SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An El Cajon man was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for distributing fentanyl, some of which caused the fatal overdose of a former player for the San Diego Old Aztecs Rugby Football Club.Christopher Glenn Emison, 33, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a distribution of fentanyl count for selling more than 40 grams of the drug, some of which led to the death of 45-year-old Derrick Hotchkiss in his San Diego home on April 11, 2019.A co-defendant, 34-year-old San Diego resident Jeffrey Alden Blair, pleaded guilty in February and is due to be sentenced next month.Prosecutors say Hotchkiss had text messages on his phone indicating Emison sold him fentanyl the night before his death.Shortly after Hotchkiss' death, investigators searched Emison's home and vehicle and seized fentanyl, heroin residue, firearms, ammunition and other items indicating drug sales.Prosecutors say Emison admitted to knowing the fentanyl was dangerous and apparently sent text messages to Hotchkiss to warn him of the drug's strength but never received a response."Selling drugs is not a victimless crime. Selling drugs is a root cause of crime, cartel violence, the destruction of families and in this case, death," said DEA Special Agent in Charge John W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman who had more than three times the legal blood-alcohol limit when she crashed her SUV head-on into another vehicle while driving her three young daughters through Rancho Bernardo pleaded guilty Friday to felony child abuse and drunk driving charges. Mayra Alejandra Troncoso, 30, had a .29 percent blood-alcohol content when she drove on the wrong side of Camino del Norte on Nov. 12, 2018. Her SUV crashed head-on into an oncoming 2011 Jeep Liberty, causing severe injuries -- including a skull fracture and a brain bleed -- to her 9-month-old daughter, who was riding unrestrained. The defendant's 2-year-old daughter suffered facial injuries and her 8-year-old child broke a bone. The 57-year-old driver of the other car suffered broken bones, authorities said. Prosecutors say that at the time of the crash, she was on probation and driving on a suspended license due to a 2017 North County DUI, in which she also crashed with at least one of her children in the vehicle. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman was killed when she walked into the path of two marked police cruisers in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said Sunday.The vehicles were going westbound in the 100 block of West Washington Street when the woman, standing on the north curb line of the street -- and not in the crosswalk -- walked into the cruisers' path a little after 11 p.m.Saturday, the San Diego Police Department reported.She was struck by both cars and rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. 540

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego woman who falsely claimed to have two employees on the payroll of her marketing company in order to obtain a CARES Act loan pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday.Nikole L. Edwards, 40, the founder of Social Savvy Marketing, admitted to submitting fake tax records and payroll information to receive a loan through the Paycheck Protection Program.The U.S. Attorney's Office said that in April and May, she applied for "tens of thousands of dollars of PPP loans" with three financial institutions, claiming in applications that Social Savvy Marketing had two employees who earned annual salaries of ,000 and ,000, when the company actually had no employees.Edwards provided fake addresses, Social Security numbers and W-2 forms for the nonexistent employees, according to prosecutors, who said that upon being rejected for a loan, she claimed, "This is a lifeline for my employees and my business and we won't survive without it."She was able to obtain a ,583 PPP loan, but will have to repay the entire amount as part of the plea agreement.Edwards entered her plea Tuesday in San Diego federal court and is slated to be sentenced Nov. 18. The charge of making false statements to the Small Business Administration carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment and a ,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office."The PPP is designed to help struggling businesses meet legitimate payroll obligations, not to enrich sole proprietors engaging in outright fraud," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man waiting for an Uber was stabbed in San Diego Sunday morning, according to San Diego police.At 2:08 a.m., a 37 year-old male was waiting for his Uber ride on the corner of 8th Avenue and B Street when he was approached by two female suspects and a male suspect, all in their 20s. The victim began talking to one of the women when she reached into his pocket and stole his cellphone. The suspects ran away and the victim chased them. After he caught up with them, the male suspect turned and jabbed the victim in the right arm.The victim began to bleed and witnessed the three suspects running away and getting into a red Chevy Camaro that fled westbound on B Street.
