Political leaders on both sides of the aisle are stressing the importance of wearing masks.That now includes Republicans like Vice President Mike Pence and the governor of Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson.On the Democratic side, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says a federal mandate on face coverings is long overdue.Rodica Damian, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Houston, tells us seeing prominent political figures accept masks will influence individual decisions.Damian says there's two main sources of what drives behavior, personality and social context. Identifying with a certain political group adds social context.“A lot of people who don't wear masks think they're not wearing masks because they're kind of independent thinking, but it's very likely they're also following social norms,” said Damian. “They're just following social norms of a group that thinks you shouldn't wear masks.”When it comes to personality, Damian says people who are more responsible, rule-following, and pro-social tend to wear masks. Those who don't may have higher levels of narcissism or be more impulsive.“We're all on a continuum, so I don't want to put people in categories, so depending on where you fall on that continuum on each of these traits, they're all going to feed into your decision,” said Damian.Damian says we should remember that across the country and across party lines, the majority of people are strongly in favor of wearing masks. 1465

POWAY, Calif. (KGTV) — A 27-acre parcel in Black Mountain Ranch once planned to be the site of a new middle school could instead turn into a Costco development.The Poway Unified School District board voted 4-0 on Thursday to pursue a long-term lease with Costco to transform the site into a mixed-use retail, restaurant, and housing complex, plus a warehouse. The district has twice declared the property at the northeast corner of Camino del Sur and Carmel Valley Road as surplus: first in 2012, and then reaffirmed in 2019. "This site has an extremely lucrative opportunity for the district and I, for one, don't see how we can turn this down," said board president Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff. "Let Costco go figure out what the community will accept."The move, however, is being met with concern from parents in the district. Chasmine Grismer, a district parent who has lived near the Black Mountain Ranch site for a decade, expressed concern over traffic, the environment, wildfire evacuation, and demand on schools. "By bringing in an apartment complex, you're going to be bringing in families, families with children, who again will need space in schools. Our schools are already impacted," she said. (KGTV) — Poway officials unanimously approved the use of outdoor space for fitness classes and religious services, after the state banned indoor activities at gyms and placed of worship this week.Wednesday, Poway City Council leaders voted to allow Poway park space to be reserved for fitness- or religious-related activities as part of the city's Sharing Outdoor Spaces, or "SOS," initiative. Gavin Newsom ordered all indoor activities to close at fitness centers, worship services, offices for non-critical sections, personal care services, hair salons and barber shops, and malls across the state amid rising coronavirus cases."In Poway we often think outside the box, this time we’re thinking outside the walls," said Mayor Vaus. "Last week we offered restaurants a lifeline through the simple act of loaning picnic tables and the outpouring of support in Poway was overwhelming. Given the current mandates, we need to look for creative and safe ways to help keep more ‘doors’ open in Poway. "We're not forcing people to do anything.
