The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USPSC) announced Wednesday that it is issuing a recall of Xtava Allure hair dryers due to concerns that they could catch fire or deliver electrical shocks.According to the USPSC, the recall affects more than 200,000 hair dryers.Nearly 200 people have reported the dryers and power cords have either "overheated, melted, exploded or caught fire" while in use. Eighteen people sustained burns while using the product, with one of those being classified as a "severe" burn.The dryers were sold online at Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Groupon, in addition to Xtava's own website. They were sold individually or in a hair care pack that included "treatment products, a flat iron or a diffuser."The affected products include the following SKU numbers on a label on the back:  XTV010001, XTV010001N, XTV010002, or XTV010002N.Those with the dryers should contact Xtava directly. The winds were so strong on July 26 in Redding, California, authorities say they uprooted trees, ripped roofs off houses and downed power lines.The fast-moving Carr Fire took three family members from Ed Bledsoe that day -- his wife and two great-grandchildren."The tornado was hovering over the house," Amanda Woodley, Bledsoe's granddaughter, told CNN. "It was just a tornado fire over the house."Bledsoe had left the house earlier to go to the doctor's office, and was on the phone with his family members as the flames closed in. They believed they were safe from the fire and knew nothing of the approaching hellscape that was like nothing any of them had ever seen before.He said his son drove toward the flames in the hope of rescuing his family members. "My son said the grass wasn't on fire, the trees were getting sucked up in the air and burning," Bledsoe told CNN. "He said when he opened his doors, the leaves hit him like somebody was slapping him. He said it was sucking his breath out, and he got back in his car and tried to get out."Bledsoe was on the phone with his wife and great-grandchildren until the very end."It sucked the roof off the house and the walls fell out and the roof went right down on them," he said.The Carr Fire, now the sixth most destructive fire in California history, has consumed 121,000 acres and killed six people.Dr. Craig Clements of San Jose State University's Fire Weather Research Laboratory said there have been few observed firenadoes of this magnitude before. He says the conditions have to be perfect for something like this to occur.Firenadoes are formed from a fire's intense heat, causing the air to heat up quickly and rise rapidly. That, combined with surface winds that are obviously quite strong, creates a vortex similar to a dust devil.Clements says aside from the potentially damaging winds, a firenado like this can even pull fire in different directions.At 3:27 p.m. that day, the National Weather service sent out a statement noting that "radar indicates strong rotation located within the intense fire activity of the Carr Fire." They warned of possible wind gusts up to 50 mph."The wind went from zero wind to 40 to 60 mph winds within 15 minutes," Justin Sanchez told CNN. He said his house was consumed by the firenado. "(There was) a loud disturbing deep growling noise as it spun around in a spiral. It seemed the outside was moving around so slowly, with two-foot sized pieces of debris floating in it."Sanchez says when he and his family were about a mile and a half from his home, they looked back and could see their neighborhood consumed by it. 2631

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to warn against eating any romaine lettuce harvested from the central Coastal growing regions of Northern and Central California amid a multistate outbreak of E. coli illnesses linked to romaine lettuce. The agency also reported Thursday that nine additional people have been reported ill since November 26.Now, 52 people have been infected with E. coli in this outbreak, which was announced in October, according to the CDC.Illnesses have been reported in 15 states: California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.Nineteen people have been hospitalized, including two who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. The so-called cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Jose now includes North Carolina's Outer Banks, Maryland and Delaware, after the National Hurricane Center on Thursday shifted its potential path west.The cone shows the probable track of the center of a storm over a five-day period.With maximum sustained winds of 70 mph, Jose is a tropical storm after being a hurricane through the week. The storm is expected to strengthen and become a hurricane again by this weekend, the center said. At one point last weekend, Jose was a Category 4 hurricane.Jose, which recently completed an odd clockwise loop, is forecast to move closer to the United States before turning north. The vast majority of computer models still keep the storm out to sea, but a few show it making a potential landfall along the East Coast, CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller said."Jose could produce other direct impacts next week along portions of the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward to New England, but it is too soon to determine what those impacts might be or where they could occur," the hurricane center said.Track the storm hereThe inclusion of the Outer Banks in Thursday's advisories marked the first time the United States mainland has been in the forecast cone tracking Jose.As of 11 pm on Thursday, Jose was in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, about 375 miles northeast of the southeastern Bahamas, and was moving west-northwest at 8 mph.No matter its path, Tropical Storm Jose is expected to bring rough surf and rip current conditions in the next few days. The skies over several US states and Ontario, Canada, lit up briefly on Wednesday as a presumed fireball streaked over the daytime sky.Despite the midday sun, the fireball was clearly visible in videos captured at the time of the event.According to the American Meteor Society, dozens of eyewitnesses reported seeing the fireball shortly after 12 p.m. ET. The reports were clustered around Lake Ontario, but the organization received reports from Michigan, Ohio, and even as far away as Maryland and Virginia.An eyewitness in Ohio reported to the American Meteor Society, “It was like a ball of fire with a tail...surreal to see in the daytime.”Another eyewitness in Ontario said, “Astonishing, amazing, still get goosebumps talking about it.”What caused the bright flash hasn’t been confirmed, but is presumed to be a meteor. Meteors are not uncommon events, as small rocks and objects enter the Earth’s atmosphere on a daily basis.
