World leaders in obesity research are optimistic about new guidelines out of Canada, which take a more holistic approach to diagnosing and treating obesity.One critical point is for doctors to stop relying on a person's body mass index alone for diagnosis.“Body mass index tells me how big you are. It doesn't tell me how sick you are,” said Dr. Arya Sharma, Scientific Director of Obesity Canada. “So, you can have two people with the exact same BMI numbers, two people, they are both 35, one person has sleep apnea, diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver disease, infertility whatever, and the next person with that body mass index has none of those problems.”Sharma says under these new guidelines, they are concerned that more people could be classified as obese. A person might fall under the BMI number for obesity but still have weight-related health issues.Currently, about 30% of Canadians are obese. In the United States, it’s about 42%.The head of the U.S. National Center for Weight and Wellness applauds the new approach.“That very well may be lead to a seminal shift in how the general medical population addresses obesity and for that, I think they really deserve a lot of credit,” said Dr. Scott Kahan, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness.Another critical issue the new guidelines address is weight bias among health professionals and people living with obesity.“Patients also tend to blame themselves, so they have an internalized weight bias, so the patients also think, ‘so this is my fault and I’ve done this to myself,’” said Sharma.Doctors say your body fights back against weight loss biologically, which is why Sharma says obesity is a chronic disease for which there is no cure but can be managed. And today, there are more proven treatments than ever, not diets.“The only reason why medication and surgery have much better long-term results is because they actually change the biology in the sense to make it much harder for the body to defend its weight,” said Sharma.Obesity is a complex disease that can be caused by genetics, psychological or environmental factors among others. 2133

But try telling that to Marie Dellafranca, vice president of South Shore Villas Condominium Association at West Babylon, Long Island.On May 20, she sent a warning letter to condo owners Robert and Angelica Parker. Their 4-year-old son Liam loves riding his tricycle and scooter around the grassy triangle in front of their unit."We understand that the weather has gotten nice out but unfortunately, there are rules and regulations in the By-laws," the letter read. "That it is not safe for kids to play on common area grounds. Please take this as a precaution measure so that we would not have to enforce the fine that is association with this. It is 0 per violation."The Parkers looked through 38 pages of the association's by-laws, but didn't see any prohibiting kids from playing outside. They asked Dellafranca to show it to them. She couldn't.Dellafranca later said they received complaints from one condo owner about the children of three families playing outside in a "noisy fashion." The Parkers said the two other families told them they hadn't received a letter from the condo board."It makes us question why he's the only one, considering other children play outside here all the time," said Robert Parker, who works in law enforcement. "He also happens to be the only Latino child. So that raises questions about the possible motive for something like that."Angelica Parker, Liam's mother, is from the Dominican Republic.Vincent Dellafranca, the husband of the South Shore Villas Condominium Association vice president, denies the letter was sent based on the boy's race."Don't make it racial," Vincent Dellafranca told reporters. "Everybody else was told the same thing, and they follow the rules."That's not true. Robert Parker has pictures of other family's children playing outside with Liam.Vincent Dellafranca also claimed the by-laws were written by the New York State Attorney General's office. When asked why children were not permitted to play outside, he cited the rules set up by the AG."We just follow the rules. We don't make them," Vincent Dellafranca said.A staffer for the attorney general's office denied that it had passed such a regulation."The Office of Attorney General does not have oversight of Condo by-laws," the staffer said.The Dellafrancas say they are concerned about the safety of the children playing and other members of the condo community."What if they hit somebody when they're riding or they run into somebody's car by accident?" Marie Dellafranca said.Vincent Dellafranca claimed the children ride their bikes in the condo parking lot. Not true, says Angelica Parker."I'm constantly with my son making sure he doesn't go near anyone's cars," she said.The Parkers have filed a discrimination complaint against South Shore Villas with the New York State Human Rights Division."There's nothing wrong with a child playing outside. It's part of living in a condominium. This isn't an over 55 or a senior community. Children should have the same rights here as anyone else," Robert Parker said.Liam's ability to continue riding his tricycle outside, like any other 4-year-old child, now depends on the findings of a state inquiry. It’s really stiff,” Grein said.Grein hurt her ankle a couple of years ago and says she’s been able to feel temperature changes in it ever since.“It’s just affected by the weather, cold, rain, everything,” she said. “I’ve told my friend before that I think it’s going to rain and then it did.”Grein isn’t the only one who says she can feel the weather change. Many people with arthritis pain say they can feel it in their joints or bones.At Englewood Primary Care in the Swedish Medical Center, Dr. Scott Joy says it isn’t an urban myth when people say they can feel the weather change.“Big changes in temperature can change blood flow through the body,” Joy said. “Any time we get a large weather system moving through the area it changes the pressure, and people who have chronic joint pain will often notice more joint pain.”A big temperature change can affect three groups of people in particular: those with heart disease, asthma or arthritis. The weather can pose serious health risks for all three groups, which is why Joy says it’s important to be prepared.For people with heart disease, it’s important to have all of your medications on hand and to take them as prescribed. Joy says it’s also a good idea to have some nitroglycerin on hand.If people experience pain in their chest or shortness of breath with the weather change, it’s important to seek medical help.“These are things that can actually lead to death and serious morbidity and mortality. It can lead to unnecessary ER visits, it can lead to long hospital stays, it can even lead to stays in the intensive care unit if you have a severe event,” Joy said.For people with asthma, along with having their chronic inhaler on hand, it’s important to keep a rescue inhaler nearby since the weather change can trigger some inflammation in the upper airways.For those with chronic joint pain, it’s important to have an anti-inflammatory on hand in case the temperature change causes pain.For everyone else, it’s important to bundle up and protect your skin.“You are at real risk for skin damage and dry skin and frostbite,” Joy said.As always, Joy says it’s also a good idea to stay hydrated as well and don’t overexert yourself.This story was originally published by 2433

