Congressional leaders will hold their weekly press conferences on Thursday, their first since it was formally projected that Democrats would hold on to control of the chamber for another two years.Democratic leadership in Congress slammed President Donald Trump's refusal to concede the election to President-elect Joe Biden in a press conference on Capitol Hill Thursday. In comments to reporters, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi highlighted that Trump's election fight comes as the U.S. is facing an unprecedented surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.Watch Rep. Kevin McCarthy's press conference in the video below."The President and the Republicans in Congress have ignored by delay, distortion, denial. Deaths have been caused. And what are they doing now? Continuing to ignore in spite of these numbers of (COVID-19 cases)," she said.Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer claimed Republicans were "poisoning the well" by supporting Trump's challenge to the election on unproven claims of widespread voter fraud.Despite nearly all media outlets calling the 2020 election for President-elect Joe Biden, President Donald Trump has said he plans to challenge the results of the election on unsubstantiated claims of fraud. Despite the President's claim, no state has yet reported widespread issues in ballot tallying that would indicate the results of the election are in doubt. While House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy mostly avoided addressing Trump's specific claims of voter fraud, he said he supports the administration's right to legally challenge the results. He added that all Americans regardless of whom they support should welcome the Trump campaign's challenges, claiming it made the process more transparent and restored faith in the electoral system.McCarthy did not directly respond when asked if he believed Trump's lawsuits would alter the outcome of the election. On Wednesday, The Associated Press formally projected that Democrats had picked up the required 220 seats in order to retain control of the House of Representatives through 2022.Pelosi's comments come as Politico reports that she and other current House leaders are on track to continue serving in their roles when the next Congress is sworn in next year.Pelosi, who is in her second stint as House Speaker (she also served in the same role from 2007 to 2011) has faced criticism from progressive members of the party who claim her moderate politics caused the Democrats to lose seats in the 2020 election.Watch Pelosi's press conference in the video below. 2535

Customers are still sitting down for a cold beer at Joyride Brewing in Edgewater, Colorado.“We always talk about stopping and smelling the hops. It’s all about the joy ride of life,” said Grant Babb, the owner of Joyride Brewing. That’s despite new state rules that state bars must serve food to stay open, and Joyride doesn't serve food.“It makes you lose a little sleep at night, not knowing every day when you wake up if you have to do something different. It’s trying to shoot at a bullseye and just watching it constantly move,” said Babb.Babb had to make arrangements with multiple food trucks and the restaurant down the street to stay open. That’s because the recent spike in COVID-19 cases has led the state to put its economic restart plans on hold.“In our case, we schedule out food trucks about a month and a half in advance, and we’re working with only the food trucks we’re trusted partners with,” said Babb.Colorado isn’t the only state backtracking due to the surge. According to a tracker from the New York Times, 15 states are pausing plans to reopen and six are reversing course and shutting some things back down.Arizona is one of those states where bars, gyms, and theaters have been ordered closed once again. Restaurants there fear the same might happen to them soon if new COVID-19 cases aren’t curbed.“You can’t simply turn off and turn on a restaurant operation,” said Steve Churci, the head of the Arizona Restaurant Association. He says the toll of shutting down those businesses for a second time would be crushing.“If you were to shut down, what happens to the suicide rate? Does that go up? What happens to the homelessness rate, people losing their homes? So, there’s a whole other sad and unfortunate contingent that would be impacted by this,” said Churci.Churci says service industry workers employ almost a quarter-million people and the state has lost 5 million in revenue from food sales. He says in a normal year, US restaurants sell 0 billion worth of food.“Almost a trillion-dollar industry. So, we often say we’re the cornerstone of our communities. We’re the heart and soul of America in the restaurant industry, and we are,” said Churci. For Joyride, the losses have been heavy as well.“We, we’re down 80 percent in the month of March, April, May. And then June, we’re still seeing a significant decrease, we’re down definitely 40 percent,” said Babb. For Babb, the money hurt, but letting his staff go was harder.“It’s the most painful thing you can do is tell an employee that we don’t have any work for you,” he said.He says it will hurt even more if he has to send his staff home again. 2647

