It’s official, summer 2020 was the hottest on record in the Northern Hemisphere. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released their monthly report on global temperatures. August 2020’s temperatures around the world made it the second-warmest August on record behind 2016, and the third-hottest season. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, August set a new record with a temperature departure from average of 2.14 degrees F, beating 2016’s numbers.“The most notable temperature departures from average were observed across Alaska, eastern Canada, the western contiguous U.S., Europe, northern Russia, central South America, Western Australia, eastern Antarctica, and across the North Pacific, the Bering Sea, and the Barents Sea, where temperatures were at least 2.0°C (3.6°F) above average,” NOAA scientists observed. The three-month season, June-August, surpassed the previous global record reached in both 2016 and 2019. This period is winter in the Southern Hemisphere, and they also had warmer weather than normal. Australia also had a drier than usual winter, 31 percent below average for precipitation.Globally, the ten hottest Augusts have all happened since 1998, and the five warmest have happened since 2015.Scientists believe 2020 will very likely rank in the top five warmest years on record. Also noted in the report, arctic sea ice continues to decline. The average Arctic sea ice coverage in August was the third smallest on record, about 29 percent below the 1981-2010 average. 1509

Interim Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson will be tasked with regaining the fractured trust of Aurora, Colorado residents after she was appointed the city's permanent chief of police during a city council meeting Monday night."I am honored, humbled, and energized by the trust the city manager, mayor, and council has placed in me. Aurora is a city that has experienced many triumphs and tragedies, and we sit at a crossroads for our city's future," Wilson said in a prepared statement moments after the vote. "I am committed to leading the Aurora Police Department to be an active and engaged part of this community in building a collaborative and constructive path forward. We will be a transparent partner dedicated to making Aurora a safer city for all, with respect for our diversity, and embrace of unity, and continual conversation about how we can do better."“I believe that she is the right choice to lead the Aurora Police Department,” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman tweeted Tuesday. “She has a lot of work to do to improve the image of this department and to rebuild trust between our officers and the community.”Wilson's appointment comes at a time when the embattled police department is under the spotlight for a series of controversies over the past year, most notably the violent arrest of Elijah McClain, who would die days later after encountering police the night of Aug. 24.The announcement came a few hours after it was revealed Aurora officers detained a Black family after mistaking their SUV for a stolen motorcycle from another state Sunday, the latest in a string of tarnishing encounters with residents in the community.Coffman said in an interview Tuesday that he believes Wilson is right for the job.“She is not afraid to make the tough decisions, and I believe that she is a person that can move this department forward,” the mayor said. “IT has had a lot of problems: Poor image, bad relationships with the community. So it is really going to take a tremendous effort and a lot of work to move the department forward, and I think she can do that.”Omar Montgomery, the president of the NAACP’s Aurora chapter, says he thinks that the recent incidents involving APD show that the department needs to take a serious look at the culture within the department and how it handles situations like the one on Sunday or the Elijah McClain incident.“We need something different because it seems like every other day there is something we are addressing related to the police department,” Montgomery said. “…If we can get rid of those officers and keep the ones that are doing a phenomenal job I think we will be on the right path to getting a police department that we, all combined, can trust.”Wilson was selected after a months-long nationwide search to replace Chief Nick Metz, who retired from the force Jan. 1.Wilson will continue to lead a department under scrutiny as communities around the nation reexamine the role and operations of police departments in the wake of George Floyd’s death.Marcus Dudley Jr., a commander with Aurora Police Department; Alexander D. Jones, a colonel and bureau chief for the Baltimore County Police Department; and Avery L. Moore, an assistant police chief with the Dallas Police Department, were the other three candidates vying for the position.Aurora City Council also on Monday unanimously passed a resolution banning Aurora police from using carotid holds, which was used on McClain the night of his violent arrest. The use of carotid holds had already been changed under department policy, but will now go before a final vote during the next city council meeting.KMGH's óscar Contreras was first to report this story. 3683

