President Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he will sign an emergency declaration for the state of Iowa following a derecho that blasted the state last week.At its peak, the storm packed winds of 112 MPH, and caused devastation in widespread areas.“I just approved an emergency declaration for Iowa, who had an incredible wind storm like probably they’ve never seen before. It really did a lot of damage,” Trump said. “So I’ve informed the governor; I’ve informed Senator Grassley and Senator Joni Ernst. So I’ve approved the declaration — emergency declaration for Iowa.”Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said that 8,273 homes were destroyed or suffered major damage. Reynolds requested billion in federal assistance following the storms.“From cities to farms, Iowans are hurting, many still have challenges with shelter, food, and power. Resilience is in our DNA, but we’re going to need a strong and timely federal response to support recovery efforts,” said Gov. Reynolds. “I have formally requested an expedited Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to secure this critical federal assistance as quickly as possible. This past week I had conversations with President Trump and Vice President Pence, both have pledged the full support of the federal government. I am very grateful for their continued partnership and commitment during this disaster.”One person died from the storm, according to the National Weather Service. (KGTV) -- Take away the masks, temperature readings, and distance markers, and Canyon View Elementary in Poway looked like any other first day of school Thursday morning.Asked if they have been waiting for this day, one parent told ABC 10News, “Yes, for so long.”The Poway Unified School District kicked off their hybrid program consists of both in-person and digital learning for kids in grades K-5.Students will be in class for a maximum of 2.5 hours per day, and while It's a short day, parents like Chris Madrideo said it's enough."The two hours is perfect, [better] than nothing because at home it's been hard,” Madirdeo said.To ensure social distancing, half the amount of kids returning will be part of the morning session, the other half will take part in the afternoon session."We had a lot of parent meetings, I sent videos about what it's going to look like. We've had families do test runs so we're ready and we'll make adjustments as needed," said Canyon View Elementary Principal Jill Halsey. "We looked at what's working, and we want to take what's working and implement it here.”Desks inside classroom will be covered with plexiglass and six feet apart.The district’s communication director said if a student or staff contracts COVID-19 while involved in in-person learning, they'll be required to switch back to distance learning immediately. The school will then work with the health department to contact trace, notify and test, if needed, anyone affected.Families were also given the option to continue virtual learning. (KGTV) — A Poway High School student has been arrested for allegedly making threats to shoot classmates.Friday, the parent of a Poway High student reported several threats were made by another student, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.The student, who was not named, was in an argument with a group of students and threatened to bring a gun to school and shoot the students, SDSO said.Deputies responded to the student's home but did not find a firearm at the home.The student was taken to Juvenile Hall and charged with making criminal threats.SDSO reminds parents and students that deputies investigate all schools threats and encourages them to report any perceived threats to authorities. 754

LUCIE, Fla. - The tourism industry is looking to bounce back after a tough spring and summer.One resort on the Treasure Coast is trying to appeal to people who want to mix business and pleasure with school.Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, located along the St. Lucie River, is one of the few resorts in the country that offers all-inclusive packages.Now, they are starting new programs that have places for parents and children to get their work and school assignments completed.With many families now working and learning from home, Club Med wants area residents to consider a getaway without abandoning your responsibilities. WPTV Sophia Lykke, the general manager at ClubMed Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie, says the resort is working to attract families who can continue to work and attend online school. "We're open to anyone in the United States who want to make their way down to Florida," said general manager Sophia Lykke.She said they have set up two conference rooms that include one for kids to do their schoolwork.“We would have one of our mini club staff dedicated to chaperoning them. [They do ] not act as teachers but make sure they’re logged on [their computer] on time and doing their work," Lykke said. "We have a separate room for adults, which is basically like a working lounge where you can have coffee, snacks. If you need IT support, we have someone who can do it. POWAY, Calif (KGTV) -- The Poway Unified School District doesn’t plan to return to in-person learning following winter break, officials announced Tuesday.According to a letter sent to families, the district plans to suspend in-person learning for all students and schools for two weeks, from January 4 through the 15.During that time, district officials say all students will learn from home. “On-campus learning will resume Tuesday, January 19, 2021,” the district said.The district still awaits approval from the board at a Thursday meeting where the move could be solidified.Read the full letter to families below: 625
