CHANGCHUN, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Economic cooperation and investment among northeast Asia countries is accelerating, a senior trade official of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Thursday in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province."Northeast Asia has the advantages of modern technology, abundant natural resources and huge markets, which lays a solid foundation for common prosperity through cooperation," Koo Bon-Tai, vice trade minister of the DPRK, said at the Sixth Northeast Asia Investment and Trade Expo.Northeast Asia plays an important role promoting regional development, prosperity and security, said Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission. He added that the development of the Greater Tumen Initiative (GTI) will become a new growth point for China and northeast Asia."All mining, communication and infrastructure projects approved by the Mongolian government are related to the development of northeast Asia," said Noroviin Altanhuyag, the first deputy prime minister of Mongolia.According to Chen Weigen, Vice Governor of Jilin Province, the sixth Northeast Asia Expo will showcase Changchun, Jilin and the Tumen River and attract domestic and overseas enterprises to join regional development and cooperation in the Tumen River area. The Expo began Thursday in Changchun, which attracted 50,000 businessmen from home and abroad, including those from 110 of the world's top 500 companies.

TIANJIN, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's top climate change official said on Wednesday that the country's greenhouse gas emissions would peak earlier than expected if developed countries complied with international protocols."We will try to get past the peak of emissions as early as possible, but this also hinges on how much money the developed nations will offer and what technology they will transfer, as required by the international protocols," Xie Zhenhua, who is also vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told reporters on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations climate talks in northern China's Tianjin."The more money they provide, or the earlier the money arrives, the sooner we should be able to pass the emissions peak," Xie said.He noted some developed countries, even with a per capita GDP of more than 40,000 U.S. dollars per year, have yet to reach their emissions peak as their greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise."Under such circumstances, how can you ask China, with a per capita GDP just over 3,000 U.S. dollars, to foresee its peak?" he asked. After three rounds of talks this year, which are moving slowly towards a negotiated text for the Cancun meeting, more than 3,000 delegates from 194 nations gathered in Tianjin to speed the search for common ground prior to a major meeting in Mexico's Cancun at the end of the year. However, the gap remains wide between developed and developing nations as rich nations remain wary of green technology transfers and providing additional financing to poorer nations.

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- China's work safety supervisor will soon launch a nationwide inspection campaign on coal mines to crack down on illegal mining and prevent deadly accidents.A spokesman of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) said Sunday the campaign, which starts on Oct. 10 and lasts until Nov. 30, will check whether accident-prone small coal mines of outdated capacity have been shut down according to state policies.Technological upgrades, merger and acquisition of coal mines will also be examined during the campaign, the spokesman said.According to the SAWS, 1,539 small coal mines of outdated capacity have to be closed in China this year to meet the country's carbon dioxide emission and pollution-reduction requirements.China's annual fatalities at coal mines had dropped from a peak of 6,995 deaths in 2002 to 2,631 in 2009, according to data from the SAWS.Six people were killed and 12 were injured in a coal mine gas outburst Sunday in southwest China's Guizhou Province, a spokesman with the provincial work safety bureau said. The accident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. Sunday in Xinglong Coal Mine in Tongzi County, Zunyi City of Guizhou, said the spokesman.Thirty-five people were working in the mine when the accident happened. BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday called on Japan to make substantial efforts to create appropriate conditions for improvement of bilateral ties ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Yokohama. At a routine news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao exchanged greetings with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan prior to the start of the East Asian Summit last Saturday.Hong said China attached great importance to developing ties with Japan.Developing China-Japan strategic and mutually beneficial relations was in the fundamental interests of both nations and their people, Hong said.China stands for resolving the problems between the two countries through dialogue and consultation on the basis of the principles of the four political documents, he said, adding China's position in this regard remained unchanged. The four political documents, namely the China-Japan joint statement on comprehensively advancing strategic and reciprocal relations, the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration, serve as the bedrock for developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries. In reply to a question on the sovereignty of the Diaoyu Islands, Hong reaffirmed that the Diaoyu Islands and its adjacent islets have been an integral part of the Chinese territory since ancient times.China-Japan relations have been strained since a collision between two Japanese Coast Guard patrol ships and a Chinese trawler on Sept. 7 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.The Japanese Coast Guard seized the trawler and detained the fishermen and the captain on Sept. 8.China, which claims sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands, has maintained the seizure and detention were illegal.