Instead of planes, trains, automobiles, and hotels, more and more travelers are considering renting an RV for upcoming trips. After all, there is virtually no risk of contracting COVID-19 when you are sleeping and eating in your own home on wheels. But while it appears a great way to travel, you need to know the pros and cons before you rent a camper (that you pull) or motor home (that you drive). It's the vacation rage of 2020, according to Money magazine, which calls RV's "virus friendly," since you drive across the country with your own bedroom and kitchen. But Money says many people end up surprised at the total cost, which can total a lot more than you first think.Know the real costRV rental can range from 0 to 0 per night, similar to a hotel room.Campsites are another to as much as 0 a night, depending on location and amenities.Gas can cost to 0 per day, even with today's low gas prices, as most motor homes get just 5 to 10 miles per gallon.Your auto insurance may not cover the full value of that RV, and your credit card may not cover it at all. That means you may have to pay or more per day for RV insurance.Add it up and you can end up spending 0 - 0 per night, though it is still cheaper than a 0 a night luxury resort. One other downside: many rental RV's are budget models, without all the high-end amenities you see at RV shows. Tour the model first, before you rent.Pull-behind camper or motor home?Campers that you pull tend to rent for less than models you drive. But think twice about a pull-behind camper if you have never towed a vehicle before. You will need an SUV or pickup built for towing, with a tow package that includes brake light hookups. And if you have never towed anything, you could be in for a surprise when you try to back up.A small or mid-size motor home that you drive is usually best for first-timers, experts say.And you have your own COVID-free accommodations, which can be well worth the cost.Bottom line: Campers are a great way to travel safely during the pandemic. Interested? Check a major rental firm like Cruise America. Or rent directly from owners at RV Share.Just know all the costs involved, so you don't waste your money.___________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. INDIANAPOLIS -- A man's quick reaction spared him from serious injury or even death after a chunk of concrete was thrown from an overpass on I-465 and shattered his windshield.Alan Cox was driving his Honda SUV on I-465 northbound Wednesday afternoon. He said he saw three men on the overpass as he approached the Pendleton Pike exit. Cox said he could tell they were up to no good, especially when he noticed one throwing something into moving traffic and in his direction."I knew he was going to throw something so I veered to the left a little. He nailed me. If I veered over to the left -- dead center to the chest," Cox said.A chunk of concrete hit Cox's windshield on passenger side and left the interior of his SUV covered in glass"People get killed. I'm fortunate to be here. This can be fixed," Cox said.If something like this should happen to you, police ask that you safely pull over to the side of the road, immediately call them and provide the mile marker.  If you have a description of the suspect(s), provide that as well.  1102

Issues of race relations has become a major campaign issue in this year’s presidential election, with the issue getting pushed to the forefront following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.During Thursday’s presidential debate, President Donald Trump declared himself the “least racist person in this room” after he decried the Black Lives Matter movement.“The first time I ever heard of Black Lives Matter, they were chanting ‘pigs in a blanket,’ talking about police,” Trump said. “‘Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon.’ I said that is a horrible thing. And they were marching down the street. And that was my first glimpse of the black lives matter. I thought it was a terrible thing.“As far as my relationships with all people, I think I have great relationships with all people. I am the least racist person in this room.”Both Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden had a spirited exchange about Biden’s record on race relations. Trump confronted Biden for his support of the Crime Bill in the 1990s while a US Senator.“I said not since Abraham Lincoln has anybody done what I've done for the Black community,” Trump said. “You have done nothing other than the crime bill which put tens of thousands of black men, mostly, in jail.”While there are sections of the bill Biden continues to back, including an assault weapons ban and the Violence Against Women Act, Biden has shied away from backing mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes.“It was a mistake,” Biden said. “I've been trying to change particularly the portion on cocaine. That is why I've been arguing that we should not send anyone to jail for a pure drug offense. They should be going into treatment.”During the discussion on race, Biden attempted to make a personal appeal to Black voters.“I never had to tell my daughter, if she's pulled over, make sure she puts both hands on top of the wheel and don't reach for the glove box, because someone may shoot you,” Biden said. “But a Black parent, no matter how wealthy or how poor they are, has to teach their child, when you are walking down the street, don't have a hood on, make sure that if you get pulled over, yes sir, no sir, hands on top of the wheel, because you are the victim whether you are a person making 0,000 a year or someone who is on food stamps. The fact of the matter is, there is institutional racism in America.”While Trump has previously said that he does not believe there is institutional racism in America, he said that no one has done more for Black Americans in recent history.“Nobody has done more for the Black community than Donald Trump,” he said. “If you look, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, possible exception, nobody has done what I've done. Criminal justice reform, Obama and Joe didn't do it. I don't even think they tried. They might have wanted to do it, but if you had to see the arms I had to twist to get that done, it was not a pretty picture, and everybody knows it, including some very liberal people that cried in my office -- two weeks later they are out saying, we have to defeat him.” 3120
