SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the City of San Diego, barring them from removing pepper trees in Kensington.The trees are more than 100 years old, planted when the neighborhood was first marketed as a housing development in the early 1910s. While the neighborhood was once filled with them, resident Maggie McCann estimates there are only about 33 left.“I think they are pretty looking,” said McCann. “They’re part of the fabric of the neighborhood.”McCann was one of the residents who filed the TRO against the city. She said she has been working for more than a year to designate the remaining pepper trees as “Heritage Trees” and “Parkway Resource Trees” under the City’s Conserve-a-Tree program.When she heard a pepper tree on the 4500 block of Edgeware Road had been cut down on Monday, she rushed to process the TRO.“We don’t know why these trees are being cut down,” said McCann.McCann suggested it may be related to a plan to bury SDGE utility lines in the neighborhood, but the City of San Diego denies that claim.In a statement to 10News, a city spokesperson said the tree that was cut down Monday had been “evaluated more than a year ago as part of a project to repair a damaged and uneven sidewalk caused by the tree’s growth. Noticeable decay and deteriorating tree structure were also observed during the evaluation and the adjacent property owner was notified at that time.”On Tuesday, the remnants of the trunk remained on Edgeware Rd. Decay could be seen in the interior part of the tree, though much of the large trunk appeared to be healthy.“The tree really didn’t need to be removed,” argued McCann.But the city said their decision was more about damage to the sidewalk than whether the tree could have survived a few more decades.“In this instance, the imperative to make the sidewalk safer for residents was weighed against the city’s desire to preserve neighborhood trees and continue to grow our urban canopy. Due to the tree’s damaging impact to the adjacent sidewalk and its decaying state, the decision was made to remove it in order to preserve public safety,” wrote the city spokesperson.A resident on the block said the sidewalk had been recently replaced. The new pavement had been cut around the tree and was undamaged.Several other pepper trees in Kensington have been marked for removal. On Tuesday, McCann walked the streets, posting copies of the TRO on the trees.The fate of those trees remains unknown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Rancho Bernardo hotel hit hard by the loss of midweek conventions is taking new steps to fill vacant rooms."We were doing pretty good and then Labor Day came and we fell off a cliff again," said Jeff Livingston, who directs sales at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Livingston says the number of employees has gone from the hundreds into the dozens, as the business conventions the inn depends on have all but dried up. Now, the Rancho Bernardo Inn deems success at 35% occupancy, a number that a year earlier was upwards of 90%. "During the week we're literally sometimes in single digits," Livingston said. "There are times where there are more staff than there are guests." The Rancho Bernardo Inn has plenty of company. San Diego's tourism industry has lost 52,000 jobs in the last year, a nearly 26% drop, according to data released Friday by the Employment Development Department. The region's unemployment rate was 9% in September, with jobs down 117,000 over the year. Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Point Loma Nazarene University, said hotels are seeing a few more visitors because of road trips, but that business will be limited until a vaccine arrives.Meanwhile, the Rancho Bernardo Inn has dropped its rates on Sunday nights through Thursday, in some instances offering two nights for the price of one. But that's not all it's doing. Livingston said he and other workers are knocking on doors, visiting businesses, and doing all they can to spread the word about the discounts. Additionally, the hotel converted one of its meeting rooms to a kids game room. It has also arranged for a bird trainer on weekends that brings an owl and a falcon, which eat rabbit meat off of a guest's gloved hand for . "No stone goes unturned and there really isn't a bad idea right now," Livingston said.Livingston said beekeeping could be next. He said if the occupancy rate can get to at least 40% and stay that way, more jobs could come back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Hillcrest man is still recovering in the hospital after he says he was attacked, leaving him with a head injury and partial paralysis.Ricky Jackle says he was walking with a friend on Robinson Avenue in Hillcrest October 14.“I was out with a friend of mine. Had a few drinks at The Rail.” According to Jackle, that’s when the assault took place.“Last thing I remember, there was a confrontation between the person I was with and somebody else. I tried to get in the middle of it to stop in. I was pushed on my chest, went backwards and hit my head on the curb. Apparently that’s when I bled out. I heard voices, by friend’s voice behind me,” said Jackle.Jackle says after the incident, his friend fled the scene.In tears, Jackle describes how the assault has changed his life. “I can’t work, I can’t do the things I used to do. I’m scared.”“I don’t think anyone should be attacked or a victim like I was, I don’t think it’s right.”While under observation at the hospital, Jackle began to feel numbness in his hands and arms which resulted in loss of movement in his hands, arms and legs, according to a GoFundMe post.“The injury caused swelling which compressed his spinal cord resulting in loss of movment [sic] and some paralysis,” according to the post.Jackle’s cousin, Derrick Roach spoke about the friend who left Jackle following the attack. “He said the reason I left Ricky is with all the blood I thought he was dead. San Diego’s median income can afford renters 552 square feet, according to a new report by Rent Café. The City of San Diego says the median income for a family of four is ,400.
