NAIROBI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A visiting Chinese Tibetologist delegation on Wednesday gave Kenyan lawmakers an insight into Tibet and its issues.     Shes-rab-nyi-ma, vice president of China's Central University for Nationalities and head of the Chinese delegation, introduced the basic facts of Tibet, the origin of the "Tibetan issue," the efforts the Chinese government has taken to develop the local economy and to protect the indigenous language and culture, and the system of regional autonomy for ethnic minorities in China.     Legislator Ahmed Shakeel Shabeer said many Kenyan lawmakers didn't know much about Tibet before and most of them had been influenced by western media on the Tibetan issue due to their British-style education. BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Anti-terror forces that safeguarded the safe Beijing Olympics last year are in action again as China has stepped up security ahead of its 60th anniversary of founding on Oct. 1, an official said Friday, one year after the Games.     "A safe National Day is the key to the success of the anniversary," said Wang Anshun, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China Beijing Municipal Committee.     "Beijing will adopt the security model to ensure the absolute safety of the celebrations," he said.     Experts said the forces of safeguarding the anniversary activities should be stronger than during the Games as terrorist groups are also better equipped.     Unlike the Olympic events mostly held in venues, the celebrations including parade inspections and fireworks evening parties, occur outdoors, which make it more difficult to prevent terrorist attacks, said Cai Changjun, professor with the Institute of Special Police of China.     The major threats come from East Turkestan terrorists, Tibetan separatist forces as well as Falun Gong forces, said Li Wei, director of the anti-terrorism research center at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations.     Police did not reveal how many officers would be deployed in the safety campaign.     The Snow Leopard Commando Unit (SLCU), a major anti-terrorism wing of the People's Armed Police, and the Blue Sword Commando Unit (BSCU) under the Beijing armed police, are ready for security operations during the celebrations, said a Beijing armed police official.     The two highly-classified special police squads, with more than 400 officers, were dubbed as the protector of the Olympics for their roles in counter-terrorism, riot control and other special tasks, such as stopping hijacking and bomb disposal.     SLCU and BSCU participated in an anti-terrorism drill in June as the latest national level exercise ahead of the National Day in northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's capital Hohhot, as well as Shanxi and Hebei provinces that surround Beijing.     The exercise, codenamed "Great Wall-6", aimed to improve the police forces' abilities to deal with bombs containing radioactive contaminants, serial terrorist attacks and blasts in chemical factories.     The Beijing police also held an exercise dubbed "Forbidden City" which tested the ability to rescue hostages and handle blasts.     "The anti-terror schemes are well-knit. We've made specific plans for commanding, force deployment and actions during the Beijing Olympics. All these can be used in the National Day celebrations, Cai said.     More exercises are needed to test the emergency response capacity and smooth the coordination among various forces, he said.     Police will strengthen baggage checks in subway stations, an anti-terror measure which started during Games.     Like the system during the Olympics, emergency police centers can mobilize helicopters and satellites to prevent and handle potential terror attacks, Wang said.     The equipment to deal with chemical weapons, monitoring system of suspected vehicles and air detection equipment that were developed during the Olympics have been used in daily checks, he said.     The capital also has mobilized hundreds of thousands of security personnel, Communist Party officials and volunteers patrolling the city to ensure a terrorism-free anniversary.     Fu Xinling, a volunteer who patrolled streets in Wanshou Road Community in Haidian District during the Olympics, is ready to wear the red armband again.     "We will go back to our posts again in a month to provide clues and information to the police," she said. "We will never allow the terrorists to damage our celebrations."     They read handbooks on Olympics security, which is also helpful in the 60th anniversary, said Cai     Lianqi, a police officer in Wanshou Road Community. "The public is the backing of our security work."

URUMQI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The 9th China Xinjiang International Agricultural Fair opened in the northwestern city of Urumqi Wednesday, attracting 110,000 business people from around the world.     Representatives with 987 companies from 15 countries and regions have arrived to attend the three-day event, which features exhibitions of fertilizers, pesticides and seeds, the organizers said in a press release.     It would be the largest fair compared with the previous eight sessions in terms of its visitors and scope, the organizers said.     "The fair is held against the backdrop of global financial crisis and the July 5 riot," the press release said. "The organizers will arrange activities to promote Xinjiang's agricultural products that have not been selling well due to the aftermath of the riot."     The riot in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has left 197 people dead, mostly innocent civilians, and more than 1,600 others injured.     But business people still hope to cash in on the vast market opportunities of Xinjiang, which takes up a sixth of Chinese territory, as Urumqi is gradually recovering from the violence.     "Our company entered the Xinjiang market in 2005 selling fertilizers and has won a wide recognition of local farmers," said Gu Rongbao, manager of the Jinlaifu Chemicals Import and Export Co. HANGZHOU, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said Saturday his country welcomes Chinese investors.     Zardari made the call during his visit to Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, the first leg of his ongoing China tour. BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China will cut gasoline and diesel prices from Wednesday by 220 yuan (32.4 U.S. dollars) per ton, or by about 3 percent each, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced Tuesday.     The retail price of gasoline will drop by about 0.16 yuan per liter, and that of diesel by about 0.19 yuan per liter, the commission said in a statement issued after a news briefing. A staff member works at a gas station in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, July 28, 2009The benchmark prices of gasoline would be reduced to 6,910 yuan per tonne, and that of diesel to 6,170 yuan per ton. The price cut was in response to recent falls in global crude prices, which had dropped to 63.97 U.S. dollars per barrel from 67.8 U.S. dollars on June 30, according to the statement.     Global crude prices, despite recent rebounds, experienced consecutive falls in the first half of this month, said the statement.     The NDRC is basing its adjustment of domestic fuel prices on three kinds of global crude prices, but the commission did not reveal the structure of the three prices.     On Monday, light, sweet crude for September delivery rose 33 cents to settle at 68.38 U.S. dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. London Brent for September delivery rose 50 cents to 70.82 dollars a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.     It is the sixth fuel price adjustment since the country adopted a new fuel pricing mechanism, which took effect on Jan. 1.     The Chinese government has lowered retail fuel prices in December, before the new mechanism became effective, and again in January. It also raised prices once in March and twice last month.     Under the pricing mechanism, the NDRC would consider changing benchmark retail prices of oil products when the international crude price rises or falls by a daily average of 4 percent over 20 days.     The two price rises last month were slight, said the statement, in an effort to quell doubts over frequent price hikes.     The country's latest fuel price hike on Jan. 30 sparked widespread debate as consumers grumbled that the record domestic prices were even higher than in the United States.     However, according to the NDRC statement, post-rise prices on June 30 translated into about 60 U.S. dollars per barrel, which was 7.8 U.S. dollars lower than the international price that day.     On June 1, post-rise prices were equal to about 50 U.S. dollars a barrel, 7.6 U.S. dollars lower than the global crude price.     The NDRC raised pump prices of gasoline and diesel by 400 yuan per ton, or 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively, from June 1, and again by 600 yuan per tonne, or 9 and 10 percent, respectively, from June 30.     Such controlled rises were meant to ease the burden of downstream industries so as to help fuel a recovery in the economy, and also to cushion the negative effect of irrational rises in global crude prices, such as raises in investment of speculative capital, according to the statement.     The commission would continue to adjust domestic fuel prices "at an appropriate time", and take into account of changes in global crude prices, domestic economic situation, and demand and supply on the domestic market, said the statement.
