LAS VEGAS — For the first time in 20 years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for the treatment of the flu. The antiviral drug, called Xofluza, is a single dose treatment. It is for patients who are 12 or older. The drug must be taken within 48 hours of symptoms, according to the F.D.A. "Very exciting that we have another drug on the market," said Dr. Daliah Wachs.Xofluza is said to be as effective as Tamiflu in alleviating symptoms. "Do I think it's a lifesaver? Potentially yes," said Dr. Wachs.Unlike earlier drugs, Xofluza is expected to work against drug-resistant strains. (KGTV) - A tree trimming truck crashed into the side of a La Mesa church Wednesday, creating a gaping hole in the side of the building.A tree trimming crew was working on some trees on Pointe Ave., when their truck began rolling down the hill into the San Diego Taiwanese Presbyterian Church at 4426 Harbison Ave. around 1:30 p.m. according to witnesses."We all watched helplessly as there was nothing we could do," Rob Engquist, a witness, said. "Turns out they had gone out to reposition it, moved their wheel chalk out fo the way, don't know if the parking break was set or what happened, but the truck was going down the road on its own."La Mesa officials are investigating how the truck became dislodged.No one was inside the building at the time of the crash.The church's pastor told 10News the building hit by the truck is home to a weekly Bible study held Wednesday nights. 905
LAS VEGAS — A window washer is dead after falling at the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.The fall was reported at 12:33 p.m. local time on Wednesday.He was pronounced deceased at University Medical Center.Witnesses say gusty winds had pushed the rigging against the building several times before the man fell.OSHA will be investigating the incident with investigators checking the worker's equipment.A spokesperson for the Trump Organization released the following statement:“We are deeply saddened to learn of the incident today. (KGTV) - A medical marijuana dispensary could be opening its doors just feet away from children in La Mesa.Last month, the La Mesa Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for New Origins Management, Inc. to open a medical marijuana dispensary, but the center says they were never contacted about it. One woman who has a teen at the San Diego Center for Children called the pot shop counterproductive to what parents and the clinic are trying to accomplish. The nonprofit helps young people with mental and behavioral issues.The La Mesa Medical Plaza is a pretty peaceful place, but the San Diego Center for Children is worried about its future neighbor. The clinic says you can draw direct line from their front door to the front door of the proposed medical marijuana dispensary."Our concern is having our youth that close to a medical marijuana dispensary," said Dr. Cheryl Rode, VP of Clinical Operations for the Center.The clinic occupies Suites J and K but a medical marijuana dispensary could be moving into Suite C. The offices share a walkway and parking lot."Literally, our clients and their clients would be interacting pretty regularly," Dr. Rode said.In November 2016, La Mesa voters passed Measure U, prohibiting medical marijuana dispensaries from opening within 1,000 feet of a minor-oriented facility.It's defined as any after-school program, teen center, club for boys and/or girls, children's theater, or children's museum, where the primary use is for people under the age of 18. The Center argues it qualifies as an after-school program."We feel that we clearly meet the criteria for a minor-oriented facility and that our facility was overlooked," Dr. Rode said.But the city disagrees. They tell 10News because voters approved measure U, they don't have the ability to interpret the law or intent outside of its plain language, which does not include mental health and therapeutic services. (KGTV) - An Uber driver says she was physically assaulted by a passenger Sunday night in La Mesa after a dispute over a mask."This is definitely the most insane experience driving with Uber that I've ever had," said Tia.Just past 6 p.m. Sunday, Tia, who first started driving for Uber last summer, arrived for a pickup outside the Echo Pointe apartments.Tia says a man and the passenger's sister ushered the passenger into the car with a warning for Tia: the passenger was drunk."She didn't have a mask on ... so I asked her if she could please put on a spare mask, which I had in the back seat. Took her awhile to put it on, but she did," said Tia.As the ride got started, Tia says her passenger wouldn't let it go."She said in a very snarky tone, 'Are you more comfortable now that I have a mask on?' She was very drunk, very belligerent, yelling," said Tia.Tia say she decided to end the ride."I was fed up with the disrespect," said Tia.Tia says she returned to the pickup spot and asked her to get out repeatedly, but the woman refused. Tia recorded some of it on her phone. Tia, who eventually called 911, says when she got out of the car and reached in to remove the woman's belongings, the passenger grabbed her neck from behind.According to Tia, the passenger became violent, chasing her around the car for several minutes, at one point hitting in the right eye. Tia says the passenger's sister and the man came out and subdued the woman, allowing Tia to drive away, and meet police and file a report."I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe I was assaulted for essentially wearing a mask ... People need to treat each other with respect. Wear a mask ... We're just trying to keep everybody safe," said Tia.Tia says she's still feeling pain in her eye but she's feeling better. She's hoping an arrest is made so a message is sent: this behavior is not acceptable.A La Mesa Police spokesperson says they are awaiting the report to be turned in by the officer before it is assigned to an investigator. 2030
