ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- Video from a witness shows a driver slamming into a crowd outside an Encinitas bar early Sunday morning. In the video, a U-Haul van can be seen accelerating onto a sidewalk. Video shows pedestrians leaping out of the way before the vehicle crashes into the crowd. In a Monday news release, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said one person is in an intensive care unit while another is undergoing surgery with serious injuries following the crash. The department says a 24-year-old victim is in an intensive care unit while a 25-year-old is in surgery with serious injuries. All three of the victims were struck when the suspect, Christian Davis, 28, reportedly drove the van onto a sidewalk outside The Saloon Bar around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Two others received minor injuries when they detained Davis outside the bar. Deputies say Davis was asked to leave the bar because he was too intoxicated. After complying with the request, deputies say Davis got into the van, intentionally driving it onto the sidewalk. Davis was later arrested and is being charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista on March 3. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Construction is underway on bike and pedestrian improvement projects in North San Diego County.Paths will be built beneath the Interstate 5 overpasses at Santa Fe Drive and Encinitas Blvd.The work, which will cost .5 million, should be finished in late summer 2019.During construction, drivers can expect traffic delays. There will also be periodic noise and lights.“Construction activities have been designed to reduce impacts to anyone using these intersections,” said Caltrans Project Manager Arturo Jacobo. “While there will be narrowed lanes, we do not anticipate any lane closures during construction. Additionally, we are installing a temporary protected path for pedestrians and people on bikes, which now only exists along westbound Santa Fe Drive.”The projects are part of the North Coast Corridor Program, which will eventually add carpool lanes to I-5, double track the coastal rail corridor, provide walking and biking trails, and complete environmental restoration. 1017

Just ask a family in Fallbrook that’s created a new card game they call, "It's Contagious," featuring a not-so-serious side of dealing with the virus while allowing players to work through their anxiety."Folks will find that the artwork on the cards is really relatable," said mom, Lola Pickett. "And also just like a fun take on this very challenging situation that we’re all in."For Lola, her husband, Tigre, and their two children, the pandemic came very close to home in March when the kids' Grandfather, Rich Pickett, tested positive for COVID-19."His case ended up becoming quite severe, putting him into the ICU," Lola said.Lola says while her father-in-law was in the hospital and the family was quarantined. They coped while at home by spending time together and playing games together. But the stress of the pandemic and its very personal impact was never far off."We noticed our kids were processing things by like adding hand washing stations to their Lego builds," said Lola. "We thought, that’s how we do things as humans. We play through it and figure out how we’re feeling."With that in mind, a project was launched.Dad, Tigre Pickett, says the family found some old poker cards, "Lola took a Sharpie and whiteout and started marking them up. We were like what if we had this card that did this?"Virus cards, spreaders, and antibodies. The headlines and stories of 2020 were becoming the cards of “It’s Contagious!” Like the café in Germany that required patrons to wear pool noodle hats for social distancing."We thought, well, there’s a card. That’s hilarious," said Lola as she and her husband showed off various cards. "So, we have things like that. We have home haircut. We have the t-p shortage which we’re going through again." "Like Zoom birthday parties," Tigre pipes in, as Lola continues, "And then things like antibodies become superheroes. They become a superpower card in the deck just like they do in real life."And the game itself becoming a part of real-life as the Picketts have invested in professional artwork and production in the hope that “It’s contagious,” catches on."We found that play is one of the fastest ways for processing," said Tigre. ENCINITAS (CNS) - Construction crews will begin a three-week closure of a section of Chesterfield Drive Wednesday to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety, according to the San Diego Association of Governments. Chesterfield Drive will be closed to drivers in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Coast Highway 101 and San Elijo Avenue. According to SANDAG, the closure will extend through Jan. 23 to complete a new bikeway and pedestrian path, an Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk and ramps, new traffic signals and new rail crossing equipment such as signals and gates. During the closure, northbound motorists will be detoured to D Street and southbound motorists will be detoured to Lomas Santa Fe Drive. The intersection will remain open to pedestrians and bicyclists during the closure but will be closed to motorists 24 hours per day, seven days a week. According to SANDAG, roughly 17,000 drivers use the intersection each day. The closure is the second phase of improvements to the Chesterfield Drive rail crossing and part of San Diego County's Build NCC (North Coast Corridor) project, a 40-year, 0 million effort to repair and expand vehicle and rail transportation infrastructure around the county.
