SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Restaurant chain Tapioca Express has agreed to pay more than 0,000 to settle a federal sexual harassment lawsuit involving two franchises in Chula Vista and National City, where the owner was accused of making unwanted sexual advances toward young female employees, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported Monday. Tapioca Express will pay 2,500 due to the unidentified restaurant owner's conduct toward Filipina employees between the ages of 17 and 23, according to the EEOC, which reported the harassment involved "repeated and unwanted comments of a sexual nature and physical contact," which led some employees to quit their jobs. The EEOC did not specify how many employees were harassed, but alleged that a written complaint did not lead to any changes regarding the harassment. "We commend the young women for coming forward to shine a light on the harassment to which they were subjected," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. "Their strength may give courage to other young people or those in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community who may be suffering harassment or discrimination in the workplace to come forward as well."In addition to the settlement money, Tapioca Express will hire an "external monitor" to review sexual harassment policies and procedures and establish a complaint procedure for employees. Anti-sexual harassment training will also be provided to all employees. "Harassment remains a persistent problem in the workplace, which must be addressed top-down in any company," said Anna Park, regional attorney for EEOC's Los Angeles district office. "We are encouraged by the steps Tapioca Express has taken to resolve this matter and the measures it has put in place to prevent workplace harassment and discrimination." 1834

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Loyal SC is scheduled to resume play Saturday evening, facing Sacramento Republic FC at Torero Stadium three days after both teams had games postponed because of positive coronavirus tests by LA Galaxy II.SD Loyal's game Wednesday against LA Galaxy II at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson was postponed after individuals scheduled to be involved in the game tested positive for COVID-19 as part of weekly routine testing, USL Championship announced. The individuals were immediately isolated at home, demonstrating no symptoms, and in good spirits under the care of team physicians, according to the league. All league, local and state health and wellness protocols were being followed, the league reported.USL Championship also postponed Wednesday's Republic FC-Orange County SC game scheduled for Sacramento after the league was notified of a positive COVID-19 test result from a "previous opponent."Republic FC lost to LA Galaxy II, 1-0, last Saturday.USL Championship announced on Thursday that 11 "covered persons" with LA Galaxy II had tested positive in testing conducted Tuesday.USL health and safety protocols require all covered persons to undergo weekly testing. All tests for LA Galaxy II before Tuesday had been negative, according to the league."There are a lot of adjectives to describe the last 24 hours, certainly wild, crazy," SD Loyal coach Landon Donovan said on Thursday. "But most of all I'm happy about how our team handled it because it was not easy. There were a lot of ups and downs."SD Loyal personnel were tested again Thursday and all were negative, Donovan said. The team has not had a positive test result, Donovan said.Like most other sporting events around the world, fans will be barred from the Division II men's soccer game under public health directives prohibiting public events and gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic. The 7 p.m. game will be televised by The CW San Diego and ESPN+. 1970

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Testimony wrapped up Friday in the trial of a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than three decades ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, 63, is charged with murder and a special- circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Ford is accused of strangling the victim. Last year, investigators with the District Attorney's Office's identified Ford as a suspect through DNA evidence, prosecutors say, as well as a single fingerprint he allegedly left on Hayden's stovetop.RELATED: April trial date set for man accused in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanTrial testimony indicated that Ford's fingerprint did not yield results on a San Diego County database, but when submitted to a national database, a match was found in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest in North Carolina for making criminal threats. He was subsequently arrested in the summer of 2018.His murder trial began earlier this week at the downtown San Diego courthouse. Closing arguments are slated to be delivered Tuesday morning. He remains held in custody without bail. 1176

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council candidate Kelvin Barrios suspended his campaign today, following allegations of ethics violations.Barrios was running for City Council District 9 in the seat soon to be vacated by Council President Georgette Gomez.``Throughout this race I have been hit, morally and mentally, more times that I can even count,'' Barrios' statement released Monday said. ``And I get it -- there were issues, we needed to address them.``It seemed like every time I did, we would collectively shift away focus from the real needs of our community. The real struggle and hardships my neighbors are facing became second to the media blitz filled with negativity that just served as a distractor.''The San Diego Union-Tribune reported earlier this year that Barrios was under criminal investigation for alleged mishandling of campaign funds and was the subject of a California Fair Political Practices Commission complaint alleging he used thousands of dollars in contributions to political committees for personal use.Earlier this month, additional media reports alleged Barrios did not disclose more than ,000 he received while working for Laborers Local Union 89, and did not report a brief overlap that existed while he worked for both the union and Gomez's office.Barrios' name will still appear on the November ballot despite the campaign suspension.Barrios' campaign opponent, Sean Elo-Rivera, tweeted a statement saying Barrios suspending his campaign ``will allow our community to move away from focusing on scandals and toward focusing on the brighter future San Diegans deserve.''``Our campaign will continue engaging the community and building the momentum we'll need to make San Diego a world-class city with opportunity for all,'' the statement said. 1793
