On Wednesday, a NASA research jet took off from the flight line.Part of why Miramar is so critical is it's location. Colonel Charles Dockery, the Commanding Officer at MCAS Miramar, said due to air congestion over land, Miramar's location close to the ocean alleviates that complication."Within one flight's distance from Miramar, we are within 66% of the training air space in the Continental U.S." he said. Some of their training, mimicked in Top Gun. "Not only to take down an adversary or an airplane, but also defend ourselves from their aircraft trying to attack us," he said. Right now, MCAS Miramar is working to remain competitive with nations overseas."We have four major nation state competitors out there, Russia China, North Korea and Iran," Col. Dockery said.If the need arises, he said troops would deploy from Miramar to support the effort to defend the U.S.He said if Miramar didn't exist, it would mean millions of tax-payer dollars to conduct the same training. National walkout protests are planned at schools across the country on Wednesday in support of students affected by the Parkland, Florida school shooting.Students, teachers, parents and others associated with schools are participating to push for legislation that aims to protect public places from gun violence.The walkout is organized by Women's March Youth EMPOWER, and the group is calling for those who support the effort to walk out of schools for 17 minutes at 10 a.m. in each time zone. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Tennessee woman is calling for more oversight on the U.S. Small Business Administration loan program, saying it has made people an easy target for thieves.Pat Golab has been following the trail left behind by the people responsible for stealing her identity back in August. The last time she spoke about what happened, she shared that she was approved for the SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). Not only did Golab not apply, but she doesn't have a business of her own.In the months that followed, Golab filed three reports with the SBA and the Office of the Attorney General. She finally managed to get her hands on a copy of the application and says what she found should put others on alert.Thieves used her name, address, and social security number to apply for the ,000 loan, but left virtually everything else blank.Simple questions like ethnicity, gender, and veteran status went ignored. Golab says that should have been a red flag, but it only got worse from there.“Things like, how long have you been in business? Nothing,” said Golab.Questions on prior business history and bankruptcies were left blank. These thieves claimed 12 employees were working, but also say they plan to retain none.“The application never should have been approved,” Golab said.So why was a program designed to help businesses keep their employee, paying out thousands of dollars to businesses who don’t plan on retaining anyone? That’s the question Golab has yet to have answered.“I looked on the SBA’s website on how to complete the application and one of the first things it says is every question must be answered. If not, the application will be returned and you’ll come back and you’ll start at the bottom. Which was not what they did at all,” Golab said.The loan in Golab’s name has been deferred, but she still gets letters from the SBA saying they need her to make 0 payments each month to cover the accruing interest.We contacted the SBA once again on Monday and they tell us they can’t speak in detail about individual claims.They issued this statement:“The SBA Office of Inspector General and the agency’s federal partners are working diligently to resolve Economic Injury Disaster Loan and PPP fraud incidents.Additionally, the SBA does not comment on individual borrowers. Evidence of waste, fraud, and abuse with any of SBA’s loan programs is not tolerated and should be reported.”Douglas Schmidt is a professor of computer science at Vanderbilt University and says cybercriminals are expanding their operations around the country. This makes it even more challenging to catch them in the act, and almost impossible if they are beyond the jurisdiction of local and state law enforcement.With how fast federal officials had to roll out money for unemployment programs and the SBA loans, Schmidt says it makes sense why some applications like those filed in Golab’s name could slip through the cracks.“It’s a growing problem. It's a problem that is only solved by education,” Schmidt said.If they haven’t tried already, Schmidt says thieves will send phishing emails and or calls, claiming to be one of these agencies you trust. Whatever you do, do not fall for it.Pay close attention to the email address or phone number. If you’re at all skeptical about who you’re talking to, try calling the agency back yourself to verify if they made the call in the first place.Around the holiday season, thieves will also try and use the names of people close to you. They may give you a story about a relative falling on hard time needing money. The same advice applies again. Try contacting the relative yourself, to avoid sending money to someone you do not know.Thieves may also try and convince you that your Amazon package is delayed and they need more information to verify where to send it. More than a million chainsaws from Harbor Freight Tools are being recalled because the power switch can malfunction causing a serious injury hazard. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, even after the power switch is moved to the "off" position the chainsaws can continue to operate.Harbor Freight Tools has received 15 reports of chainsaws continuing to operate after being turned, resulting in three laceration injuries — including one serious injury to the arm requiring stitches.The recall includes two models of 14-inch chainsaws sold under three different brand names: 623

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Pregnant women in the healthcare industry are wondering if they should get the COVID-19 vaccine since it's available to them following the emergency use authorization.At Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Dr. Jennifer Thompson, an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said the risks associated with getting COVID-19 while pregnant are far worse than the risks associated with the vaccine. Thompson said, "They have increased risk of hospitalization, need for ICU, mechanical ventilation, and a slight increase risk in death compared to non-pregnant patients." She said her recommendation pertains to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for her patients who are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant. “So because of that increased risk, women who are pregnant are considered a higher risk group, and so therefore many of our organizations the CDC, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine recommend that the COVID-19 vaccine should not be withheld from pregnant individuals who meet criteria for vaccination based on their recommended priority group,” Thompson said.Dr. Thomspon practices what she preaches. "I actually received my vaccine on Friday, so I’m not concerned at this point about the long-term safety data," Thompson said. She noted that she’s had no side effects yet.While pregnant women were excluded from the trials, some women joined not knowing they were pregnant. Dr. Thompson said they’ve been following those cases closely. "These numbers are really small, but we have not seen significant adverse reactions both from a pregnancy standpoint or a fetal standpoint," Thompson said.Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation out there. There was an article circulating online which said the vaccine could cause infertility. Dr. Thompson said there’s no evidence to support that. "There’s some concern that the spike protein has a similar genetic makeup to one of the proteins in the placenta, however that similarity is less than 1%, and infertility has not been found from any of the scientific data," Thompson said. In addition, the COVID-19 vaccine is believed to be safe for women who are breast-feeding. Live vaccines are not recommended for pregnant women, but the COVID-19 vaccine is not live. “It’s an mRNA vaccine which is broken down by the body, and not incorporated into your DNA at all,” Thompson said, “Fetal risks are thought to be low due to the fact that the mRNA is broken down by your circulation and pre-clinical studies have been very reassuring.”If you have questions, talk to your doctor.
