A library book in Maryland is getting national attention after a little girl’s love for the book turned into its own story.Anita Vassallo, the acting director of Montgomery County Public Libraries in Maryland, loves a good story. This month, she read the children’s book The Postman for the very first time, after getting a copy of it in the mail. The person who sent the book: Mora Gregg, who checked the book out from the library back in 1946, when she was just 2 years old. Mora Gregg and her family moved to Canada before she could return it. While cleaning recently, she found the book she’s had all these years.“Probably when I was dusting the books and came across it and was rummaging a bit because it had slipped behind some other books,” Gregg recalls. After finding the neglected piece of her childhood, Gregg decided to return the book to the library 73 years later.“I’m not getting any younger and I didn’t want it to get thrown away or lost or anything to happen,” Gregg says.Gregg mailed the book back to the library with a note inside, joking how she refused to let it go because she loved it so much. The story provided a surprise ending to Vassallo, who also joked about the book’s return.“We don’t charge fines on children’s books, so no matter how old a kid’s book is when it comes back to us, there’s no charge,” Vassallo says. 1356

A 40-year-old Honduran woman who was apprehended early Monday morning near the border in Eagle Pass, Texas, has died in Customs and Border Protection custody, the agency announced.CBP said in a statement later Monday that the woman collapsed about 25 minutes after being apprehended, and that agents "quickly initiated emergency medical care." Emergency medical personnel arrived within 10 minutes and transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. It's at least the third death of an undocumented migrant in three days near the US-Mexico border after being taken into custody by American personnel.Earlier Monday, CBP announced the death of a 33-year-old Salvadoran man who appeared to seize shortly after he was apprehended midday Sunday. CBP is waiting to notify the next of kin before releasing the man's name.On Saturday, Jonathan Alberto "aka Johana" Medina Leon, 25, died at the Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso on Saturday, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency said.Medina Leon, a transgender woman, "requested to be tested for HIV and tested positive" on May 28 and was transferred to the hospital where she later died, according to ICE.CBP said in a statement, "The care of those in CBP's custody is paramount. Throughout the past few decades, laws and regulations protecting the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer population have progressed quite a bit. “Several decades ago, transgender wasn’t a term,” transgender woman and LGBTQ advocate Laura Macwaters said. Macwaters says a lot has changed since the 70s and 80s. “Politicians wouldn’t talk to us,” said Macwaters. “They wouldn’t accept our money. We could be fired and kicked out, harassed and assaulted at will with hardly any protections.” Macwaters says she waited to share her true identity with others until she felt safe out in public. She honestly never thought the day would come. “It is just mind-bogglingly awesome to see all the things I never thought I would live to see. Never thought I’d live this long to begin with, much less live to see such an outwilling of support and love from people and acceptance,” Macwaters said. One organization that monitors the progression of LGBTQ rights and policies across the country is the 1027
