SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld San Diego’s Skyride reopened Wednesday after a ‘”gust of significant wind” caused the ride to close in mid-February. According to SeaWorld, the park, along with the ride’s manufacturer and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health inspected various parts of the ride over the last several months, including the towers, gondolas, ride cables and various other equipment. SeaWorld says the ride’s communication cable was also replaced. RELATED: 'Gust of significant wind' causes SeaWorld ride to stop, leaves 16 strandedOn February 18, high winds caused the ride to shut down, trapping 16 people high above Mission Bay.Rescue efforts lasted roughly from 7:30 p.m. until midnight. “We’re very excited to reopen the Skyride, but before doing so, we were going to ensure it was back to working perfectly,” said Marilyn Hannes, SeaWorld San Diego park president. “Skyride has been a guest favorite for more than 50 years, and I’m thrilled that we can once again open this ride, which for many visitors is a very nostalgic experience. I was just a kid when I first rode Skyride, and I’m happy that I can ride it now with my grandchildren.”The ride first opened in San Diego in 1967. 1229

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. Students argued that the rest and recovery days are not enough to give them a mental break from school, many arguing that it was best to have the longer, 9-day break instead.Read the full email from SDSU official below: 1151

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State Students created public service announcements, as part of a competition, to encourage their peers to take precautions and stop the spread of the coronavirus. Thursday the university announced two more students tested positive for the virus, making the total four since move in.The County of San Diego and SDSU will use the PSAs online as part of a new ad campaign, according to the county. The university came to the county amid a spike in cases among young people age 20-29. San Diego County reported 25% of positive cases belong to that age group."We're asking people of your generation of your age group to do the right thing," Dr. Hala Madanat, Director of the School of Public Health at SDSU, said. She led the charge to create the competition."I really was hoping that we would hear from the age group where we were struggling to get adherence to the guidelines and be the ones to encourage their peers," to follow the guidelines she said. One of the three winners, Senior JakeBryan Bonifacio, said he felt an obligation to use his skills to help. "It [the pandemic] is very concerning so that’s why I felt compelled to share this opportunity, share my video."Bonifacio is a Marketing major and already had the tools to create a video. He said he used his own camera and editing software. He said it was most important to create an impact using levity and positivity. He used his pup to demonstrate social distancing, "He’s the star of the show... animals bring that lovability."While he is optimistic, he hopes to be a leader for change, to protect his peers and those more vulnerable, like his grandmothers. The winners were announced August 10th and received Apple AirPods, according to Bonifacio.SDSU has 29 confirmed coronavirus cases since March, encompassing students, staff and visitors. 1840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University has instituted new protocols to keep the coronavirus from spreading on campus.Dr. Luke Wood, Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity, said they hired security to patrol the campus from Thursday through Sunday after hours, document policy violations, and send reports to staff who handle disciplinary action."There are real consequences now of our COVID-19 policies, and that can range from a warning, to suspension to even in extreme cases, expulsion," Wood said.He said they also have a wellness ambassador program they hope to expand to 50 personnel, "so that when students come on campus physically they are being greeted and welcomed to the campus. They're reminded of our policies around wearing face-masks, around social distancing."Wood said he wants to make sure SDSU doesn't join the growing list of colleges with outbreaks."We're doing everything that's within our power to make sure that we don't follow in others' footsteps," he said. "It's demonstrating we take this very seriously."Only a third of students (about 2,600) are living on campus this year, according to Wood. In-person classes have been cut from thousands to 202. The rest of the classes are held online.Caryl Montero-Adams, Director of Student Life and Leadership, says the policies highlight the very real threat the virus still poses on and off campus."There are other real consequences to COVID-19 in and of itself, and we want to ensure that we're focused again on the health and safety of our campus community and that our students are aware of where they fit in with that," said Montero-Adams. 1646

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Small businesses that take the government up on its low-interest loan proposal may not end up paying any of the money back under certain circumstances. As part of the Coronavirus economic stimulus bill in Congress, the Federal Government would make available upwards of 0 billion in low-interest loans of 2.75 to 3.75 percent for many businesses under 500 workers. The loans would help employers who are suffering amid the economic shutdown stay afloat in the short term. Additionally, for businesses that maintain payroll or meet certain hiring requirements, the government may forgive the loan entirely. "This could be a vital safety net for many of these companies that might close, and for their employees who might not have any other source of income during this painful period," said Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University. Small businesses and workers in San Diego have been hit hard amid the outbreak. The San Diego Workforce Partnership estimates 350,000 employees could be laid off, many from service sector jobs that don't have the option to work at home. Those jobs are largely in retail, accomodation, and restaurants. At The French Gourmet in Pacific Beach, owner Michel Malecot says sales are down 90 percent and that the restaurant and its catering business have lost 0,000. He has put in 0,000 of savings to keep the lights on and pay his suppliers. "It's like being a zombie," Malecot says. "You are in the tomb and nothing is really happening yet. Your instinct takes over and you have to try to make it."Malecot says he is initially optimistic about the loan program. He says many of his regular 80 employees are on unemployment, but that he is doing all he can to be able to hit the ground running once business picks up. 1803
