148 feet in the air, just 52 feet short of the California Tower.The next presentation will be for the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Board October 28. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A strong series of earthquakes struck Baja California Monday morning, but was felt throughout San Diego, according to United States Geological Survey data.The first tremor,was reported at 8:09 a.m. and was centered in San Vicente, Mexico -- about 93 miles south of San Diego, according to the USGS. The quake registered 4.4-magnitude.The jolt was followed by two more in quick succession at 8:30 a.m. and 8:31 a.m., both registering 5.2- and 5.1-magnitude respectively, USGS reported.No known injuries or damage have been reported.Various people reported feeling the quake all over Southern California, including numerous locations in San Diego, some as far north as Escondido and east in El Centro. 727

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A young woman was hit by an egg while walking to her car in Carmel Valley and could lose sight in her left eye permanently due to the prank, according to what her doctor told her.Meghan Campbell, 25, was visiting friends on Sunday the 19th, at their home near Torrey Pines High School. Around 9:45 p.m. she was walking ahead of her friends to her car when a dark SUV drove by and someone inside hurled an egg at her."It was freaking terrifying," she said Wednesday, still shaken by the incident. "Soon as it hit me I kneeled down to figure out what was going on." Her thoughts were racing, "I can't see, there's something gooey on my face right now."It can sound like a funny prank, and Campbell chooses to find the humor in it now, but what doctors told her at the hospital was life-altering.She said doctors told her that her left cornea was scratched and orbital bones were fractured."I think the most scary thing for me was my vision went out... and I couldn't start seeing light or anything until the next day," Campbell said.She saw an Ophthalmologist Tuesday and she said he told her it will take six weeks to find out if her vision will come back. He said there are no options for surgery or medication because of the level of trauma to her eye. Her left pupil has remained dilated more than a week after the incident.She said she's still having trouble with light sensitivity, depth perception, and overall vision. "Someone with 20/20 vision can stand 200 feet away from something and see it clear, I have to stand 20 feet away to see the same thing," she said.She was visiting her friends from Orange County when the incident happened. Wednesday she was at the airport waiting for a flight back to Kentucky where she's studying to become an ER doctor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - According to the San Diego Association of Governments, the unemployment rate in San Diego County was just under 16% at the end of June. The good news is that number is down from the 25% unemployment in May. Still, more than 250,000 San Diegans are unemployed, and many are hurting financially. However, ABC 10News did discover a select group that plans for unforeseen events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and they seem to be doing just fine. What's their secret? FIRE.FIRE stands for Financial Independence Retire Early. We profiled this group back in November. Last fall, we met Jennifer Mah, a money coach and Community Manager for the San Diego FIRE chapter called Choose-FI before screening a documentary on the subject. And we learned then that many in the Financial Independence community save an average of 40% of their income. So we wanted to know, how are they doing now in the middle of this financial meltdown?"This is the first time in an economic downturn or instability that I've ever had a sense of strength," says Mah over a recent Zoom interview.And Jennifer's not alone. She introduced us to two couples with diverse stories."As soon as quarantine started and I was laid off, that was super scary for me," adds Grace Damazo.But not as scary for Grace and Mike Damazo had they not been part of the Choose-FI community. The Damazo's are a self-described frugal couple in their 30's. Yes, they save more money than many of their peers, but they're also investing in real estate. And before the pandemic hit, they sold one of their cars to cut back on expenses. Mike's position in the Navy is, of course, considered essential. But Grace, a fitness instructor, was laid off at a big box gym and immediately transitioned her clients online. The pandemic only has them doubling down on saving."It was a realization that this was the right path, at least for us, and we need to fast track it," adds Grace.And then there is Wendy and Curtis Mays. A couple in their 50's, with six kids. If you think 50 is too late to start saving, think again. The Mays claim they were in a million-dollar hole just three years ago, and then they found Choose-FI."It's been a long time of having that fear in the back of our minds, and to not have it anymore is just incredible," says a relieved Wendy Mays.Wendy and Curtis sold their house and started renting because they could save more money and pay down debt. Family outings are free when possible, like a trip to the beach. They've paid down so much debt; Wendy was able to quit her full-time job and co-host her own financial consulting business. Curtis says the key is moving past the stigma of debt, talking with others, and figuring out what works best."They're able to do it, and we're able to do it, we just put it in our form with our platform, with our background, with our kids," adds Curtis Mays.Both couples were on what they call a 50-50 plan. 50% of their income goes straight to savings, and 50% to pay down debt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Amazon delivery driver was caught on video tossing a package onto a driveway like it was a newspaper, and the customer is not happy about it. “I order books. I’ve ordered Echos. I’ve ordered cameras on Amazon,” Del Cerro resident Yung Jun Kim said. He was worried someone might, one day, steal a package.“I ordered the ring camera to monitor the delivery,” Kim said “The first time the Amazon delivery happened on-camera, the driver drove into the driveway, didn’t even get out of his car, rolled down his window and threw my package onto the driveway."Kim found the package on the porch when he got home. What happened was also caught on video.“It was really great, because my mailman came by about 15 minutes later and he picked it up from the driveway and left it on my doorstep,” Kim said.Kim thinks the Amazon deliver driver threw his neighbor's package as well.“The video showed him pulling into her driveway for about 10 seconds and pulling back out. So, in that time, I don’t think he got out of a car and went into her courtyard and delivered it that way," Kim said. "He probably just threw it on the driveway."This time, Kim’s package was not fragile - but the driver didn't know that. Kim emailed Amazon and complained.“Customer service responded that same day, and they gave me a long apology and said they were going to look into it, which, I don’t know if they did," he said. "They also gave me a credit for my troubles."Kim says he hopes Amazon will get better drivers, because based on the video - they've got at least one with a negative attitude. "It takes very little effort to get out of the car to make a delivery onto a porch," Kim said. 10News reached out to Amazon.
