Jimmy John's is known for its "freaky fast" delivery, but one branch showed it can deliver a lot more in helping an ailing veteran.A woman thought she was calling a social worker to help her brother after his spinal surgery. Little did she know she had misdialed and called the sandwich shop in Columbus, Nebraska."The whole time I pretty much knew that she didn't know she was talking to someone from Jimmy John's. It didn't seem important to really bring it up, but I just wanted to make sure that she knew I was going to help her," said Jason Voss, the night-shift manager at the Columbus Jimmy John's.Army veteran Greg Holeman, 48, was recovering from spinal surgery when he returned to his home last week. His sister, Lisa Nagengast, flew in to help get him settled at home.Just moments after she landed back home in Florida, Nagengast received a voice mail from her brother saying he was having severe pain in his left leg and couldn't stand up.Unsure if the US Department of Veterans Affairs would pay for Holeman's ambulance, Nagengast attempted to reach Holeman's social worker. As she frantically rushed through the airport to claim her luggage, Nagengast began explaining her brother's situation over the phone.Voss didn't want to leave the store, so he got Zach Hillmer, one of the drivers, to go pick up Holeman and take him to the emergency room.Once Hillmer called Nagengast back to find out more information about her brother, it became clear to her she was not talking to a social worker."I was kinda gracefully [trying to] back out of everything that had happened at that point," Nagengast told CNN. "He was like, 'No no no, I will take him to the hospital. You give me his name and his address and make sure that he gets in the car with me, and I will get him where he needs to go.'"After the phone mix-up, Nagengast thanked the employees for stepping up. "I cannot say thank you enough to Jason Voss and Zack (sic) Hillmer ... there are not enough words to express my gratitude." Nagengast wrote in a Facebook post?Saturday."I'm famous for calling a wrong number, but Zach and Jason need to be famous because they did an amazing act of kindness," Nagengast told CNN.She isn't the only one praising the two workers. LA JOLLA (KGTV) - A car slammed into the wall of a fire station in La Jolla on Saturday night, narrowly missing firefighters.The crash happened around 7:30 p.m. at San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s station 9 on Ardath Lane near Torrey Pines Road. The car veered off the road and crashed into the patio wall of the station, while crews were eating dinner, according to Battalion Chief Joseph Scuri. The car missed the firefighters by about 12 feet. No one was injured.Three people were in the car at the time, but were also not injured. A natural gas line to an outdoor barbeque was hit and severed. Firefighters quickly turned off the gas to the station. SDG&E came out and repaired it. 704
Just before noon Saturday, a team of volunteer rescued climbers with Portland Mountain Rescue made contact with a 35-year-old injured climber who fell several hundred feet near Hogsback Ridge.Rescuers verified that the climber was in serious but stable condition. A helicopter with the Oregon Army National Guard was unable to reach the patient because of high winds.The helicopter returned to the mountain, still battling extremely dangerous winds, was able to drop of a National Guard Medic on the mountain to tend to the patient.The helicopter was forced to return to the Portland-area to refuel, but once again returned to once again try and evacuate the patient.The decision was made to transport the patient with a snowcat to a lower elevation.At approximately 7:45 p.m., the rescue crew that was with the patient was able to safely get the patient to Timberline Lodge parking lot where the Air Medic Evacuation Unit was waiting to transport the him to the hospital.The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office would like to extend a sincere thank you to our partners who assisted in the search and rescue effort: Portland Mountain Rescue, American Medical Response Reach and Treat, Hood River Crag Rats, Mountain Wave Search and Rescue, and the Oregon Army National Guard. 1280
KANSAS CITY, Kansas — An indictment unsealed Friday by a Wyandotte Grand Jury outlines the lead-up to the 2016 death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab.Earlier Friday, the Grand Jury indicted the Schlitterbahn corporation and the director of the park at the time of the incident, Tyler Miles, on several criminal counts, including involuntary manslaughter.The indictment itself cites whistleblowers inside Schlitterbahn who told grand jurors the company had covered up similar incidents in the past.Further, the Grand Jury indictment says amusement ride design and safety experts inspected the ride and found evidence other rafts had previously gone airborne off the slide. Additionally, the experts said the ride’s design “violated nearly all aspects of the longstanding industry safety standards…” “In fact, the design and operation of the Verruckt complied with few, if any, of the industry safety standards.”It was these bits of information that prompted investigators to launch an investigation.The Grand Jury indictment concludes Caleb Schwab’s death “and the rapidly growing list of injuries were forseeable and expected outcomes.”Finally, grand jurors write that those responsible for the ride’s operation knew they were guilty of criminal misconduct because they attempted to conceal evidence from law enforcement.“These obstructions substantially delayed the investigation.”In response to the details of the indictment, a company spokeswoman said the company plans to contest the allegations: 1513