ZAPATA COUNTY, Texas -- A traditionally Democratic county in Texas voted for a Republican presidential candidate for the first time in nearly 100 years.Helen Trapp was among the voters that helped President Donald Trump win Zapata County this year.When we caught up with Trapp, she stood outside her home and admired the flags hanging from her fa?ade. In the middle was the American flag and on the right was a blue pro-Trump flag.The flag reminds her of some words of wisdom her grandfather would say when she was a child: “Be proud of your Mexican heritage, but your country is first.”Decades later, she heard a similar message from Trump.“His policy was always America first,” Trap said.It was this message that encouraged the Mexican American to switch from voting blue to red. Her vote was one of the thousands that helped turn Zapata County, a traditional Democrat stronghold, into a Trump county.Trump’s election signs are on fences, billboards and houses in the community that borders Mexico, just south of Laredo.“He’s not a politician,” said Trap. “We’re tired of Democrats coming here when they want the vote and forget the town completely.”The county had not voted Republican in a presidential election since 1920. There is not even an established Republican Party in the community.Nearly 95% of residents are Mexican American. Some experts believed Trump’s negative comments of immigrants in the past would have kept Texas communities like Zapata blue but that wasn’t the case. Communities along or near the border like Reeves, Val Verde, Frio, LaSalle, Jim Wells, Kleberg, and Kennedy counties flipped from blue to red in this election.Judge Joe Wrathful believes that the county turned red because residents believed Democrats would not protect the oil and gas industries.“Being from a rural county, good jobs are hard to find. How the Program WorksThe Indiana Choice Scholarship Program provides state money to offset tuition costs at schools across Indiana. To qualify, students must live in Indiana and be ages 5-22. There are then eight different options, or "tracks" a student can qualified for, depending on various measurements. For example, there is a sibling track, meaning a student's brother or sister received a scholarship the previous year.A family's income level is also a factor when determining who gets the scholarship money. But the specific school is responsible for determining eligibility. The amount the student receives to attend the school is based on a state-created funding formula, but it could be as much as the school's tuition and fees.The money technically goes to each student's family, but it's tied to a specific school. If the student stops going to that school, they can't use the scholarship money at a different school. The schools participating in the program may not discriminate against a student based on race, color or national origin.Cathedral, Brebeuf Jesuit and RoncalliA few days before Cathedral's announcement, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School was faced with the same option — fire its teacher in a same-sex marriage or lose its Catholic classification. Brebeuf Jesuit chose the latter."We really just tried to look at it in terms of our community," Brebeuf Jesuit principal Greg VanSlambrook said. "Our decision trying to do the right thing by our teacher and by our community."After the school's decision, it can no longer use the name "Catholic," and will no longer be identified or recognized as a Catholic institution.Both Cathedral and Brebeuf Jesuit are in the Indiana Choice Scholarship Program, meaning they get money from the state to accept the lower-income students.Over the last three school years, Cathedral has received ,457,077.31 in scholarship vouchers from the state, according to data provided by the Indiana Department of Education. Over that same timeframe, Brebeuf Jesuit has received ,137,056.03 in scholarship vouchers.Last year, Roncalli High School placed its guidance counselor on administrative leave after it was discovered she was in a same-sex marriage.Backlash from State LawmakersThere is no mechanism in place to stop Cathedral from receiving public money. Two Democratic Indianapolis state lawmakers, one in each chamber, tried during the last session. Rep. Dan Forestal and Sen. J.D. Ford have pushed to include language in state law that would prevent voucher money from going to schools that discriminate against a staff member based on their sexuality, gender identity, race and many other factors.In Ford's bill, schools in the program would have to annually submit copies of teachers' contracts or other documentation, to prove they're not discriminating. His bill died without getting a hearing. Ford said he was told it was a busy session and the bill didn't meet the priorities of the Committee on Education and Career Development."People are talking about it," Ford said. "My constituents are talking about it, which means I have to talk about it."Both lawmakers have a personal stake in what's happened with these Indianapolis schools. Forestal is a Roncalli alumnus and Ford is the first openly LGBTQ state lawmaker."I think I have a duty to speak up on behalf of the folks this is happening to," Ford said.He also introduced an amendment into the state budget, to essentially do the same as the bill would've. But the amendment was defeated. Ford also said schools that don't receive public money can do what they want, but things change when state funding gets involved."If you are going to do that, that's fine, I'm still going to have an issue with it," Ford said. "It just wouldn't be in my purview as a state legislator.
