SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a 6-3 vote, the San Diego City Council today rejected a proposed .5 million sale of the property holding the city's only roller skating rink, Skateworld.The proposal called for the city to sell the parcel of land to big-box store developer Pacifica Companies, much to the chagrin of Skateworld supporters who called on the council to either collect more community feedback before approving the sale or reject it outright in favor of renovating the rink.Skateworld advocates collected thousands of signatures in an effort to save the skating rink, including a change.org petition that garnered more than 19,000 supporters. "I really appreciate that residents of every council district came to speak today about the community that Skateworld fosters,'' said City Councilwoman Barbara Bry. "I think there's so few family friendlyopportunities in that community that it's really essential.''The skating rink was developed under a state redevelopment agency more than 40 years ago. When Gov. Jerry Brown dissolved the redevelopment agencies in 2011, he ordered that their assets be liquidated to the highest bidder.The city put the property up for bid last year and named Pacifica the recommended buyer after three rounds of receiving offers for the site. Supporters of the sale, including City Councilman Scott Sherman, who represents the district Skateworld is in, argued the city's hands were tied and it should honor Pacifica's bid. "When I was looking at this, I really did say, you know, I like to give deference to my fellow council members and their district,'' City Councilwoman Monica Montgomery said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accosted a woman in the Fairmount Village neighborhood early Sunday and took off with her 2003 Toyota Celica, police said.He intercepted the 30-something woman in the 3800 block of 47th Street at 3:35 a.m., as she was heading to her car."The suspect pushed her to the ground and demanded her car keys," said San Diego Police Department officer Tony Martinez. "The victim complied, and the suspect fled in the victim's vehicle."Police said the vehicle's license plate is 6TQG479. The car has a rear spoiler, Martinez said.The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, about 6 feet tall with an average build. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Attempted murder, kidnapping, child abuse, child abduction, criminal threats and burglary charges have been filed against a man accused of intentionally driving a pickup truck off Sunset Cliffs and into the ocean with his twin toddler daughters inside, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office announced Friday.Robert Brians is being held without bail on suspicion of driving into the water last Saturday morning with his 2-year-old daughters inside the truck. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Former San Diego City Councilman and Reform California Chairman Carl DeMaio announced his intent Monday to enter the race for the only Republican-held congressional seat in San Diego County. In a statement announcing his candidacy for the 50th Congressional District seat, DeMaio framed the decision to run as one of ``fight or flight.'' He also lambasted the state's Democratic dominance, arguing the state has shifted to the left in an untenable way. ``Too many Californians are fleeing our state because of the extreme socialist agenda being imposed on us by Democrat politicians, but I refuse to flee: I choose to stand and fight,'' DeMaio said. ``In California, voters have mostly only been given two choices: socialists or ineffective cowards.'' The 50th District seat is currently represented by Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, who was indicted last August, along with his wife, on five dozen criminal charges, including conspiracy, wire fraud and record falsification, for allegedly misusing campaign funds. Margaret Hunter has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy and is cooperating with prosecutors. Her husband maintains his innocence. Hunter won a sixth term last November, defeating Democratic candidate Ammar Campa-Najjar with 51.7% of the vote. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con who opened fire in the Gaslamp District two years ago, wounding an off-duty sheriff's deputy and a bystander, was sentenced Wednesday to 71 years to life in state prison.Ray Pitoau, 39, was convicted last month of two counts of assault with a firearm for the Aug. 7, 2017, shooting that injured Deputy Jason Philpot, who was walking through downtown with his two brothers following a Metallica concert at Petco Park. Also injured was bystander Vladimir Shvets, a passerby in San Diego for a convention.Pitoau was also convicted of a lesser charge of assault on the deputy's younger sibling, Joshua.Prosecutors said Philpot and his group walked past Pitoau, who got into an argument with the deputy's sibling on Island Avenue near Sixth Avenue just after 1 a.m.RELATED: Man convicted of assault with gun in Gaslamp shooting that wounded deputyPitoau testified that he pulled out a gun in self-defense because a group of men, including Jason Philpot, were advancing on him.
