SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Uber is utilizing selfie technology to make sure both its drivers and passengers wear face masks to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The ride-sharing company has been requiring drivers and riders to wear masks since May, but only required drivers to use its technology to verify their face coverings.“Before starting to drive passengers or deliver food, they are asked to take a selfie showing their mouth and nose are covered,” Uber wrote in a press release. Now, the requirement is being expanded to passengers as well. If a driver reports that a rider isn’t wearing a mask, the rider will be required to take a selfie with their face covered before they’re able to take another trip with Uber.“With the addition of this new feature, one driver’s feedback can help ensure the safety of Uber for the next driver,” said Uber. The mask verification feature will roll out to the U.S. and Canada by the end of September, and across Latin America and other countries after that.Uber assured that the mask verification tool detects the mask as an object in the photo and does not process biometric information.“As always, riders and drivers are free to cancel a trip, without penalty, if the other person isn’t wearing a mask,” Uber wrote. “As more and more riders and drivers take their ‘second first trip,’ we hope this increased accountability provides more peace of mind.”The additional safety measures are part of Uber's efforts to rebuild a service that has seen ridership plunge by 56% in the company's most recent quarter, The Associated Press reports. 1595

Scalding, black lava crept out of the largest fissure ripped open by Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano, consuming the lush, green landscape around it and lobbing balls of magma known as "spatter bombs" 500 feet into the air, according to footage and reports from the US Geological Survey.Fissure No. 17 split the Earth near Leilani Estates, near the eastern point of Hawaii's Big Island, and the USGS published footage of the lava running like a river -- and then a lake -- past three structures in the area. While authorities reported an 18th fissure opening Sunday, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory walked that back, saying the latest crack in the Earth -- near Halekamahina Loop Road -- was actually part of Fissure 17. On Monday morning, Fissure 18 officially opened, according to the USGS. 797

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection paid a staffing consultant million that has so far yielded two rank-and-file employees, a new federal watchdog report says. The Office of Inspector General says CBP signed a nearly 0 million contract with Accenture in November 2017, meant to hire 7,500 new workers across departments. But a year later, Accenture has hired two workers. “Accenture is nowhere near satisfying its 7,500-person hiring goal over the next five years,” the report says. “Further, CBP has used significant staffing and resources to help Accenture do the job for which it was contracted.”Accenture said in a statement it remains focused on fulfilling CBP’s exceptions. A CBP spokesperson says the agency takes issue with some of the reports findings, but acknowledged the contract has been a challenge. CBP says the .6 million to Accenture has gone to creating a hiring structure, an applicant care center, marketing and conducting various steps in the hiring process.“CBP is constantly working to strengthen its hiring capabilities to ensure staffing for critical frontline operations, while maintaining our high personnel standards,” the CBP said in a statement. The lack of workers is being felt along the San Ysidro border, where wait times can be upwards of two hours, and not every booth is staffed by an agent.“Anytime you have people waiting in line instead of working, instead of shopping, instead of going to restaurants, you’re losing money,” said Cindy Gompper-Graves, head of the South County Economic Development Council, who described the report as a bit troubling. 1634