Conventions may at times seem like it's all about the confetti and speeches, but what Joe Biden and Kamala Harris want more than anything after this Democratic Convention is what's known as a "post-convention bounce." The phrase describes an increase in support in the polls immediately following a convention HISTORIC BOUNCESSince 1968, presidential campaigns have, on average, received a 5 percent increase in the polls following their conventions. Since 2004, convention bounces have been getting smaller, with the average being around 2 percent. WHY BIDEN MIGHT NOT GET A BIG BOUNCE"People have had a bit more time to evaluate the candidates already (and) maybe opinions are a little more locked," Professor Thomas Holbrook of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee said, commenting on the fact bounces have been tougher and tougher to get. Apart from recent history working against the Biden campaign, television ratings are down compared to four years ago. "There could be fewer persuadable voters," Holbrook added. There is also the fact President Donald Trump has his convention next week. WHAT THE CAMPAIGNS THINKBiden advisers aren't as concerned with the lower television ratings, saying more Americans are live streaming the convention on their laptops and cellphones than ever before. 1306

CORONADO (KGTV) -- A man was taken into custody Wednesday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman on a boat anchored in San Diego Bay, Harbor Police announced.Pablo Alvarez, 38, was booked on five felony counts related to sexual assault by force, according to jail records. The alleged assault happened in the waters off Coronado's Tidelands Park in what's known as the A-4 anchorage, a place where several dozen boats are anchored just north of the Coronado Bridge. There is no dock, so boaters must use a dinghy or a kayak to access the larger vessels in the anchorage.Early Wednesday morning, the victim fled a sailboat in the anchorage using a kayak, but the kayak capsized in the darkness, forcing the woman to swim the rest of the way to shore, said Harbor Police Lt. Victor Banuelos. The woman managed to call the police just before 4:45 a.m.Alvarez and the woman were the only people on board the sailboat at the time, according to Banuelos. The nature of their relationship is under investigation.Alvarez is scheduled to appear in court Friday.Harbor Police asked anyone with information to call detectives at 619-686-8132. 1141

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - This weekend's stormy weather grounded, then destroyed a 75-foot Russian-built racing boat once sent to San Diego to race in the America's Cup.Around 7 a.m. Saturday, cellphone video show the large sailboat as it ran aground. Not long after, Lifeguard Captain Sean Casey says the waves went to work."Once it was aground, pretty quickly the mast broke off, and the boat literally broke into two pieces," said Casey.Casey says the boat had been anchored more than two miles away, near the Zuniga Jetty in Point Loma."There were high winds and rough conditions out of Point Loma. Assuming the anchor line just broke," said Casey. The boat was named Age Of Russia.According to a 1992 Los Angeles Times story, it was built in Leningrad for six million rubles. Under current conversion rates, six million rubles is valued at about ,000.A Russian group of yachtmen sent the boat to San Diego in 1992 to compete in the America's Cup, but that group was never sanctioned by race officials to compete. Because the group couldn't afford to bring it back, the boat was slated to taken to be taken to the Miramar Landfill and flattened. But then a buyer came forward.Casey says recently, it had been used for tours of the bay, before its final, unscheduled trip Saturday. Its frantic owner ended up at the beach."Obviously his reaction was sort of shock and dismay. He was very upset when he saw it on the beach," said Casey.Casey says the boat was insured, which means the cleanup costs could be covered."The contractor will likely have to use heavy equipment, dump trucks, to break up the remaining pieces and take it to the landfill," said Casey.Casey says there is an ongoing problem of boats without slips on the bay, being anchored in the Zuniga Jetty, and becoming loose during stormy weather. In 2019, the City Council amended San Diego’s Municipal Code to restrict open-water boat anchoring near Zuniga Jetty Shoal to two hours. 1960
