SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A San Diego man walked up to a horrifying sight:  his wife bloodied and unconscious in Balboa Park.Donna Gookin and her husband Ed were part of a group participating in orienteering last Wednesday in the early evening.  Orienteering is hiking sport that combines a compass, a map and locating markers.  The two were on separate parts of the trail. Not far from the Cabrillo Bridge, Ed found a cluster of emergency personnel around his wife, unconscious and about two feet from a pool of blood."Scared and fearing the worst. I may have lost my wife," said Ed Gookin.RELATED: Elderly veteran attacked in North Park while riding mobility scooterHis wife survived but suffered several fractures in her eye socket and bleeding in her brain.  She remembers regaining consciousness in the hospital the next day."A headache and wondering what happened," said Donna Gookin.Her last memory was choosing to go on a less steep path.  But her husband doesn't believe she fell. RELATED: Police investigating after body found in Balboa Park"I think somebody hit her.  Somebody clubbed her," said Ed.He says his wife, who has thin skin, had no injuries on her body.    "She would have been very bloodied and torn up, because of her skin, if she had ... fallen," said Ed.RELATED: 29-year-old stabbed on bench in Balboa ParkEd also points out her clothes were not sandy and there were no rocks near her that could have caused her injury.  If she was attacked, the couple hopes a witness will come forward."I want other people to be safe and think they would be safe walking on the trails in Balboa Park," said Donna.10News recently profiled an 81-year-old man who says he was struck near his eye by a man with a rock-filled sock in North Park the night after the Balboa Park incident.Police have yet to say if they're looking into a link.  If you have any information on the cases, call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A popular Thai restaurant in the College Area has been broken into for the second time in three weeks.At Sala Thai, there are sizzling entrees and simmering frustrations. "Saw the mess on the floor and thought what's going on?" said owner Chira Svangvitaya.A look at the surveillance video gave Svangvitaya the answer. Just before 5:30 Monday morning, a man in a hoodie is seen creeping into through the back door. He heads right to the cash register but finds it empty.He grabs some paperwork, empties the change dish and moments later, he leaves. It isn't for long. "He walked in and out three times, like he's not afraid of anything," said Svangvitaya.Two more trips nets him armfuls of stuff, including a computer, iPad, iPod, checkbooks and a case of soda. Near the end, he takes off his hood - and Svangvitaya's heart sank."I feel so sad and annoying. I don't know what I did to him," said Svangvitaya.The intruder is a stranger to her, but appears to be the same man who broke into the restaurant early Halloween morning. On that occasion, he used a crowbar to mangle the lock and damaged the register while grabbing 0 in cash. He also nabbed five tablets and a computer, crippling her online delivery business.Svangvitaya spent 0 to add a deadbolt after the Halloween break-in. This time, the intruder destroyed the repaired lock and the new deadbolt and went right on in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Bald Eagle admitted to the San Diego Humane Society on Fourth of July died Tuesday, the organization said.According to the Humane Society, the eagle passed away after being sedated and anesthetized for an examination. Veterinarians took the step after discovering that the bird was having trouble breathing Tuesday morning.“Several efforts were made to resuscitate the bald eagle, but we were unsuccessful.Our staff and partners have done everything in their power to help this bald eagle, and are extremely saddened by today’s outcome,” the organization said.RELATED: Bald eagle admitted to Humane Society on 4th of JulyThe eagle was brought to the society’s Project Wildlife Center by SoCal Parrots after it was seen on the ground for several days at Barrett Honor Camp in Alpine. 812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The office of District Attorney Summer Stephan will soon have a new tool to better document injuries to victims of domestic violence. Her office announced on Tuesday, May 7 that 35 cameras will be purchased to aid in investigations, thanks to a ,000 grant from a California Office of Emergency Services.According to Stephan, these cameras can produce high-quality photos, which will then assist how evidence is presented in court. "These cameras can help us preserve and document evidence -- including evidence of strangulation -- which is predictive of homicide, and allows us to move forward with prosecutions and fight this persistent crime in San Diego County," said Stephan.According to a recent crime report from the San Diego Association of Governments, in 2017 there were more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents reported in San Diego County. Stephan said there has been a 20% increase in the number of domestic violence cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office over the last five years. Plus, the District Attorney's Family Protection Division has 21 pending murder cases. 11 of those cases involve the murder of an intimate partner. In addition to the new cameras, Stephan's office is currently working on nine other initiatives to bring awareness to and combat domestic violence. These initiatives include a new countywide strangulation protocol, forensic exams, and recognizing the link between homelessness and domestic violence. 1508

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 9-year-old San Diego girl is using her cookie business to help support other local businesses.The 9-year-old, named Daniele, wrote a letter to Kenny Chen, the owner of Onyx Moto in Kearny Mesa, proposing a way to increase business.Daniele is proposing that Chen use Girl Scout Cookies to sell more motorcycles.RELATED: Girl Scout sells more than 300 boxes of cookies at San Diego marijuana dispensary“You can give customers a box (of girl scout cookies) while they sign all those papers.
