The maker of the video game Fortnite is being sued by two parents in Canada who claim the game is as addictive as cocaine. The parents are claiming software development company Epic Games used psychologists to design "the most addictive game possible."Fortnite is one of the most popular games among kids. Eight-year-old Rayline Brassert and her friends are hooked“People always brag about Fortnite,” said Rayline. “Like when they always come to school and brag about it.”Rayline’s mother says it can be a challenge to get her daughter to stop playing. “There’s like this switch that goes off and if she’s not allowed to do something and she’s a completely different person and you gotta pull her back to reality,” said Natalie Brassert.Fifteen-year-old Gavin Probst says he plays Fortnite nearly every day and admits he can spend a little too much time in front of the screen. “It’s real easy to lose time. I’ve personally gone overboard many times,” said Gavin. His mother, Christine, also notices a change in her son when he starts playing the game. “You can just sort of tell their attitudes get a little bit more short, they can be a little bit more cranky,” said Christine. Dr. Russell Schilling with the American Psychological Association has worked with game developers but wasn’t involved with Fortnite. “They’re creative people and whether psychologists are involved or not, what they’re trying to do is make the game as engaging as possible,” said Dr. Schilling. “They want you to play it, they wouldn’t make money if they weren’t.”Schilling feels there’s not enough research to show video games are addictive, even though the World Health Organization made video game addiction an official mental health disorder.“Many things can become addictive,” said Schilling. “There are many factors for why that may happen but there may not be anything specifically about video games that’s unique – we just don’t know at this point.”As for the lawsuit, Epic Games won’t comment on pending litigation but Fortnite has nearly 250 million users worldwide. 2067

The Boy Scouts of America urged victims to come forward Tuesday as the historic, 110-year-old organization filed for bankruptcy protection in the first step toward creating a huge compensation fund for potentially thousands of men who were molested as youngsters decades ago by scoutmasters or other leaders.The Scouts resorted to Chapter 11 in hopes of surviving a barrage of lawsuits, many of them made possible by recent changes in state laws to allow people to sue over long-ago sexual abuse.Bankruptcy will enable the organization to put those cases on hold for now and continue operating. But ultimately the Boy Scouts could be forced to sell some of their vast property holdings, including campgrounds and hiking trails, to raise money for a victims’ fund that could top billion.The Boy Scouts estimated 1,000 to 5,000 victims will seek compensation.“The BSA encourages victims to come forward to file a claim as the bankruptcy process moves forward,” the organization said in a statement.James Kretschmer of Houston, one of those suing, said he was molested by a Scout leader in the mid-1970s in the Spokane, Washington, area. The man behind the American pastime of paint-by-numbers pictures died on April 1 at the age of 93, according to his son. Dan Robbins created the first pictures and helped popularize paint-by-numbers kits in the 1950s.Robbins' son, Larry, said his dad was working as a package designer for the Palmer Paint Company in Detroit when he came up with the idea for paint-by-numbers in the late 1940s. He worked there as a graphic artist and sold children's paint that was washable.The idea for paint-by-numbers started when Robbins' boss asked him to come up with an item that could be geared towards adults. Robbins got inspiration for the product from Leonardo da Vinci. The famous artist would hand out numbered designs to apprentices. Robbins took that concept and evolved it into paint-by-numbers.Robbins' work had a significant impact on the pop culture of the 1950s and '60s, since post-World War II Americans found themselves with leisure time to pursue hobbies and activities such as painting."Dad was a very, very modest person. He would never bring up his career. If someone asked him, he'd explain," Larry Robbins said. "Dad was into the accomplishment of providing ... for people like me who can't draw a stick man, to be able to paint and the experiencing of creating a nice piece of art work."Before computers were involved, the artists creating the pictures had to paint the image and then use a piece of acetate or clear plastic over the original to create the areas for each number. Beginner kits started with 20 colors and the number of colors increased with the level of difficulty.Robbins' son said that his father didn't get rich from his invention. Dan Robbins didn't own the company, and eventually his product's parent company, Craft Master, was bought by General Mills.Robbins ended up in the Chicago area and did his own consulting work. He did art work, packaging, and new product development until he retired in the 1980s, according to his son.His work is still on display in the Detroit Historical Museum, along with works from the likes of Henry Ford.Dan Robbins died in Toledo, Ohio, after contracting pneumonia following a series of falls, according to his son.
