CAPE YORK, Australia – Australian scientists say they’ve discovered a massive new coral reef that’s taller than the Empire State Building.The scientists were aboard a research vessel exploring the sea when they found the detached structure in the Great Barrier Reef last week, according to a press release from the Schmidt Ocean Institute.The institute says the “blade-like” reef is the first to be discovered in over 120 years.On Sunday, the institute’s team conducted a dive using an underwater robot to explore the new reef and learned that it's more than 500 meters high, the base is about 1.5 kilometers wide and it rises to its shallowest depth of only 40 meters below the sea surface.The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s.“This unexpected discovery affirms that we continue to find unknown structures and new species in our ocean,” said Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of Schmidt Ocean Institute. “The state of our knowledge about what’s in the ocean has long been so limited. Thanks to new technologies that work as our eyes, ears and hands in the deep ocean, we have the capacity to explore like never before. New oceanscapes are opening to us, revealing the ecosystems and diverse life forms that share the planet with us.”This isn’t the institute’s first big discovery of the year, though. (AP) — NASCAR has cleared Kyle Larson to return in 2021, ending his long suspension for using a racial slur while playing a video racing game. “NASCAR continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion across our sport,” the sanctioning body said in an official statement. “Kyle Larson has fulfilled the requirements set by NASCAR and has taken several voluntary measures, to better educate himself so that he can use his platform to help bridge the divide in our country," NASCAR said in a press release. "Larson’s indefinite suspension has been lifted. Under the terms of his reinstatement, he will be cleared to return to all NASCAR racing activities effective January 1, 2021.”Larson was suspended in April after he used the n-word while playing an online racing game in which viewers could follow along. According to the Associated Press, Larson lost communication and during his mic check, he said “you can’t hear me?” That was followed by the N-word.He was dropped by his sponsors and fired by Chip Ganassi Racing. CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago resident William Brown loves basketball.“I've always been Michael Jordan crazy," Brown said. "You know that’s like every Black kid’s dream growing up, wanting to be a basketball player, until you realize your dreams ain’t gonna work but. Ya know, that’s always been one of my favorite things to do.”He realized that dream would never be a reality when he was a teenager.“I was 17. I was incarcerated for nine years in prison.”Brown grew up in a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Some call it the city’s murder capital with more homicides being committed there than any other neighborhood in the city.“When we young, we really didn’t have nobody positive to look up to. The person with the nice car, that was the one selling drugs. He was doing all the illegal stuff,” Brown said.He says owning a gun to use, or simply protect yourself, is basically expected in a community with illegal activity. Brown says he’s lost a lot of family and friends to gun violence. He points to the tattoos on his arms of lost loved ones:“These is like my cousins and friends that died. Best friend, Bert. Bud, he was like my uncle. Frut, he was one of my closest. And the rest of them are like my cousins: DJ, Aaron, Yak, Von, TG, Low, Dome, Devin, Lil Mike.”After being released from prison, Brown says he struggled to get on his feet until he got involved with an organization called READI. He says he needed a bit of a push to commit to a change in his life. Thankfully, persistence paid off.“My outreach worker came ringing my doorbell, asking my momma where I was at,” Brown said.Now he is a READI participant. According to Community Project Manager Kimeco Roberson, READI is an innovative evidence-based response to reducing gun violence in Chicago.“A lot of the shootings that are happening are coming from specific communities and a specific targeted group of people, or a specific group of people within those communities, and that small number of people have contributed to a large percentage of violence that has taken place across the city,” Roberson said.Across the country, especially in cities, Roberson says people of color are marginalized in communities that have experienced decades of trauma.“Trauma happens in the brain. Trauma can be healed. So a part of that healing process is our cognitive-behavioral therapy.”Roberson says one key to helping these men is through relationships. READI offers rigorous cognitive-behavioral therapy mixed with job training and career readiness.Speaking from experience, Brown says READI has found a successful way to make a difference in people’s lives.“I’m doing better through READI already. Like that’s a consistent check for me every week and I got somewhere to go,” Brown said.He may not be a pro basketball player, but he can be a positive role model in the years to come for his four-month-old son.“I’mma show him like, ‘you don’t got to do this, you ain’t got to do what I did, you don’t have to sit in jail for nine years for gun violence, you don’t have to have a bad juvenile background'. Champion is phasing out an exclusive line at Target and Wall Street isn't pleased.Hanesbrands, the parent of Hanes, Champion, Maidenform and Playtex, plunged 19% on Wednesday after it told investors that it would end a longtime deal with Target.The company reported that its profit last quarter fell 18% from the same time last year because costs and expenses both grew, adding to the stock selloff.Hanesbrands has partnered with Target, selling the C9 by Champion men's, women's and children's activewear clothing and shoe brand for 15 years. But the company won't renew its contract for the line with Target when it expires in early 2020.Once the deal lapses, Hanesbrands will still sell clothes there. The retailer accounted for 13% of the company's .4 billion in sales last year and was the biggest customer in its activewear business. CARLSBAD (CNS) - A train struck and killed a pedestrian this afternoon at a coastal northern San Diego County rail depot, authorities reported.The fatality at Carlsbad Village Train Station on State Street in Carlsbad occurred about 2:30 p.m., according to sheriff's officials.The victim, whose name, age and gender were not immediately available, died at the scene, Lt. Christopher Collier said.Northbound and southbound Coaster train runs were suspended in the area until further notice due to the death, North County Transit District officials advised.
